MrQ's Red Flyer

No, not really. Its not actually meant to scan for signals; its mostly a point A to point B setup.

I got the parking brake lines, the new brake shoes and the brake hardware so I am going to dig into the drums today and get them knocked out. I am just glad I have this thing on stands in the garage.

I know how hot it must be for you. Every day last week the temperature peaked past 100. It was even 110 one day last week. It is still very hot this week up here. But at least it's dry where I am.

I was sitting still in busy stop and go traffic on the highway in the the hottest part of the day last week and my engine temp peaked 220 degrees, my intake air temperature was 295 degrees! That has really motivated me to get my electric fan back in now! lol

The humidity is the killer. I know my engine temp has spiked, but fortunately not redlined.

btw, I'm curious as to where you set up your CB antenna? Where and how did you attach it?

Its a little one and a half foot magnetic base antenna. Right now I have it sitting next to my radio antenna. I know, not the best place, but I can't stand having that thing on my roof. Call me stupid, but that's why I removed the roof racks. I'll probably do the tail light/antenna mod later on to get it off of there.

I'm pulling out the old axle right now. Geez it's hot.

Or... if you don't work tomorrow, just go take a long nap and wake up around 10pm or so. Then just work through the night to beat the heat. That's what I just did, had to replace a brake booster and master cylinder on the heep. Took me about 7 hours.

Otherwise, the only sane place in this heat right now is in the library. Weatherunderground says its approximately 101 degrees fahrenheit outside at 6:50pm. My food thermometer sitting on my desk is giving me a read out of 72.8 degrees in the library right now.

I now have a motivation to study for my finals:D

Stay hydrated!

Well the 3.08 is out...piece o' crap. I have the 3.73 under the truck now, I just need to button it up tomorrow or Monday. I hope I see a big change in power for all this work...

But, anyway, yeah it is easy to get dehydrated. I'm pretty sure my shirt will stand on its own tomorrow. :D

Well the new axle is in. Took me a while and a little finagling, but it's in. It really helps when you drop the leaf springs. Made moving that axle out a whole lot easier. I didn;t even take the tires off, just used the engine jack hooked to my trailer hitch and lifted the rear end high enough to clear the tires.

It started raining right as was working on the parking brake lines, so I hid under the truck and kept futzing with it. Unfortunately the rain turned into a down pour and whatever dignity I had was lost as I became instantly flooded. So, I didn't get the line in. I hope to do that tomorrow and I still gotta bleed the brakes too.

Sounds like you almost got it done.
Good idea about the engine hoist

I was in Tyler TX for a short time last summer, talk about hot.
I don't think it went below 105 the entire week.

Found a large pool of oil under the diff today. Guess what I got to do?

In the process of replacing the gasket, I found the diff cover to be very light and when I knocked on it didn't sound like metal. After I cleaned all the gunk off, I found that this 8.8 had been installed with a fiberglass cover!! Not to mention whoever did the job screwed up royally with the rtv and there was no gasket to be seen. *sigh* Off to my new part-out 8.8 for its steel diff cover. Fortunately, I redid the oil in it a year ago and the gasket was almost brand new, so I reused it. I did head to AZ first, but they only had one 8.8 gasket and they wanted 14.99 for it. No freakin' way!

I also tried to bleed the brakes, but the stupid passenger side bleeder wouldn't come off and I rounded off the nut. After a few shots of PB and a couple of knocks with a hammer it finally came off with some locking pliers. Unfortunately it was too late to bleed them at this point, so I guess tomorrow is D-Day.

Here is to not screwing up! :chug:

I feel you on the fiberglass cover, mine had one. However, consider yourself lucky you found it now, instead of breaking it like I did. Sounds like your truck is coming together nicely.

Thanks, man. It's a lot of work and I hope its worth it. BTW, can you get me a linkage off of a manual t-case? It looks like this:

I have had no luck down here

maybe, if nothing else I could make you one.

That would be a HUGE help. Ford wants $41 for that little part!!

I just need that, a front drive shaft u-joint and the front drive shaft to transfer case bolts and we will have a new 4 wheeler on the forum. :D

Guess, I'm off to bang on a few u-joints. Gonna try and get that driveshaft in today. Had a heck of a time finding transfer case to driveshaft bolts that would fit. Had to go with SAE instead of metric.

FFR, (For Future Reference) the bolts are 5/16x24.

Are you sure you want to do that? SAE & Metric are two different thread pitches. It might feel tight at first, but after you crank on em a bit, I would think they would strip. Your going to be re-threading the yolk to make them bolts fit I believe. I just don't know about this, seems like it wouldn't work.

Gman, I wanted metric and I searched for metric, but the finest thread size I found was the M8x1.0 and it didn't thread anywhere near as well as the 5/16x24.

I just finished putting the drive shaft in and other than some busted knuckles everything went okay, bolt-wise. The drive shaft was a different matter all together. It is supposed to be compressed to remove and extended to install. Mine seemed to be cemented in its compressed form. I didn't think about that till the front of the driveshaft was attached. So I got out my winch strap, hooked it into the double carden joint and to the frame and started winching. I finally got it far enough out I could use the bolts to pull it the rest of the way. What a PITA!!

And yes, I did use grade 8. That thing isn't coming apart any time soon.
