1956 F100 Explorer Chassis Swap

the AWD system is alright, Ive beat on mine (had it in a ranger with a 5.0) and it took it. It does suck up a lot of power though. Also if you think you can cheat the system by just dropping the front shaft you cant cause the vehicle wont hold in park anymore and slowly creep away (others say they flat out roll but my parking brake works rather well). Long story short they arent known for breaking as far as I know. You could still pull your boat and whatnot. Just gonna get less than ideal fuel mileage

AWD Discussion Cont'd and My Latest Adventure

I definitely do NOT want to have to worry about my truck rolling away, LOL.... so maybe I should stay away from the AWD's. Probably less headache to mess with anyway. So, I will make the executive decision to move forward with NO AWD. Thanks for the info kanuck15!!!

Well, the last couple days have been (besides my day job) spent trying to round-up Explorer purchasing funds. My wife LOVES it when I have no more than 2 "extra" cars at a time. And she does NOT LIKE when I buy a red car, let's just say my luck flipping red cars has not done as well as other colors. I haven't lost money, but got lucky to break even on them..... EVERYTIME!!! Last one I had, I spent two full days messing with a truck that the engine was locked up (not a simple starter replacement I first assumed) and made a lousy $50. I think I made $4/hr. It's like a bad omen in my house. Well the 56 is greyellowish, so it's all good, but then there is this project that I thought I could flip so easily:

IMG_20130416_092206_021.jpg

A RED 1979 Mercedes 450SL Roadster Hardtop Convertible that I FINALLY got the title to (6 months later..... long story) and have not turned a bolt in the darn thing (Didn't want to touch until the title arrived) until recently. So, it starts.... with gas poured right into the intake, no humming sound when I turn the key. I knew right then and there it had to be the fuel pump. Autozone $152.99, O'Reilly $152.99, and a third local outfit was $177.99 OUCH!!!!! Just to double-check, I bench-tested the pump and it was confirmed.

I only paid $600 for the sucker and there is no guarantee that replacing this part will make this car even run! Not only does it have this problem, it's missing the entire interior, trim, bumpers, and so much more of the exterior. There is a swap meet/car show coming up Saturday that I am planning on going to and thought how awesome it would be to have this "piece" running and sold for more than people are wanting to pay for it on Craigslist! I've had it listed over a week and no takers at a grand. IT'S A HARD-TOP/SOFT-TOP CONVERTIBLE MERCEDES!!!! Why am I selling it so cheap, oh yeah, who wants a project that doesn't run and missing EVERYTHING.

I don't want to give the car away, but people are just not paying for cars this time of year without some major discounting. I'm in the dilemma myself, no extra money to buy an Explorer, but more importantly, my wife says I reached my max in cars....... so I came up with the BEST solution!!! I found another Mercedes just down the street my wife has NEVER seen! The owner lives out of state and has a property keeper visit his shop daily to make sure everything is still there.

Well, today was my lucky day, the property guy was there, gave me the owner's number and I called him. The guy said he'd turned down a $750 offer a few months back. I told him that I only had $300 to pay and only needed a few parts. He said, you know what? You sound like you need it more than me, it's sat for over a year now, take it for $300. Done, and no rush to bring it home. It's not in the way where it sits, just load up my tools and go get the parts I need. (including the entire interior, mirrors, and that expensive fuel pump!)

There's just one little issue:

IMG_20130924_185512_480.jpg

Yeah, it's red..... I'm screwed....

Well, this weekend was a very productive one. Went to a swap meet/car show on Petit Jean Mountain in Arkansas. Had some delicious Chinese food. I got rid of the Mercedes Twins! I then went for a little drive to scope out a local 1953 F100 on a 98 Explorer frame that just popped up on Craigslist. Looked at a couple of Explorers and I think I found "the one!"

Back to the F100 first... it was beautiful.... however, it wasn't finished. Now, the 53-56's are virtually the same, however, the 56 featured a different style cab, most of the rest of the truck is basically the same. 1956 was the first year to introduce a 12V electrical system too.

The worst part of the whole visit was that the guy that owned it did not have much to do with the conversion, so I didn't get any advice, build pics, or other useful info. He did let me take pics though! Here are the pics originally posted on Craigslist:

Ok, those pics don't look too bad, but here are my close-ups that I managed to take that help point towards some design points that I should be considering (this is not meant to complain, poke fun at or say that it was done wrong - just important things that I noticed within all of the builder's hard work)

IMG_20130929_114140_945.jpg

I found some gaps, holes, and other major imperfections on the firewall where welding and fabricating took place, but did not completely seal the cab from engine compartment. Can't be a good thing.

IMG_20130929_114055_337.jpg

There's about a 2 inch gap between the radiator and the radiator support, will need to fabricate a mounting system so it doesn't end up in the fan during high speeds ;)

IMG_20130929_114005_962.jpg

Above pic is the driver-side floorboard near the rear corner. You can see the Explorer floorboard covering the original floorboard, not much mounting/sealing fabrication visible here. You can also see a sheet of metal that nearly seems like it is just laying on top of the wiring, but it is actually also the piece of metal covering the space in between the Explorer and F100.

IMG_20130929_113815_901.jpg

The above pic shows the dash end, the 53 dash could have been trimmed to the end which would have made for a better clearance for the Explorer dash. You can see how it looks pinched in the region with white paint visible on the left.

IMG_20130929_113805_380.jpg

The door/dash gap could use a little clean-up.

IMG_20130929_114131_611.jpg

This wiring may have been better mounted lower, perhaps?

IMG_20130929_115223_649.jpg

The alignment of the dash with the bottom of the windshield may need to be tweaked a bit. It's off by an inch. There's just no material in my mind I can think that could fill that gap between steel and plastic and allow the defrost vents to function as they should without better alignment.

Remember, like I said at the beginning, I am not trying to knock someone's HARD WORK, I am simply making statements to the effect that I should be mindful in these parts when I get to the point I am facing making decisions, measurements, and irreversible enhancements.

Kind of tired, so I am going to bed, going to continue tomorrow with the rest of the weekend's stories. I leave you with these awesome pics of a mobile grill I saw at Petit Jean Mountain:

So, I did it..... today I locked in my target, I pulled the trigger, I bit the bullet.... I did it. I BOUGHT AN EXPLORER!!!

Before I tell you much about it, I want to express some of the deciding factors of how I came up with the concluding factors of what I my eyes were set on.

#1 - Price: As little as possible while gaining as many features as I was desiring.
#2 - Running: If it doesn't run, how do you know if it has a good transmission, hubs, electrical system, etc.
#3 - Unmolested: As many "projects" as I've seen and had to deal with, an unmolested ANYTHING is much better than one someone has Fu@&ed with.
#4 - V8: Gotta have a V8... period.
#5 - Good Seats and dash: Although I may re-cover the seats or do some other modifications to the interior, I'd like to have these parts in good shape.
#6 - Clear Title: Oh..... I need to talk about this in the next post.
#7 - Not Wrecked: Nothing would suck worse than spending hours removing body panels down to the frame, only to find that the vehicle had been wrecked and now the frame is bent..... or worse.
#8 - Rust-free: Ok, this is a tie with #7 .
#9 - Non-4x4/AWD: It's a classic truck I'm building, not a rock crawler, it won't be on the road when it's icy. Enough research on the forums and Craigslist posts of people looking for transfer cases and having front-end issues (plus the helpful advice I've received) have steered me clear on this choice.
#1 0 - Color: Remember, red is a bad omen in my house. Gotta keep the wife happy. That was one of the ONLY things my wife requested..... add that to factor #1 . :)

THIS IS WHAT I FOUND:

It is a 1996 Explorer XLT 5.0 V8 2WD with a quarter million miles and still runs and drives, not wrecked (minus a few dings and dents from Wal-Mart shopping carts). It has a clear title, it's NOT RED, and only cost $650! Ok, it's astray from what I originally wanted in a 98-01, but for this price, the condition and other things I am looking for, it was the best choice.

The interior isn't the cleanest, but the engine compartment is not detailed out. All of that dust will help pinpoint any trouble/leaking areas and I will have much less parts to replace in the front-end. The overall cost will be less and once I sell off the body panels and haul the other steel to the scrapyard, I believe I can achieve my goal of it paying for itself with it's own profit!

I called the guy up (ad listed on Craigslist) and he originally wanted $900 but had been for sale since August 27th. He was a very talkative man. He actually tried to NOT sell me the Explorer twice, which was probably the reason why it was for sale so long. That and the miles anyway. He kept telling me about all the problems it had; windshield has a crack, rear door handle doesn't work, dings and dents here-and-there, headliner, and it being dirty. So, I had to explain what I was planning on doing with it for him to understand that each of those "problems" were NOT problems for me, I could care less that these things kept it from being a show truck. I just need the bones.

I do plan on rebuilding the 302, maybe a mild cam, and a few other performance items, just nothing too wild. Same with the trans. Miles do not matter to me, I plan on replacing all the brakes, bushings, hoses, belts, mounts and more.

I told him to go ahead and take it off Craigslist and consider it sold. Done..... NEXT!

Another little find I ran into today was this car dolly trailer. Got it down from $300 to $275, not a big savings, but anything was amazing as it was listed as "$300 FIRM". I will be using this to go pick up the Explorer on Friday. Although the Explorer runs and drives, I'm not looking forward to driving 2 hours at 70+ mph in the Explorer..... YET.

Would you be interested in selling and/or trading the name badge on top the engine that says Explorer v8 for one that just says 5.0 V8?

Good stuff in the making!

Nice score at $650:chug:

Absolutely, would be interested in trading. Once I get it here, I'll pull it off, clean it up and make sure it's in good shape and get with you on it for shipping details etc.

Great thanks a ton. I will get mine cleaned up a bit too.

A little advice for ANYONE writing a novel, as I sometimes do on here, COPY your work before you hit ANY buttons. If you get an error message, you are SCREWED, and you will have to type EVERYTHING AGAIN. Of course, you will NEVER be able to say the same things in the same manner as you did the FIRST TIME...... just sayin'. ;)

Ok, it's time to talk titles. When I started this venture with this truck, there was no title nor vin plate. My plan was to use the Explorer for said items. Shouldn't be a problem since I am using the dash that includes the vin plate plus the chassis. However, I believe I stumbled upon another, perhaps more beneficial idea.

It all happened Saturday when I went to the swap meet I previously mentioned. As I was walking around, I came across a table with a sign that read "Titles $50" so I had to ask what he had. He simply asked me "what do you need?" as he started to walk towards his truck that contained 3 shoe boxes full of titles. He had one! My luck had failed when we realized that the title already had a "buyer" listed and could not be used unless I paired it with an affidavit he supplied that might state that the buyer (in 1964) was incorrectly listed, as if I was even alive at that point to know this, HA! He even offered it for $25, which I passed saying that I'd think about it and come back when I had made it around to the other booths.

IMG_20130928_102220_550.jpg

I was nearing the end of the swap meet booths when I stumbled upon a couple of folders laying on a table with titles neatly tucked into plastic sleeves that had an open title for a 1956 F100 right there before my eyes..... for $125. I pulled out my wallet and started to count my cash. $58. I held it up and said, "this is all I got, 58 bucks."

She squinted her eyes with disapproval and as I was putting the money back into my wallet, she stopped me and said "My husband would kill me if he found out I sold a title for less than half-price, but today is your lucky day!" and handed me the title!

IMG_20130928_110538_762.jpg

Now, lots of thoughts were going through my head, "do I really need this title?", "couldn't I use this money for the other stuff I saw that I wanted to go back and get?", "what benefit would this give me?"

And then BOOM the most important aspect of the future of this truck lay in my hands and in my head. If I title, register, and insure the truck as an Explorer, should something terrible happen like theft, damage, or accident. How much will an insurance company pay for a Ford Explorer compared to a classic truck??? I think it's obvious what I must do!

The vin plate is a mere $125 expense from www.midfifty.com after proving ownership. Anyone have experience with doing anything like this? Advice, concerns, personal experiences?

The other awesome find that day was this $30 bargain at $50 OFF!!! http://www.crutchfield.com/S-B9yGk6JhzCm/p_220PRPDL45/Audiovox-PRO-PDL-45.html#overview-tab power door lock system that will be utilizing a keyless entry system paired with power windows once I find THAT bargain! With 4 locking modules, I will have 2 spares for the future or another project!

Here's a few cool pics I saw that day for your enjoyment:

Tomorrow is the BIG DAY!!!!! Bringing "Cookie" home! (that's Jasper's wife.... by the way:)

I'm excited, just gonna be late when I get home. Tools, jack, and other stuff loaded and ready to hitch the trailer so I can leave out after work. Will be getting hot and heavy really soon with this!!!

Sweet cant wait to see some progress.

IMG_20131005_170201_628.jpg

She is HERE!!! And I was even more impressed in the condition even after I got it home. Minus a couple of aged surfaces like one of the headlights, most things actually work that I never expected to. My wife's Edge kind of makes it look worse than it is. All power windows, power mirrors, compass/temp, cig lighter, stereo, and other controls are in super shape for a $650 Explorer. I found the 6-disc CD changer intact in the center console WITH the CD cartridge. Rare, right???? Next to that..... original owner's manual with THIS:

IMG_20131005_210416_072.jpg

The original window sticker, could not believe how much this cost in 1996!!!!!

IMG_20131005_210438_158.jpg

Learned more about the options that came with this one than I knew looking at it in person:

IMG_20131005_210525_050.jpg

I trailered it "towards" home for less than 2 miles before it started to "NOT" want to be hauled and instead, (my brother) DROVE IT HOME! It was a challenge and thought we weren't going to make it. Arrived at home safely at 3am this morning, then got up at 7 to go to work (not normally my scheduled day) yuck.

Took some pics of the body panels to list them on Craigslist tonight and hopefully I start stripping this thing down to the bare necessities soon. My goal is to recover the cost with the extra parts as I previously mentioned.

Been enamored by the user manual for whatever reason, guess I'm as happy as a kid on Christmas at this point!

Here's more pics! (hasn't been washed or cleaned yet)

I think the swap looks so cool with the ex dash in it!
It's a wonder it comes out as close as it does.
Can't wait to see yours..cheers!

The Explorer is in my SHOP ready for the CHOP!

I've removed the first couple of parts and then I was called in for Daddy Duty. I did collect 44 cents worth of mostly pennies from the floorboard so far! I'm known by my friends as a Penny-Picker-Upper. It's starting to collect some $!

IMG_20131005_233615_749.jpg

Tonight's Extra Awesome Pic: Too bad the rear of the explorer doesn't open the other way, I could have an awesome table or fold-up work bench...

IMG_35847299322592.jpeg
The rest of the truck must've rusted away!!!

I've been granted "permission to go out and play" with the Explorer tonight, so the plans are to preserve parts I'm keeping to use and remove the parts that I'm SURE I will NOT be using. I'll take some pics and post them most-likely tomorrow.

About that 53 is the floor in it the ex floor or the 53 floor..I'm trying to figure that out..lol.

Good question, I believe they are stacked, I didn't get a chance to look underneath. It appeared to me that the explorer floor was on top of the 53 floor. When I get all the clutter out of the way on mine where I can do some SERIOUS measurements, I will probably find out what happened there. I know there will have to be some fabrication, but it didn't quite make sense, which is why I took the picture at that spot. (still scratching my head)

Are you building a 55? Just wondering because of your username.
