i want to build a full outer outer skelton on my x. what should i use for yube in size.

I guess you have go take into consideration on how close the tubes are to each other and how gusseted they are. But think 1 and 1/2" or 1 and 3/4' DOM tubing would be a good start'

yup and an exco cage requires about twice as much and still wont be 3/4 as strong as a good simple internal cage, not to mention all that added weight and the size of the truck gets bigger too.

Yup I do.

Also most new mega towers are concrete construction thanks to steel prices and the advancements in concrete tech/strength. Still lots of steel rebar and girders though.

You aint seen nothing in China either, look at whats going up in UAE, Dubai......will DWARF Petronas towers, which currently hold all 3 records for worlds tallest. Burj, Dubai, look it up. ONe of my projects.

takes too much steel, adds to much weight, will never be as strong, you cannot take direct shots to the frame you have to go around the body, you MUST tie it into the body because otherwise the body will felx inside the cage, if you do damage a body panel, how are you going to replace it? It makes the truck too damn big to fit down the trail, AND they are ugly.

Now if you do something like RangerX did, thats another story. His is a partial exterior cage designed just to protect the driver in case of a roll, nice and simple, excellent design and execution.

However the same can be accomplished stayingf internal and if you keep it real close to the cab/gusset into the cab, body panel damage will be minimal anyways.

Yes. Only problem is most of the ones ive seen have been owned by Texans and for whatever reason the Texans on this site are bad about cutting their roofs off. Rick has a really nice cage setup w/ harnesses and racing seats and he still has a roof. There are a few others but i havent seen them in person.

Don't do as I did and forget to cover up everything with some kind of protective cloth. when I started grinding on some tubes I wiped out the glass on my gauges, they were about 3' away and pitted bad. I had the window glass covered and forgot about the gauges.

there are lots of internal cage Rangers and Explorer's running around. Everything from gettting a simple Jeg's 6 point cage setup to completely custom caged trucks with little/no frame left.

Research.

If its not done right it can kill you, so its important to have the correct cage for the type of wheeling you plan to do, it is also important to use the correct materials, and the fabrication can make the difference between you walking away or not.

I am currently building a external cage and the amount of extra tube i had to buy was not worth it. should have saved up and had it don right by a fab shop. i took one meashurment at a time and notched and wealded it together my self. it is much cheaper this way but unless you have alot of free time and money, id say have it done profetionaly and save yourself the hassle. its true if you take all the angles and bring them in the will build it exactly the way you want it. i have found that it has been about three months and it is still not done. id say that exo will save some of the body panels and if you lay it on its side it maght hold the body together better, but you just cant beat how clean and like 410fortune said it dous ad size, but good luck!

Have you seen any of these 6 point jegs cages in rangers? I havnt seen any but have thought about ordering one cause they are cheaper then buying a bender. Just concerned they wont fit very tight and they will be to close to the head and cause more harm then good.

the only reason of doin this is that i need a little bit of protection because im finally lifted and on 33's. so i was lookin into a exo because i deal with spl and i dont want to mess with the inside of the cab. i think that is goin into the limits of the rules. also i like the look but i havent seen an exploer with it. as for knowin how much i need i dont know how to do that yey but ive seen some ideas on other suvs

Not an Explorer but a Cherokee with an exo. I agree with Jamie... way too heavy on an already heavy truck and too big for tight trails.

Was wondering that myself. But after looking at that first pic, it looks like they have a tube that runs along the rocker panels that act as a slider and that it turns in towards the front clip and most likely welded then turns into rear clip. Clip might not be the right word. Then the exo is welded to that. Just an idea.
