After much reading I have come to the conclusion that there is no definitive thread weighing the pros and cons of various exhaust set ups. Hopefully there will be enough interest expressed in this thread that it will be deemed STICKY. That having been said, if we could please refrain from comparing apples with oranges (i.e. muffler X on a v6 will not sound like Muffler X on a v8 so lets not say they will sound sorta kinda the same). Also please try to refrain from the obvious; "you can have it installed at a muffler shop", etc.

I will start the thread by asking users post with the following format:

VEHICLE: Ford Explorer
YEAR: 1996
ENGINE: 5.0L V8
PREVIOUS EXHAUST: OEM
NEW EXHAUST:
Cat-Back Kit: Yes/No
MUFFLER: 50 Series SUV Performance
MUFFLER PART NUMBER: 524554
SINGLE or DUAL IN: Dual
INPUT DIAMETER: 2.25"
SINGLE or DUAL OUT: Dual
OUTPUT DIAMETER: 2.25"

INSTALLATION: A brief description of the installation. Was a Y pipe used to combine the exhaust before entering the muffler, etc.

SOUND: Please describe the sound as objectively as possible. Even better post a sound clip. What about that in cab drone?

REMARKS: I like the sound of Muffler X better than Muffler Y

Hopefully, this will provide us all with a standardized format making it much easier to decide on the perfect exhaust for your particular type of vehicle.

That having been said, can anyone help me choose an exhaust that will give my 96 XLT V8 Explorer that perfect rumble.

VEHICLE: Ford Explorer
YEAR: 1994
ENGINE: 4.0L V6
PREVIOUS EXHAUST: OEM
NEW EXHAUST:
MUFFLER: Flowmaster Original 40 (I'm sceptical because the shop took it from stock, I didn't buy it myself and it is pretty quiet)
SINGLE or DUAL IN: Single
INPUT DIAMETER: 2.25"
SINGLE or DUAL OUT: Single
OUTPUT DIAMETER: 2.25"

INSTALLATION: Shop welded the Flowie to the existing piping behind the cat and ran all new piping from the muffler straight out the back.

SOUND: Sound is too quiet for me. There is very minimal drone at certain RPM's.

REMARKS: Note that the clips are with an Ifab open intake with the stock intake tube. It sounds nice when you hop on it, but other than that it was way to quiet for me. I will most likely put an IMCO single chamber muffler on my 1996 because I like it loud.

Sound clip of me driving by
Sound clip of it at idle

VEHICLE: 1988 Ford Bronco II 4x4
YEAR: 1988
ENGINE: 1997 GT-40 5.0L
PREVIOUS EXHAUST: hehe
NEW EXHAUST: Torque Monster conversion headers (for TTB trucks and GT-40 engine, with or withouth P heads). 1997 Explorer downpipes with stock primary cat converters and 4 ea 02 sensors, downpipes directly into a dual inlet single outlet muffler (2.5" in, single 3" out) 3" pipe up and over rear axle, tucked up under rear bumper for departure angle.

MUFFLER: I will get the brand name

INSTALLATION: Saved some $$ by using the stock explorer pipes, the drivers side piep did have to be modified to clear my dual sump oil pan and front driveshaft.

SOUND: Sounds like a 5.0L powered Bronco, nice rumble, sounds pretty mean actually

REMARKS: This thread should also include intake mods if we are talking about exhaust tone. I have a cold air fed KKM with a stock 5.0L GT-40 intake, for now :)

jtsmith what kind of exhaust is that it sounds awesome I love the sound

Up to the muffler it is all stock, then as I said before it is a flowmaster series 40 dual in/out suv muffler with 2.5 inch pipes ran to 3.5 x 12 angled tips. I think my engine mods have a lot to do with the sound, although I did have this exhaust before the engine swap, and it sounded terrific. The in cab drone is great at first, but on a long trip it doesn't go away, ever, you need a loud stereo to cover it. It is great for showing off, but to live with it, well I'm seriously cosidering a quieter way. maybe go back to stock.

And with that statement, I've ruled a MAC out and will probably go with a 50 series flowie.

VEHICLE: Ford Explorer Sport
YEAR: 2000
ENGINE: 4.0L V6 SOHC
PREVIOUS EXHAUST: OEM
NEW EXHAUST:
MUFFLER: Flowmaster SUV 50 Series (replaced a very ricey sounding Magnaflow after about a month).
SINGLE or DUAL IN: Dual
INPUT DIAMETER: 2.25" (?)
SINGLE or DUAL OUT: Single
OUTPUT DIAMETER: 2.5" (w/ rolled SS tip, 3" diameter)
INSTALLATION: Shop welded the Flowie to the existing piping behind the cat and ran all new piping from the muffler straight out the back. (yeah, what he said).
SOUND: Resonated too much in the cab. I since had an aftermarker Flo Pro resonator put in. Much better now. Still a mellow rumble outside, much less resonance inside.

O.K I've never heard of this, I would like to try that alternative. Fill me in.

BTW thanks for the comments, but I still haven't ever floored it with this new engine, that was only 5500 RPM's when it shifted

heh heh
