Not another V8 swap thread (N2Ford)

I dont quite understand the logic of this setup. Theres no return to bleed off pressure, and the regulator is not upstream of the injectors (5 before, 3 after). The only thing I can see is that the pressure of the 3 after the regulator is regulated, but in turn reducing the pressure to those 3 injectors would relieve upstream pressure...

SVT

It sounds like the tank relief valve is doing the real work, and the vacuum line may be adjusting the pressure a little. I hadn't looked at the spare fuel rail I have in ages, are some injectors really down stream from the regulator?

The old style made more sense, because the regulator could control the pressure to all of them by relieving the extra pressure.

During the conversation with the Ford master tech (my dad), I pulled out the fuel rail. Fuel comes in, supplies the left bank firectly, the rails have a crossover feed line supplying the right side, number 4 injector is fed directly, then the regulator, then the rest of the injectors. The fuel line doesnt have an in/out like the return rails, the returnless rail regulator is tee'd on the rail...

That's a good description. I noticed the vacuum line the other day and wondered why it was there if the "sensor" didn't do anything.

I'm glad that you have a good source of information, and it's you dad. I've had a friendship with an old tech at my favorite Ford dealer. He began with GM, and was the shop foreman when he started at my Ford dealership. He knew a ton about most things, and when his position was eliminated, he became a tech again, with everyone still asking him how to do things. I was sorry to see him retire last year, he was a good friend. Regards,

I was waiting to see if you could get that thing in there with the t-case installed. I thought I was a stud getting it in there with just the trans installed. hahaha... Looks like good progress! Hope the arm is feeling better.

Got some work done yesterday. The muffler support system is mounted differently between the two factory mufflers...

IMAG1477.jpg

With the output diameter the same size of both mufflers, I just cut off the tailpipe of the sport Trac muffler and welded it to the V8 explorer. The exhaust will need to be lengthened after the cats and before the muffler as the Trac has a longer wheelbase than the explorer...

IMAG1478.jpg

I pulled the tcase off, lifted the engine and trans to drain the ATF, then with little effort slid the motor, trans, and trans cooling lines into place. The driver side exhaust was placed into.position prior to the drivetrain install. Here the motor is sitting on the mounts...

IMAG1479.jpg

I ran outa time. Hope to get the tcase and the trans crossmember later today, I wont have a lot of time in my schedule, but I should be able to get it mounted...

That's exciting to see! Don't spend much effort on the muffler, it will get changed soon after I get it back. Weather seems to be good for a little while.

Didn't get a chance today. Tomorrow morning & afternoon I'm busy, but I hope to get more done late afternoon/evening. We got some bad weather coming for a few days starting Sunday evening. Also have long days next week, hopefully I can squeeze some time in on this...

Had an unexpected early day at work, so I got a few minutes in on the trac. Got the tcase in, electrical plug hooked up & vent tube. Got passenger side exhaust loosely connected, went to get the driver side on and had some troubles, found out the front axle has a dampener that is not on my trac, or the V8 explorers, so I gotta pull it off. Funny thing is, is I thought of removing it when I had to drop the axle for the motor mounts when I had the room. Ran out of light pretty quickly, sorry, no pics. Hope to get more done within the next week or so. Should have a day off coming up...

SVT

It's a pain to get to that axle when everything is in. :( I was pretty frustrated when I had to get to it after dropping the engine in. Good luck! I would love to see pics of the tcase fit too.

I'll be posting pics once the trans crossmember is in and everything is mounted. From the trans crossmember forward the sport Trac and explorer are identical, others have done the 4406 swap on their V8 explorers, this, fitment wise, will be the same.
I'll be doing a 1356 swap in mine, out of a bronco. I will have to move the trans mount over to the passenger side slightly, but I have made clearances on my 1356, so I'm going to check fitment first as I may not have to move/modify the crossmember...

Finally got some time to work on this thing again. Took me half the day getting the front exhaust in, had to take the axle dampener out, which was fun with the motor in.
Found out the 96-98 driver side front oxygen sensor harness plug is different from the 99-01 sensor plug...

IMAG1498.jpg

Here is the motor, trans, and tcase in place and bolted in. Plenty of clearance...

After getting the exhaust in, I started looking at the driveshafts. Spent about an hour or so trying to match one up, but in the end, it just didn't happen, so I'm gonna have to build one. After that, I went to install the trans dipstick tube, ended up having to disconnect the trans cooling lines to get it in. Then got the HVAC box in, the overflow/washer fluid tank in, the intake, the fan, fan shroud, and rad in. This is with just the intake sitting on the motor...

IMAG1500.jpg

I was gonna stop here, but decided to do a little more. The exhaust, dipstick tube, HVAC, overflow/washer fluid tank and the upper intake all gave me problems, so I didnt get as much done as I thought, but still got progress. Hope to get more done tomorrow, weather permitting...

Looks good, can't wait to hear it run. Great work. Questions is the 98 transmission harness the same as the 99? There were some differences in the transmission harness from 98 to 99 wasn't there?

Very good, tough work but I'm sure it was still fun to think of the results/goal.

BTW, the picture(looks great) reminds me of the labels on the radiator support. Does anyone look at those? I remember when I rebuilt my 99, and had to repaint the whole body(in/out/under). I saw the french wording there, and I removed it. I do not speak french, and there's no chance anyone who does will ever need to see or read under the hood of my cars.

I cut the French sections out, and moved the right two English blocks down and over. It looks much better without the foreign crap on it. I peeled the French stickers off of my new lawn mower last year. Forgive my ranting, I don't understand why manufacturers here all think that French is going to take over anything.

If you swap those from the V8 truck to the Sport Trac, please leave off the French. It was not hard to peel all of the stickers off, though I lost a couple of bits, a corner. I painted the whole engine bay and put them back on later.

The 98 and 99 harnesses that I have are the same. There was a change, and it happened either early in 98 or at 98. I havent had enough 98 harnesses through my hands to verify this. The difference is the trans harness in most 98's no longer has the vss, and ford added an oss (output speed sensor), which is used to calculate/detect trans slippage...

Don, I still have the explorer V8 core support with both the belt routing and the emissions tags, which I had plans of also swapping into place, but that was going to be a secret/bonus to see if anyone would catch on. I'd like to get a tag from an 01 so the emissions date will match the year of the truck, but I don't have one..

I've seen the transmission harness pinouts for a 97,99,00, but never saw one for a 98, so I wasn't sure of the differences, but I knew there were quite a few wiring differences between the 97 and 99 from the pinouts.

I'm sure you will get it done right. My 99 was a work truck so it didn't need to be perfect. I wonder if any of those kind of labels can be bought new still.

FYI, for those trans harnesses, the change also included a different internal trans harness, with a color change. If you look at the connector on the trans, I think you can tell if it's a white or black plastic. The black trans connector is the newer style, I think it's from 98 to present 4R's.

I will check with my local Ford dealer to see if they can still get the stickers for the radiator support.

Man...I forgot about the trans tube! I ended up having to get one out of the bone yard as mine was slightly mangled. What a PITA that was to get lined up and in when everything was together! :) Glad you are making progress.
