Truckhaven 2001!!

OK, first things first!

Hi Ray, and welcome back from wherever you were hiding. In case you didn't know, I have the OME springs and shocks on now and am very happy with them, at least on the road. :)

Now, about that CB, I'm one of the ones with a hand-held. I also have a magnetic mount antenna which I use with it, since the antenna in the handheld is pretty cumbersome when you're in the car. Range is pretty decent, though not quite as good as a dash-mounted unit. I've only got 4 watts input, rather than 5 which if I remember correctly is the legal limit. I won't say not to get a handheld, as it has the advantage of portability, but a unit mounted in the dash is much easier to handle when you are driving.

I don't think that I have to add much to Gerald's post on the usefulness of the CB, but I will anyway, since I'm longwinded and I have a useful example. At Penndel last week, part of our group took the high road and part took the low road from one spot to another. I was the last truck in the high road group. When I crested the hill, another truck wanted to go down the hill. The CB made it easy to check with the other group to make sure none were coming up the hill.

Now, as far as the front tow point, I installed a front hitch on mine. I adapted the license plate so that you cannot even see the hitch without removing the plate, which is pretty easy since I have it mounted in the hitch. It's a pretty strong tow point, since it spreads the forces of towing across both frame rails. I got strapped out of some difficult mud with it a couple of weeks ago (see Pines and Penndel trip report for pics). So that is another option for the front.

Finally, Tim, you would indeed pass up my 1650 mile record if you were to travel to Truckhaven. That practically across the whole country. :) I'm still kind of wishing that I could swing that trip, but I'm still holding out for Colorado Falls 2001. Probably....... But then again, I don't know. :D No commitments at this point, that's all I can say.

MLK works for me. I just wish time would go by faster. After seeing the last Truckhaven run in the magazine and not making Moab, I am really ready to do a full event run.

I really want to go to Truckhaven, I would have to say that it will be the pinnacle of Runs for this site. I have always wanted to take a road trip out West, not to mention a buddy of mine lives out in Cali and I have a cousin who lives out there as well that I haven't seen in a long time. My friend that lives out there will probably be on the East coast around the time of Truckhaven (Dec.-Jan.), and I think he would be willing to take the ride with me back to Cali. So I wouldn't be alone and I'd get a chance to see the rest of the country. Personaly, I think half the fun would be getting there. I don't mind the drive at all, so long as I have an IV drip of caffeine constantly going.;) Heck, maybe I could even drag Stephen out with me, what do ya say?!:) I will still need to think seriously about it and do a lot of planning and preparing, but I am strongly considering the possibility of making it out there. Time will tell.

PS. I did consider the fact that I would top the cake for distance traveled as well!:D

I'd love to go out there, but I don't know if I can get that much time off or not. Map says it will take about 42hrs and 2300 miles to get there. Matt could definitely hang the award up in that case. I'll just have to see how the schedule works out.

I was really interested in going, so I did a net search to find out were exactly Truckhaven is...got the GPS coordinates, looked it up on MapBlast and found, to my dismay, that it's a 33 hour drive (2,010 miles)...If school didn't start back up the week before, I'd be there; last year's looked like a blast (never been out in the middle of the desert w/my truck). Grr...oh well, maybe next time.

MLK Weekend Gets My Vote!

My better half has a better chance of getting a 3 or 4 day weekend during the MLK than on a regular weekend. I vote MLK.
Rick

Rick, looks like MLK weekend is good for everybody. Can we assume this to be the weekend? A three day weekend beats a two day weekend every time, although I will be there whenever it is!

No Boundaries

Being In annapolis I Think id top your miles traveled by about 15 miles or so =). Im planing on going, I Can take a week off school. Let me know if you want to make a trip of it. Anyone else on the east coast going?? Or possibly?

Hey Jay

That sounds great, I'll keep in touch and let you know how it folds out for me. Your right though, you would beat me in distance from Annapolis!;)

Ok, MLK it is. The run is now officially scheduled for January 12-15 with the main organized runs to be held Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th.

Hey guys, just wondering what to expect.. never been to Truckhaven... what was the damage report this year for explorers? Just want to know what to expect that could happen. :)

Nick

Flyers/Posters?

There was talk of flyers, or posters a while back for this event. I'd be happy to get them to the local dealers & parts stores here in the area. I've seen several modified Explorers in the area that don't seem to be on the site. Also the local Ford Dealerships might kick in some raffle prizes? I've also been dealing with some of the local radio stations lately. They might blurb us as we get closer?

Tow points on a "94

Nick, and anyone else intrerested.

I have a '93, with the same frame set up as yours. For a rear tow point, you can obtain a "D" ring and pin. The "D" (actually more like a "C") fits over the rear step just below the license plate, and the Pin goes through the end of the "C", thru the trailer hitch ball hole in the step, and threads into the other side of the "C", These are available ot Off Road shops, just for this purpose. I have also found them at Larger hardware stores such as Home Depot or OSH. Just make sure you get the largest , strongest one that will fit. After your'e done wheelin' you can easily remove and stow it.

As for the front, tow hooks Aren't too expensive, and available at Pep Boys, Kragen, or even Walmart, I believe. I found that there are holes already in the frame that work (I think Ford has them for tie down points when they're shipping the vehicles). As far as interfering with the air dam. Take it off and THROW IT AWAY. Actually you can keep it if you want, but if you plan do any halfway serious wheelin', remove it for the trail (EASY) , reinstall later. I guarantee it will get torn off by the trail. Ditto for the useless tupperware "ground effects" Ford puts on the rocker panels of the '93/4: they just become trail trash and litter. Remove them and toss them in the dumpster! ( or reinstall later) Truckhaven tought me that lesson about 7 or 8 years ago!

You said you might remove your running boards: The trail will take those off for you too, if you don't.

Also, get a 30' nylon "yank" stap, with loops in the end , NOT METAL HOOKS. hooks can become deadly flying misguided missles. The straps are often yellow, and found at 4WD shops. Read GJARRETT'S equipment guide under articles... its right on!

We're In

Rick,

T2K was just too much fun! Count us in for T2K+1

Truckhaven

Well, Rick and Rick (ExplorerGM) Sorry I haven't replied for a while. been really busy with work and moving and all. Anyways, don't think I'll be able to make Arizona July 28 weekend, already had too much time off work, plus as you may know Rick H. Going to Rubikon with you, Tom Rios, and whoever else is going. My buddy Winter put Tom's 35" tires on his Navajo for him and it looked so good, I went and put 35 BFG Mudders on '92 XLT. Very minor cutting and bending and still even with the 4" TrailMaster there is no rubbing except on the inside of the rear well. I had that rub with the 33's though. I also heard from Tom that you are putting 35's on your's after the transformation. Cn't wait to see that thing. Anyway MLK weekend is good for me for Truckhaven, and I'll be bringing my buddy Winter along too. So I'm back online and if either of you would like to go to Truckhaven from Sep. 1st - Dec. 31st e-mail me at f150chstrk@aol.com and I'll hopefully be able to make it.
Take care,
Colin 'Fenderguy' Ignacio

I'll be there!

I'm relatively new to this game, just got my 5.5" superlift on my explorer a couple weeks ago, hopefully by that time I'll have a couple more things done. If possible, put me on the mailing list or whatever to let me know the details. Oh, by the way, hopefully there's no prejudice against the underage participants :) Thanks, and hope to see you there
