Black globe, Vacuum reservoir on v-6???

every gen II Ex I have seen has a vacuum canister mounted below the airbox (below the sheetmetal, in front of the tire)

If you have a heat in your truck you have this "globe"

Aldive I dont think U are looking in the correct spot.
Unless your truck was ever wrecked or the previous owner deleted the globe it should be there, regardless of what engine you have, tranmission, AC or not, this thing holds vacuum and has a check valve built into it, it feeds the heater control valve and your HVAC system dash vacuum operated devices.

It is mearly a resevoir and likely the systems will finction without it (if you were to bypass it) but only when the truck is running.

this shows you EXACTLY where the sumbitch is mounted

Heck, even my friends 85 mustang has one of those. lol It only had one line going to it though.

To start, no pictures as I don't have the truck anymore.

I had a 2001 Ford Ranger, 2WD, Fully Loaded (Edge) with a 4.0 SOHC and Auto Transmission. I know for a fact that I had one. Where exactly it was located escapes me because I had 2 nearly similar trucks in 2 years.

On mine, it was hooked directly into the Cruise Control unit. It was on the Passenger Side, above the fender, hidden under some plastic covers. I remember also seeing it on my 2000 3.0, 5-Speed without cruise control. In this one, it was on the Drivers side, down under the battery tray, mixed in with a bunch of A/C stuff.

Not sure if that helps as they were both Rangers, but I have yet to have a Ford in the last 8 - 10 years that didn't have one. It is possible yours was removed or bypassed at some point though, or that they had some that somehow came off the line without them.

As others have said, all it appears to do is store excess vacuum. If you pull the lines off of it, you get some decompression and then the engine runs just like if you pull the brake booster line. I don't know if it does more than that, but that's what I've experience with it in the past.

*bump*
does anyone know the part number for the vacuum reservoir (black globe thing).
i cant seem to find it on rockauto.com or trademotion.com (fast parts network).
or, does anyone know where i can buy a replacement.
i was in and accident that damaged the front passenger side and knocked the vacuum reservoir loose. it must have been sitting on an exhaust pipe because its melted pretty bad... now my heat is stuck on defrost.

Where do my hoses go?

I have 1997 Explorer XLT 4X4 V6(not SOHC) with the black globe. My problem is the lines coming off "blew off" it and have no where to go. Now the is a loud noise(maybe a vacuum line pulling air in or blowing off) when the truck is at highway speed and the engine rpms drop below 2000, like would happen coasting down a hill. The 2 lines that most people on here, I think, are talking about don't goto the globe. The first pic shows the lines coming out of the firewall and heading to the top of the engine. The second pic shows the same lines ending at their respective places. So where do the 2 lines from my globe go. 4X4? Evaporator? I cannot find anyplace under the hood where there is 2 lines hanging or where 2 lines should be connected. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Todd

My 96 Sport 2 wheel drivw 4.0 v6 pushrod engine :eek:has one low in the wheel well almost hidden from sight you have to look for it to find it.

Which wheel well? And one what? Hose? you mean?

Great thread. VERY helpful. Installed new front fenders and had to move the globe around, ended up melting my vacuum lines. Didn't know what the deal with the 3 vacuum lines was... As JT stated previously, the grey line is unneeded. Spliced the main two lines back together with some 1/8 tubing and MEK paint thinner.

Thank you all for the help and pictures! Man I love these forums.

I'll have to do more research on the "heater bypass valve" as that vacuum line has has been dangling for awhile- see if it's worth tucking away or whatnot.

Hi, guys! When changed spark plugs, i has found a vacuum hose (picture). I can not find a place where it is engaged.

could you help me with it?
maybe somebody has a vacuum scheme?

That grey line should be the heater bypass line if I'm not mistaken. If you check under the truck just below the alternator you should see something similar to what "jlppimb" posted in his last pic., a metal cap with a metal vacuum nipple on it... that grey line should hook up to that.

Found this while tearing into the SOHC engine today.

It appears to be vacuum operated valve attached to one end of the fuel rail and connected to this mysterious black globe. Does this regulate fuel pressure?

Okay thanks - so the FPR system is purely mechanical (vacuum), not electronic?

Yessir. You can get an adjustable, vacuum reference regulator also, should you choose.

Okay thanks much!

Having the same type issue...

My defrost is the only vent that blows, other than the back seat vents. I have found the ball and the two lines that come off of it, one line is connected to the brakes and the second line is dangling with the connector still on it with no reachable connection. Anyone know where the hose the does not connect to the brakes from the globe is supposed to connect? Can this cause a rough idle when sitting at idle speed in gear? If I remove the MAF and start the motor it idles smooth as silk, but I am not sure if this is a sign of a bad MAF or if it related to the vacuum line hanging from the globe?

Thanks,
RT
