Is it possible to swap out my 4.0 motor for a v8 5.0 from a 96 mountaineer. I found a really clean motor but not sure if I can make it work... all the accessories look identical.

Well, its possible to put about any engine in any car. So yes it will work you may have to re-wire some stuff, but go for it! Some around here are wanting to do a 5.4L swap in to these 3rd gens.

Possible yes, the best choice no. It's not even a legal swap, to meet emissions standards the motor has to be from the same model year or newer. And your not going to just need a motor, you'll need a different transmission, transfer case, and all of the computers and wiring out of a 2nd gen.

The smart swap would be a 4.6 or 5.4

It's been done at least once by gottabigblock, I think there is at least one other one not sure who it is though.

5.0 was never even available in a 3rd Gen, they went to 4.6. For the money to make everything work, your better off getting a 4th gen with the 4.6, and keep your 4.0 mileage;)

Thx for replies
I kinda figured that was too old being a 97... i m just to find a way around having to replace the left cassette timing kit. I'm either leanin towards replacing all the timing chains, guides, and tensioners. All I have left is the torc coverter bolts and the motor is out. I figure the timing kit is close to $500,so by time I figure all the labor, parts, and w/e else my exspenses are. A swap may be sufficient. I also think that the smaller oil ports may be clogged I bought my explorer w/ 25k miles and now its only 95k. I know now the previous owner neglected this vehicle, so now I'm screwed.

So here's the update, I successfully swapped out my 95k mile motor for a 60k motor. The motor I found was only $500 and had to just swap some accessories around. Only issue I'm havin it with the truck now is the tps and a o2 sensor connector. The connector is no biggie, but the tps is from the original motor, so I know it worked before the swap. Would there be an issue with the o2 sensor effecting the tps triggering the failsafe mode? I thought the o2 sensor would only make the truck run rich.

So is the motor you used an older motor? I know my X throws itself into fail safe mode whenever something else from an older X is put in it.

I believe the motor I swaped with is actually from an 02 and mine is a 05... I could of swore that both motors have 03 stickers on em. I've seen that failsafe mode before whenever I was checkin to see if any sensors where out, I just unplug them while its runnin to see if made a difference. I don't ever wanna swap this engine out ever again. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Turned out great tho. Pulled the motor with the hood and radiator still attached.

I would assume it has to do with the sensors. The electronics on these "different" 3rd generations of Xs don't seem to swap....easily. Ford did a few changes to the Explorer in 2004. Quick question, to answer my curiosity; Did you keep the computer throttle, or did you go to a mechanical throttle?

I would have rather of kept the mechanical, but had to put the electronic one back on...

Actually, I used my old existing intake and throttlebody so the sensors shouldn't really have an issue. Here. The only thing I know that is missing is the connector from the wiring harness that plugs into the driver side o2 sensor on the manifold. The dumbest thing happened. The motor and torc converter lined up perfectly, so something had to go wrong. Turns out the bellhousing decided to eat the connector, lol. The part is $30, but still hunting thru some pick n pulls... if I don't find it by the weekend, I'm just gonna order it thru the dealer.

I think you may have a hard time finding O2 sensors because usually state law requires the cats to be removed because they cannot be sold used. So from the headers to the exhaust clamp is usually gone.

Well, its been a little while since the swap. I fixed the connector for the right o2 sensor. Fixed the tps sensor issue somehow. Now I'm thinking I have a bad o2 sensor somewhere. Probably from all the fluids, pbuster, and what ever else got into the exhaust while extracting the motor, is most likely caked on the sensor. Or perhaps, the sensor that came off the newer motor could be bad from sitting so long.
