Jah,

For the 5.0L setups I assume the MAC cat back retains the secondary cat converters? Its hard to get gains and sound from the 5.0L leaving those suckers in place IMO

I assure you, You will get alot of sound with the mac system. Single 3" catback.

Sound? I am looking for power more then sound.
If I wanted sound I would just leave the secondary cat converters and run no mufflers

Mandrel bends are nice
3" pipe is too large for us AWD/4x4 guys IMO, it loses too much low end

MAC system is nice, Mandrel bends are nice, but its not the best setup for these trucks

Yes, I want to know about more power and not so much on loud sound. Im looking at the setup like mountianeergreens... anyone know bout the difference in power?

does anybody have a vid or sound clip of there mac bolt on exhaust. im looking to get one so id like to hear what it sounds like

does anybdy have a vid of the mac exhaust?

Patience is a virtue- give it more than 5 minutes between posts.

I don't know of anyone who has the MAC system- most of the guys on here with 5.0's don't have secondary cats, so bolt on systems aren't as prevalent.

mac

I have the mac tk5072. It's got a great sound to me. I have it dumped under the truck rite now because of lazyness. It's kind of a hard install or more of a pain in the asss and, the hangers didn't work or i couldnt get them too.. I'll try and get a sound clip..

that was a accident with the post thing sorry my comp got screwed up...does whats another better bolt on system that loud. i dont have a welder and i rather do it my self so that easier

...3" pipe is too large for us AWD/4x4 guys IMO, it loses too much low end...

I just can't agree with this statement, I've been running the 3" pipe from the muffler for too long with too good a result, for over 8 years now. I free rev to 6K plus without any struggle from the engine, and I still snap heads back off idle. Maybe if I had taller tires I would agree, but my tires are the same diameter as stock.

If you look at the flow numbers for (1) 3" pipe versus (2) 2" pipes, you see that the (2) 2" pipes still slightly outflow the single 3". No one would say that dual 2" pipes are too much for a warmed over GT40 engine. My exhaust guy has been building performance custom exhaust systems for 30 years now, and he suggested the 3" tailpipe with my mods, I just have to trust his experience. I haven't been disappointed with the decision, or for that matter, anything he has suggested so far.

okay well go put a 2.75" pipe where your 3" pipe is and tell me you dont see even more low end torque.

Your breathing mods remove your low end and add high end (for example your ability to continue to make a bit of power up to 6000 rpm) to get some back a 2.75" pipe will HELP

and I would say any dual setup using 2" pipe is too much for our trucks and GT-40 5.0L

I have 3" on my BII
I have 2.75" on my Explorer

I can tell the difference even with the trucks being different weights, running different size tires, different power mods, etc

You will make a bit more low end torque if you restrict your outlet pipe to 2.75
30 years ago they didnt have OBD-II running 4 02 sensors, etc, your exhaust guy being old really doesnt have alot to do with it. I too trust my guy and he did some research for me on what would work great with my setup, he was correct, the 2.75" pipe retained some much needed back pressure.

would 3" pipe kill my performance? Not likely
Is it a night and day difference? not likely
Does it make a difference on the dyno? I am not sure since I have never dyno'ed my truck, but I personally use my Explorer for towing, its 4x4, its over #4500 and I want all the low end I can get BECAUSE all my other power adder mods (naturally aspirated of course) have helped gain me more high end power, so anything I can do to get some of the low end back, I will do

You dont have to believe me, it doesnt matter and like I said its likely not a night and day difference but there is a difference.

Have you tuned your PCM at all? I know the Explorer computer is happy when it has a bit of back pressure, 3" pipe will remove some of that back pressure

there are ALOT of variables here when comparing trucks, power adders, mods, etc I am also above 5200' in elevation basically the entire trucks life, so that doesnt help either but it does allow me to burn 85 octane gas and not notice any difference.....

so to each his own, I am just trying to share what I have learned, agree or not its cool
if you really want to give it a go though why not cut the 3" outlet off and replace it with 2.75" and be honest about the results you feel? If you dont like go back to 3", no biggie right?

Define "optimal". So many people have different tastes in exhaust from looks to sound to flow etc. I've gone with a single out (As much as duals look cool, I'm not convinced you get any performance gains and of course it costs a lot more to get it done). I use a Flo Pro muffler. I noticed a performance gain right away (all I had at the time was an air intake and was waiting for my XC2 flasher to come back to me after being re-burned for my V8). I love the sound. Not too loud at all, but sounds great when you stomp on it. I played around with louder exhaust on my old Sport and learned to hate the noise in the cabin. I've been very impressed with my current setup.

Jon, leave it alone, you are going to replace one of my best friends here, as a nut changing exhaust constantly.

Ditto, a million variables. Every truck is different, plus different goals, and future plans. Cuss me to, for I will make dual tail pipes this year, at least 2.25", maybe 2.5", depending on space around the shocks, brake line etc.(But you know I'm planning for future). Regards,

Well, I went to the exhaust shop and got them to chop off the 40 Series Flowmasters and put on Magnaflow and I am definately much happier with the Magnaflows. They are alittle more quiet at idle but have a much better sound while accelerating. BTW I have true duals with turn downs, no headers yet.

410: Hey, I'm not looking for an argument, I just don't agree on this one point. I have been building Fords since 1973, both carbed and FI. The engine has had a chip in the past, but I have gone back to the stock PCM. (I got tired of buying $$ premium!) My FMS headers give me more backpressure than your Torquemonsters, so that may be the difference. Your headers actually scavenge a bit where I am just getting freer flow than stock. You're right about how I am making power with RPM's, it's a 302 after all. If I were after more bottom end grunt, I'd go Jon's route with the 347.

My exhaust guy is the owner and manager of a performance exhaust shop. He gets customers from a 150+ mile radius because of his experience with both FI and carbed street and track motors. I wouldn't call him old, he still runs an FI big block '63 Falcon at the local drag strips and is consistently a finalist.

Again, not looking for fight, I just don't agree on this specific point. But as it was stated earlier, every truck is different with different goals. For example, I'm not about to put on taller tires, I wouldn't want to give up the cornering ability. But I don't go on extreme off road trails either, nothing worse than Mosquito pass, east to west in summer. I would love to have the time to do a T-case swap, for both the mileage and the low range, but I've got too many irons in the fire right now.

Truce.

By the way, I'm planning a trip to Summit County in early June, you're just off I-70 aren't you? Also, how did the idle air bypass kit work out for you?
