It is a dumb place for it. True story: I had the IAT in my MAF sensor fail causing the computer to over fuel the engine. There were no codes or lights and I caught on slowly because of a loss of power and poor idle. My left cylinder bank was seriously dumping fuel and had cooked the converter. How did I find this? The engine smelled like very hot engine oil so I stuck my head under the truck to see what was going on. The #1 converter on the left bank was glowing iridescent orange. Almost immediately, some oil that had escaped from the rear main seal that had pooled in the converter heat shield made a very audible "woof" sound and caught on fire. I put the fire out with the garage extinguisher and laid next to the truck for about 16 minutes before I felt felt it was safe to take my eyes off it.Common oil leaks are
valve covers
Dipstick
Rear main seal (thanks to the converter being right there!)
If your going after the
Front main / crank seal that one can be done in the truck but it’s better to bite the bullet and do a full re seal of the timing cover and waterpump
