'99 ohv 4.0 cam build

I once test drove a '93 super coupe, it had a borla cat-back on it and it was the best sounding v6 I've ever heard. I just ordered the Borla 40664. Its 2.25" in and 2.25" out. They do not offer larger outlet diameters on that class of muffler. But since I wont be running any cats at all, along with the exhaust dumping three feet after the muffller, flow should not be a problem. Im curious as to whether I will need bungs welded in the exhaust for o2 sensors or if I just need the two in the y-pipe? With no cats I would assume the ones farther along the exhaust piping would be redundant.

wow $180-$200 for a muffler. ouch. I can hardly wait to get your reviews on it.

I would think you need to replace any 02 sensors you pull out. If you don't, without some computer work, codes will get thrown and performance/gas mileage will suffer.

yea I wasnt exactly very enthusiastic about dropping that much on a muffler, but I had it set in my heart to have a quiet Borla. Its on back order and wont be shipped until 4/2. But I will gladly post a video of the exhaust when its finished. Hopefully the o2 sensors are not in too bad a shape. Do you know of a good tune that will take care of o2 sensor deletes and account for the cam and head work? I was curious if the local Ford dealership could maybe tune it for me.

im not sure. but what ive found searching online is that some people say you can slightly modify a set of the older 200ci roller rockers and they work on the 4.0l ohv..
im not quite sure though...
you might want to look into it
max

that is very interesting, I found a few threads on it but no one seems to give in detail how it worked for them. Lol my new rockers just came in the mail anyway

The best tune possible would be if you added a wideband o2, and used an sct for logging to send to one of the SCT tuners. This way, the guy doing the tune can see exactly whats happening with your motor.
I'll be doing this once my blower gets installed. Henson Performance has been pretty good to me so far. Maybe open up some dialogue with James Henson and get advice from him on the best route to go before you spend any money on tuning.

The wideband o2 definitely adds another expense though.
Things quickly add up. Price in a SCT box, and wideband o2 to what you are already spending....Ugh.

Ive read about the 200ci rockers also, but a respected machinist that makes our 4.0 ohv's go fast says they wont work. I trust him on that. Too bad. Like everyone else modding their ohv's, we'd love to see something with a higher ratio that worked.

wow I was not looking to get that involved with a tune, at the end of the day I paid 1400 for my explorer and Im keeping that in mind during the build. Im using this vehicle to learn and gain knowledge of what does and does not work for the money in engine building. Im super excited to begin work on it :D Your supercharger build looks pretty cool, Im very curious to see what kind of numbers it will put down.

Im having trouble figuring out if my '99 sport has a 180 of 195 thermostat in it. Last summer it would get pretty darn warm and I was wondering if mine already had the 180 thermostat, if not I might put one in when I change the cam.

Me 2!
Like you (And the rest of us) costs add up in a hurry. We are all learning, thats for sure. My $75.00 blower is going to be a $2000.00 experience, and more. Just ask JD what he has spent so far (Wait, don't....he will get depressed).

It is a hobby also, and not all about the vehicle. I can justify anything. hahaha.

You could just install all your parts, and wait on the tune. You would have to re-install the o2 sensor your thinking of pulling out though.

I had a tune done by James, and he will give you a basic tune based on the mods you have without any logging (No wideband o2 required). This gave me more mid range power for sure, and a tighter transmission gear shift.
James may say that untill you start changing stuff like the mass air flow sensor, you don't need the wideband sensor. Im not sure.

Its cheap insurance, and apart anyway. I run a 180, and changed it when I did all my motor work.

ok great I have a 5 speed so Im not concerned about shift firmness, but I will contact him for a base tune as Im determined to blow the doors off my friends '04 chick stang. And a 180 is cheap enough to buy. Would a larger maf be necessary? I am going to do the halfshaft mod on the tb btw

You know what is sad, that price is about normal for just a muffler install around here (florida). I spent the money and went with a gibson stainless. Love the sound, but you figure its $400 exhaust solution. So as Dono says, when OHV builds start its usually a case of the leaky wallet.

I think, and I mean 'think', you wont gain a thing from a maf upgrade until you start pushing some serious air thru. Definitely do the half shaft mod though. Its one of the very few free things you can do.

I bet if you get James to do the full data logging tune with a wideband o2 and sct, he would be able to tell you immediately if you are maxing out your maf.

Sorry to rub the salt in the wound JD.

Haha Ive read a lot on JD's build, very impressive. I also am installing a new Zoom clutch ($280 without throwout bearing), as my sister fried mine trying to learn how to drive a stick lol

Welcome to the modding club my friend. Keep your wallet handy. Its a disease.

You are correct dono, without something like a kkm or fipk from k&n a MAF upgrade is almost useless (read: it may even cause lean'ness in air/fuel). Which to be honest, even with a tune, fipk, and that MAF I sold dono. I saw very minimal increase (better sound and throttle response) though I also installed a bbk 66mm tb. Once I did my charger install and pulled the stock plugs (after a year) they were white and you could tell the motor was leaning out at WOT. I also recommend if your staying n/a pick up a underdrive pulley. It was literally the best money I spent.

speaking of the maf, since Ive gone another route. I have it sitting here doing nothing.
If you want it QueenCitySleeper, let me know, and make me an offer(this would probably be the least expensive part you would ever buy for your truck :shifty_ey ) If your going to go with a tune using a wideband 02, this would be a great thing for you.

Phix, What was the details of this maf again? I can't even remember.

Ive always been skeptical about the underdrive pulley, wont my water pump and alternator run slower? Are the power gains worth it in your opinion? And can anyone tell me more about tuning, so preferably I would want the wideband o2, and I need a SCT Tuner? The tuners are kinda pricey and from what I understand they are only good on a single vehicle.
