1956 F100 Explorer Chassis Swap

Hi BUDDY!
I have been following your progression.
In my humble opinion, the idea of an AWD 56 Ford PU is awesome!

Your project injected enthusiasm towards launching mine; a 1950 Fargo (Dodge) PU over a 1999 Explorer XLT model. Mine has everything functional, I drove it home a near year ago and parked it. Nothing wrong with it, lots of power due to it's 4.0 SOHC engine. In stock condition, far overkill in power and utility.

Even in Canada, parts are so inexpensive new and used. Basically, just the skin of the Fargo is to be used. Funny, some of my Debbie downer Hot Rod buddies frown at my objective, but it's not an original idea as many have tackled this kind of project.

The problem I face initially is the body of the 50's appears narrower. I have taken some crude tight-tape measurements in advance but still not confirmed as to fit. I will need to shorted both the frame and drive shaft by 5" as the Fargo measures 107" wheelbase vs. Explorer 112". This has been costed and scheduled upon removal of both bodies.

After all, I own the 1999 Explorer and me nothing... yes FREE! Well some time swapped for working on another Explorer. The Fargo I paid half of what the guy wanted or $1,700 as it was already hot rodded. It has a 9" Ford rearend, and a Chev 307 and a Turbo 350. I don't like the way the previous guy built it. Crude welds and crap wiring, fit and finish is poor. But the Explorer yields all kinds of possibilities... Power windows, cruise, AWD Electric select, heavier duty frame and suspension.

The bonus is that I don't need expensive front clip from Camaro or Mustangs, and universal wiring kits, and other expensive bolt on improvements etc, etc.

Can you share more about specific pitfalls you overcame during the body fit to frame stuff?

Cheers,
Dave

Hey buddy! Love the project and you inspired me to do one of my own! Have some questions about what you did for the windshield wipers?

Great project truck - it'll be worth the work !

I've enjoyed reading thru the posts , and it's clear that many others have an interest in using the Explorer chassis under different vehicles. I found a '96 Explorer with 61,000 miles , that had been sideswiped by a semi while parked on a city street. Damage all high on the body. Saved it from the crusher ! Then placed a Studebaker body, with 64,000 miles on it, onto the Explorer chassis. Hardest part was sorting out the miles and miles of Ford wiring ! Had to use 1.5" wheel spacers to get the track out wide enough. This truck drives and handles like new.

If you guys are interested , I can also post pics of the chassis after it was restored, but before the body was placed on it. Just don't know if the interest is there ? Thanks - Best of luck to you.

BenMar, You have built a very nice truck. The way you fit the instrument cluster to the dash is inspirational - looks like it came that way.
the letters on your intake is another nice touch. Chassis looks great. thanks for sharing. FairlaneGuy in Manchester TN.

subscribing good luck seems cool i Had considered putting my 51 f1 on my 94 explorer frame but went a different route cant wait to see what i missed out on
I'm actually trying to find some info on this because I have a chance to get a 53 F100 and a 94 Ford Explorer and want to make a prerunner out of it but I'm not sure if the body will fit the frame I know it will fit the 95 to 2000 frame but not sure if it will fit the 94 and lower frame

Did ever get around to finishing it up. I Have a 1954 F100 I'm planning on doing the same thing with. It will be the boys and my project.
Do you have any more pics.

Buddy hasn't been here since I found his thread and then I joined the Explorer Forum. It would be nice to see it now.

I'd like to find one of those big window trucks and do a frame swap, like this
