Premade VS. Custom Cat Back Exhaust

If I am going to go the dual route, should I do true duals (two mufflers) or because I have the dual inlet muffler just go with dual outlet and two tailpipes??

don't know if anybody has asked this yet or not... but what are your goals with it? increased performance? gas mileage? granted you'll get both depending on what you get...

i personally like the single in/single out style on explorers, duals are all right, but i don't think SUV's look right with them... again is personal preference. i have a 40 series muffler on my Explorer, and i love it. got a local shop to do it, single in/single out. only cost me 130, and that price is pretty much from the catback, including the muffler.

depends on what you want, anything is possible with enough money and will.

yeah my 01 sport has the 4 cats

i got 4 cats

Labor on a cat back should not be more than $100. I got a buddy that just does exhausts, and man you should see him work. It takes him about an hour to do the complete job. I would only go to a shop that specializes in ehausts.

I got an Imco, and I very pleased with the results.

With gas prices the way they are I have to go for gas mileage haha. But, performance is a great "side effect" of my mpg increasing haha. I also want something that is going to have a good deep sound to it. I will probably go with a dual in muffler and I just need to decide on the outlets.

I was thinking that having the dual in going to one tailpipe would provide more pressure in the system (due to the fact that its two into one and all the Exhaust gas is pushed through a single pipe) this seems to me like it would be beneficial. I honestly do not know much, if anything about exhaust so I am just spit balling here haha. I would think that running dual in, dual out would cause the system to lose pressure (over the stock dual in, single out).

Still trying to figure out what I am going to do. I really appreciate all the input.

So, What size pipe should I get?

OK, so to this point, it seems the the majority is in favor of the custom made exhaust. I have to say that I am starting to lean that way, but I still need to find a good shop.

So here is the question, what size pipe, what muffler, and one tail or two?? 4.0 SOHC.

This is where I really need some input, I honestly do not know much of anything about exhaust systems.

1. Still personal preference, but I'd say Magnaflow.
2. One
3. No bigger than 2.5"

Yep.

OK. So, I should determine what muffler I like, then get a shop to make me a custom cat back with 2.5" pipe?

Choo got it maing.

Some muffler shops (around here anyway) have every muffler you might want in stock and are cheaper than online prices as well. Just find a shop, call them up and ask if they do.

Pretty much, yes.

I got quoted a ridiculous amount of $525 for a simple muffler swap. Which is why I'm going with the Mac Catback with the Intake for $10 more. Good deal IMO.. Shop around, get quotes.

I made a custom intake ($100 or so) and now I need an exhaust. So, 2.5" pipe and a muffler of my choice. Now, whats the deal with Y pipes?? I see all the sound clips I find people have y Pipes. What is the benefit of a y pipe? I understand that it takes the two pipes coming from the header and merges them into one before the muffler, but what are the benefits?

Once again, I have no clue about exhaust. But, that is whats great about this site, because I know someone can help me out.

I suppose for back pressure. I guess it depends on how you use the Y pipe.

Thats what I was thinking. Many y pipes I have seen though seem to not be very smooth, as in it seems like that way they are fab'd up would cause turbulance rather than keeping the exhaust gas flowing. I really do not know.

I have also heard talk of X pipes? What is the deal with those? Once again to me (I admit I have no clue about this) it seems like it would cause a great deal of turblulance.

I'm a beginner when it comes to exhaust also, X pipes are also used for back pressure IIRC.

Well then, I guess I should look into one of the two. I have heard that the SOHC likes back pressure and a lack there of can be an issue.

Yea, you'll lose torque if you lose too much back pressure.
