Hi hope you can please help me? I have a 97 Ford Explorer AWD 5.0 V8. I recently blew out the front axel. When I was driving it felt like I was dragging 1000 lbs behind me. When the axel blew everything freed up and the truck drove awesome. I replaced the front axel completely with a low mileage used one in awesome shape. I took off the cover and it looked great put fresh fluid in it and mounted it. My vehicle again runs like I am dragging 1000 lbs behind it. Could this be a transfer case problem and if so can I rebuild the transfer case? All so I recently bought 2 new front tires and left the rear ones on because they were in great shape but not an exact match to front different manufacture but same size and all. Maybe you have some ideas or can direct me to a rebuild diary for my transfer case.
Thank You
Bill

I dont exactly understand what you mean by the vehicle feeling like its dragging a thousand pounds. Does it just feel sluggish? Maybe it just needs a tune up .. or a new fuel pump / filter / pressure regulator.

Oh and did you ever find out what blew up the old front axle? Did the housing crack or something?

When I say dragging its like the vehicle is over loaded and has no up hill power. I belive the clutches or viscous clutch welded its self together in the Transfer Case. Thus making the front wheel drive over work more than the rear. There is a slight pull to the front right as well. Does any one know about replacing the viscous clutch. Thanks Bill

Even if the transfer case's viscous clutch has welded itself, it will only make the vehicle feel slugish during turns. And if anything, a welded transfer case will make the vehicle run straight, not pull to one side. I think you should look into fuel delivery like filter, pump (which is inside the tank), or pressure regulator.

Just to let everybody know it is a transfer case problem when i diconect the front drive shaft the vehicles runs great. The transfer case powers 65% to rear wheels and 35% to the front. When the clutch plates got welded together it running 50% to front right axel and 50% to left rear axel causing front axle to over work and pull right.

you "might" try to add a bottle of slip lock additive to see if it will release. I question if it will work, but it is a 5.00 shot at it.

time for a new transfer case then

I was going to suggest pulluing the front d shaft to see if the problem is still there

When you replaced your front end I hope you made sure it has the same ring and pinion / gear ratio
