'98 Explorer 4.0L SOHC
Hello, I am new to this forum. I joined to try and get some information to help me with my 98 Explorer. It's the 4.0L SOHC.

I have had the check engine light on for months, code said it was my camshaft position sensor. I didn't have the funds to change it at the time, and this morning my truck wouldn't start at all! I researched and I'm assuming my sensor has completely given out. It was idling pretty rough for the last couple of weeks, and just all of a sudden it won't start. Starter is fine, fuel pump is working, battery is good.

My question is, where is my sensor located, and do I need a special tool to position the new one? I read that other engines (5.0 V8) need the tool!!! I can't buy the manual right now, so I'm having to figure this out myself.

I am 8 months pregnant and have 2 little kids, I have GOT to get this truck running ASAP. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Stacy

It's on the left[driver's side] valve cover, right behind where you add the oil I don't know how much they cost but you may want to have it tested before replacing it, it could be the connection or a short in the wire or ?

You might also be able to just take the little cap off it and clean the inside out to get you going. You will see a rotating metal "flag" in the part remaining in the truck-
inside the cap you removed will be a small gap where this flag passes through. Clean this gap out with a rag.

Your thinking about the OHV, not the SOHC.

which code?

Here are the camshaft position sensor related codes:

P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0342 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Low Input
P0343 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit High Input
P0344 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Do you happen to remember which one you have?

You might try disconnecting and reconnecting the electrical connector two times. It will clean the contacts some.

Thanks everyone, I will have the hubby try all of that before we buy the part. I'm glad I don't need a tool for it!

do a compression test BEFORE you start buying anything and good luck.
