I wrecked my '98 XLT w/ the 5.0 AWD...
If I buy my truck back, can I convert my new '98 XLT SOHC 4.0 2WD to a 5.0?
I was thinking about leaving it 2WD and putting the 5.0 in my new truck. Which engine has the more readily available upgrades? I am new with this platform, so I don't know what the best option would be.
...2WD...AWD...????????????????????
dah!!
WHAT SHOULD I DO?

5.0 will go into the new ex just fine. i personally would go with 4x4 (not awd) but that's just because im an off roader. the biggest mod you can make to a 4.0 is replacing it with a 5.0 and from there there's plenty of bolt ons and internals you can upgrade.

So it will bolt up to my existing tranny? What about wiring and stuff??

Easiest way would be to disconnect both bodies from the chassis-and roll the v8 chassis under the good body-then start swapping electronics-
You have the benefit of having both trucks there-

the v6 trans will not work with the v8-nor will the computer or harnesses-

You'll need to swap out the engine/tranny/transfer case as well as the engine/tranny wiring harness and computer. You'll also need to swap the radiator and exhaust system. If you want to go 2wd you'll need to get a 2wd tailshaft for the V8 transmission (which requires a tear down of the tranny) and a driveshaft to fit. If you want to keep the AWD you need to swap the front axle, steering knuckles, brakes and CVs from the wrecked AWD in to the 2wd.

Basically, it will be a lot of work, but just tedious, not difficult. Everything should bolt in so you won't need anything custom made, but you'll need time and a helping hand.

If you plan on leaving the engines basically stock then there isn't much advantage to swapping to 5.0L unless you tow a lot.

I don't think I can use the front hubs/control arms/cv joints. The front suspension is screwed...

The ball joint section of the lower control arm actually broke off...
But I am no expert... I guess it is probably not worth it.:(

Sorry to hear of the wreck, it's very good that you are okay.

You can use most of the needed swap parts. You would need to decide on 2WD or 4WD, the transmission is good for any version of 4WD, but for 2WD the trans would have to be altered/replaced.

It would likely be easier to make it 2WD, sell that trans and buy a 2WD version. How much do they want for the truck, you will not have much more to sell from that truck. Good luck,

I don't know yet. They haven't appraised the damage yet. Iwill know in the next few days.

As long as the knuckles and wheel bearing/hub assemblies are good then you should be fine. The 2wd and 4wd both used the same upper and lower control arms, only the knuckles out were different.

What are you talking about when you say "knuckle"??

The part that mounts between the upper and lower ball joints that turns when you turn the wheel left and right. The tie rod end 'ends' into it and your brake caliper bracket and wheel bearings mount on it as well.

Its hard to tell from the pics if they are still good or not. Its depends if the lower ball joint broke or if it slid on the ground on the knuckle at all. You obviously broke tie rod ends but the knuckle could still be fine.

Even if the knuckles are shot on the V8 you can find replacements pretty cheap. Any of the guys on here that install a Superlift or do a solid axle swap should have their stock knuckles they can sell you for cheap. I'll have a set from my 97 this winter when it gets SAS'd.

I will keep you updated with the price that insurance offers for me to buy the truck back for and we'll see if it's worth it.

Does the knuckle kinda look like this?

Okay. Thanks.

if its cheap enough, take your time rebuild and beef up the V8 and swaping out the front end stuff shouldn't be too bad, most of it should come out in one big chunk of an assembly. maybe while you're at it and got it all apart maybe a 4406 swap too?

I am at work and don't have a lot of time to be searching... so could you please explain the 4406 swap please...?? Thanks in advance
