Something w/ rabbits. 72.5 pages of BS

It was hot today. Altho all I did was mow the lawn. There is no way that i'm turning anything resembling a bolt. 6 12 hour days makes Crawler cranky. Any way I can't wait to see your progress by the time I return from Arazona on the 17th. Stay cool and hydrated:thumbsup:

Yeah this weekend was the worst week to do any car work. A few more days of these conditions and its supposed to be a lot cooler!! Although I probably wont get much done with work 'n all.

ugh,

Imagine working an outdoor job 7a-4p.......need to find an indoor job

That was kind of the weird thing about it -- it seems to be that the garage was heating itself up because when I stepped outside, it actually was a bit better. Maybe it is because of the slight breeze outside .. so maybe the garage doors (which are open most of the time) are just angled so that they are in a blind spot (maybe blocked by the rest of the house) to any breeze.

Yeah, i've been shopping around for a house....definitely with a garage. If i get one i'm definitely investing in a huge fan like this

I don't mean to get too off-subject here, but you guys mentioned the dash vin earlier. Take pictures of the vin on the top of the firewall before you cut it all up, because you are going to have to prove it came off that vehicle. Also, keep the right side front frame rail, cause there are numbers on top of the rail that you need to show you did not vin switch the rig. You might have already covered them up when you welded the shock hoops in there, but the numbers are a "dot matrix" and right behind the curved portion of the right side frame rail. Take some pictures of that too, and keep the right side frame rail with the numbers on it. Especially if you come out west, you would have a hard time registering that rig without the numbers. Might have to call it a "special construction" vehicle.

LOL darnit! I dropped off the sections of the frame rail at the recycling center today. But I still have the VIN tag so I'll hold on to that and maybe even reattach it back onto the body once its ready to roll.

Can you get that section back? Its real important you have the numbers and that they match. If you can, leave the VIN plate attached to whatever piece you cut it off of, with the original rivets. Don't put it back on yourself.....bad idea. Check with your local State Police and see what they want you to have, and if they need to re-attach the VIN plate, or you can do it. In California, if you put the plate back on yourself and you did not have any secondary ID numbers (like the frame numbers you cut off), you might lose the truck. I would hate to have some over-zealous officer of the law sieze your vehicle because it does not have any VIN numbers, or that they suspect its been altered.

I dont think theres any way that I can get the section back :( -- its probably sitting in some foundry being melted down or something. But I have no intention to register this vehicle for any road driving so it will probbly be a trailer queen for the rest of its life.

Do you have to register it as an off-highway vehicle like out here in the People's Republic of California?

Its not registered. I unregistered it about a year ago after too many repair order tickets for bumper height, tires sticking out, and a few other things. Currently, it has a Maryland tag that says "SAMPLE" in the back and a 1964 Philippines tag in the front -- both from E-bay :).

.....and a 1964 Philippines tag in the front :).
Well, I guess if you get stopped in it, you can just start speaking Tagalog (sp), make a bunch of popping noises and turn you head from side to side rapidly while looking confused. The Officer will just get frustrated and walk away. Happens all the time.:p::confused:

LOL Mr Kennedy.

I might take tomorrow off and build the damn frame.
Not sure though, either that or go to work and get hammered.

insane, that is all.

its going to be a sick rig when done, are you going to be able to remove your trans when this is all done or are we going for a "pull the entire drivetrain" style build when something goes wrong?

Yup yup, there will be access panels from the top for unbolting and what not. The plan is for the entire floor to be cut out (after the cage is in so the body is already welded to the cage) so that should give me control of how the floor and tunnel is going to be.

The drivetrain goal, if its possible, is to allow the engine, trans and transfer case to be able to drop out from the bottom. Also, I will try to group all the connectors together to make disconnecting them easier. The exhaust section that normally goes under the transmission will be going on top (I'll be making a pair headers, got a guy up in Canada laser cutting a set of flanges for the SOHC). Because of this, there will be more heat being transfered onto the floor/tunnel area so a little trick that hopefully will work out is to double layer most of the tunnel with an air pocket between the two layers and this should allow me to route some of the radiator's exhausted air down into the trans tunnel towards the front of the vehicle/engine.

Iz, if you need help with the headers let me know, ive done a few stainless headers and exhausts in the past.

If you build it, you can wheel.............
Wheel it, with my fingers crossed hoping it doesnt just fall apart :)

Oh wow, I'll keep that in mind. I've never done anything before the cats before.

SOME progress today.
First the engine was moved back all the way to the body brace I welded on -- so now its just bit over 12" behind of where it used to be:

Engine and axle clearance -- should make for a healthy panhard bar location:
engine_clearance.jpg

And, like my first SAS thread, this build cant progress w/o some conduit so one stick was used to mock the chassis front angle. The conduit was welded at 45 degrees.

Then I felt that 45 degrees wasnt enough so I added about three more to it when I cut and tacked the real chassis:

So here is one half of the chassis mocked in place:

Wow! Keep going, that's awsome! I would have never thought of moving the engine back to clear the suspension. You are basically building a buggy with an explorer body on top.
