The 2wd F100 had 5 on 4.5. Ive got a buddy with an 82 F100 2wd and its 5 on 4.5. Its a popular rear end for dirt track guys. Yes, if its a late model it will still be big bearing and 31 spline with the stronger non-banjo style housing.

but, that f-100 wasnt setup for a 4 link right? This axle had 4 link mounts and the coil buckets are still on the axle. And its 28 spline, I just counted.

Some guys from pirate said it may be from an older lincon continental, those had a HD housing and 28 spline, but they arnt sure if they were 5 on 4.5 and also think they may have a 9.75 center section

Lookie

Dont mind the booger cuts, those were the leaf spring perches, but right next to the perches you can see what I think is the old upper control arm mount, and in another you can see one of the coil buckets.

Yea that came out of some kind of car. You dont want it.

does the 28 vs 31 spline make that much of a difference?

From PBB - "Fullsize passenger cars used 4.5" circle 57-72. '73-78 they went to 5", midsize stayed at 4.5". Lincoln Marks are a midsize chassis, but use the fullsize wheel pattern. In 79 they went back to 4.5, but I don't they had 9"s anymore.

Fullsize from '65 used a parallel 3 link with panhard. Midsize(including Lincoln Marks) used a triangulated 4 link."

That confuses me even more, its a fullsize axle which would amke sense for the 5 on 4.5 up to 72' BUT it dosent have a 3 link, im almost positive its a 4 link. Ill check again later today.

yes it makes a huge difference

put it this way, could a 28 spline big bearing 9" shaft handle 37's

just convert it to 31 spline. i took a EB 28 spline BB 9" and swaped axles and 3rd member to so i have 31 spline now

since i was planning on spooling it, coild I just change to a 31 spline spool or does the 28 spline carrier use different bearings and I need to get a whole new 3rd.

I think the spool idea will work fine. You could also think about a mini spool

dosent minispool fit inside the stock carrier, meaning Ill still need a new carrier to convert to 31 spline?

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5985181&postcount=9

im not sure about the bearing sizes, i bought a rebuilt spooled 3rd for my 9" so i dont know if a 31 spline spool fits in the old 3rd or not. if it doesnt you can get a stock 31 spline 3rd for dirt cheap anyways. dont even bother with a mini spool. they arent as strong as a full spool and a full spool for a 9" is like 100 dollars

A mini spool is far stronger than a lockrite.

Yes a mini fits inside the carrier. However the things that matter for spline count are the side gears. They go away with a mini spool. If you just wanted to run a welded rear its fairly possible that you could just slap new sides and spiders in it from any 31 spline 9 inch. (think harrys)

I never considered a mini spool, seen lots of carnage pics of 9" mini's

Ill be going to harrys in pottsgrove this coming weekend, ill see what they got.

(rookie, talk to marci about that other junkyard I have another place with a d44 for 250)

After lookin closer, it does appear to be a 3 link or something, unless it had trailing arms I think 2 of the "arm" mounts are acually shock mounts.

so the first 9" is scrap, but look at the difference in the 5.13 and 2.50 9" pinions

getting 36x12.5x15 TSL SX's this weekend, along with (hopefully) a new 44 and 9" and 5 on 5.5 steelies.

5.13 right, 2.50 left

Swap date is tentative for late november/early december. I want to get it done by new years run.

Dana 44 is coming this weekend, along with 4 36" SX's. Got a matching spare at the boneyard for 18 bucks. Gears are the 5.13's with a aussie front and spooled rear, going in next week after disk conversion is done on the 9".

Ive got everything but brake parts, the 44, and gear installs/lockers and I only have 400 into the swap.

Have the axles already been rebuilt with new seals, balljoints(front), bearings, etc? You might want to consider doing that before the swap.

*agrees with Zainy*

Micah, I still have all the part #'s from my rebuild if you need them...And I get a helluva discount from the local 4x4 shop. I know you probably still get a good price from the offroad shop you used to work for but it might be cheaper down here. Definitely add some extra time in to rebuild your axles, I don't wanna have to do it for you on the trail  It's taken me two days of fighting with my 44 just to get all the seals, races, bearings, nuts and bolts in and I still have the hubs to do (as soon as I can figure out where the hell my lock washer/nuts got to).

But I'm still going to get mine done before you :D

Linds is definately right about rebuilding the axle. Its easier before its under the truck. Spend a few bucks now and dont worry about it later.

who said I wasnt rebuilding it? With the master rebuild comes all new seals and bearings, and im getting new wheelbearings if the ones that are on the junkyard spindle I pull are junk. If not ill just repack them. Balljoints im hoping wont need to be replaced, but if they do then they do.

Im still betting something will blow up on morgan and ill beat linds anyways. :D
