Fuel pump issue???

Ok here is the dual air filter setup I used to run. It was plumbed directly to the MAF.
Yes, I know all the foglights are out of place-don't know what I was thinking:confused:

I'd say a faulty fuel pump, or maybe a wiring problem to the fuel pump. Either that or there's crap in the tank that is getting sucked against the pump inlet and killing fuel flow. When the pump turns off, the suction that is pulling junk against the inlet is released, letting the debris fall off....

Hate to say it, but it might be worth pulling the tank to see what condition everything is in....

Do you think I would see evidence of this on the sock???

Do you think I would see evidence of this on the sock???

You might. Depends upon the type of debris. If it's clogging up the sock enough to starve the motor, it should be evident pretty quickly.

We had all sorts of problems like this with our '66 Mustang before we restored it. Ran great for a while, and then just ran like sh*t or died out sometimes. Turned out the tank was full of gunk and was choking off the fuel supply at the fuel inlet.

Here is my take on this. First thing I would do is change the fuel filter. If you are lean when the problem is occurring then that tells me you have a fuel delivery problem! Of course this is a no brainer and has previously been mentioned on this thread. The second thing I would do is try to get a fuel pressure guage on the fuel rail and reproduce the problem. If the problem is a fuel pressure dropping below the factory minumum I would then look towards eliminating the problems. First disconnect the regulator and see if the fuel pressure is raised if so then I would try to reproduce the problem with the regulator disconnected. If it doesn't rear its head then you have a bad regulator but remember with the vac line off the reg and plugged the fuel pressure should only be fluctuating barely, when I say barely it should hover around Ford's max fuel pressure setting range(40-50 psi), I would suspect anywhere to actually be 45psi,but nontheless). If you see anymore fluctuation than 5psi with the vac hose off the reg then I would start to suspect a bad regulator. If you see a dramatic drop in fuel pressure and the truck starts leaning out again with the vac hose off the reg and then you definately have a bad pump. To eliminate or incriminate the pump whatever the problem is then I would backprobe the fuel pump wiring under the driver side and make sure you don't drop off a bunch of voltage while the truck is stumbling. If the voltage is consistant and looks good then you can safely say the fuel pump relay and the associated wiring are good and the only cause for this problem would be the pump or sock.

Now this leads me to my second evaluation and clarification once again on fuel pumps. Rocket has also covered this as well. Anyone who has read/followed my turbo installation knows the problem that I have had with the fuel pump. Don't use the Focus pump or any other type of pwm pumps in any of the Ex's (1991-2001) model years they will just give you constant headache's and you will ask yourself whether or not if you will ever have success, believe me I have plenty of experience with this as well as with my customers. The fuel pump basket in the your Explorer is able to accept a pump designed for the Mustang GT (1987-1998). The only thing you will have to modify is the connector. Don't cut the wires!!!!! Remove the wires from your connector and install them in the connector for the WALBRO pump connector, noting the polarity. It will work I do it all the time. Now onto the BBK pump, Walbro makes pumps for just about everyone usually these guys spec them out how they want them and Walbro will manufacture them, so just because you have a XXXX manufacturer and the pump says Walbro the pump may have something spec'ed diffently than a "Walbro" original. Now I would highly recommend a Holley pump. Holley has an excellent reputation and I am running thier 255LPH(forced induction pump, like 20psi higher than a standard 255LPH). Now the pump is manufactured by Walbro but I am sure Holley won't put up with any crappy products. I have had a huge success with thier pumps on my personal cars/trucks and customers cars and haven't had one comeback. They are a little pricier but not by much(I think about/around $25 more than the competitors) but this is small insurance when you have a built or blown motor(especially a blown or nitrous motor). I know everyone is looking for a deal but I look at the long run. I have 35K miles on my pump and I have customers with the same if not more so these Holley's have stood the test of time. A couple of dollars up front will save alot on the backside. :burnout:

BTW- All Mustangs(87-98) come with the 88lph fuel pumps. I don't have any solid facts on this but I would not suspect the Explorer to carry a 190LPH pump stock. I believe the 1996-98 Mustang Cobras had a 155LPH stock.
Here is a link to Holley pumps http://store.summitracing.com/egnse...697+4294908331&autoview=sku&Ntk=KeywordSearch

My personal pump is a HLY-12-915 (Forced induction 255LPH) 110PSI vs 90psi, which I would not recommend for a N/A'd vehicle. JT for your truck I would recommend the HLY-12-902!

Id only buy gas in small quantities until you figure things out. It'll be much easier to drop the tank that way.

I would pull the tank first and check things out it wouldn't cost anything but time. I would also go ahead and change the fuel filter, its cheap to replace.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

I should point this out, thanks for bringing it up.
My fuel system is relatively new ( 3 yrs)---Aeromotive adjustable regulator (boost reference) ,Aeromotive 5/8" rails and lines 42lb injectors. I have a fuel pressure guage permanently mounted to the regulator. Fuel pressure is at 48 psi static, goes to about 45 with vacuum line attatched. Remember, my fuel system is a return type. I have a 5/8 (AN 10) line feeding each rail, and a 3/8 (AN8) return off each rail to the FPR. Everything there is good. This problem just started. Fuel filter has less than 10k miles, however I am switching it also.

HOLY ****BALLZ BATMAN!!! You have dual -10AN feeding your rails!!! Talk about overkill! Hell I am running dual -8 AN steel braided hose to feed my rails and know it will support over 1,000 horsepower! hehe. I guess there is nothing like building for the future. ;) I take it your running -10AN from the tank and then splitting it with a Y fuel block and continuing with -10AN from there?

Also stick with a 255 lph fuel pump. As long as they come from a decent manufacturer they will be quite reliable. BTW if you want a second option for the 255 lph fuel pump that actual Walbro 255 lph EFI fuel pump is Walbro #GSS342... Good luck man and start out simple with the diagnosis and then if you have to work up bigger from there then go ahead and do so.

Is there a reeason that an external pump can't be used?

When it comes time to rebuild my engine I would like to use an extrnal pump in place of the BS factory, stick in the tank to make it a pain in the ass to replace because engineers don't give a **** about accessabilty for mecahnaics or us that wrench on our vehicles!

it takes me 15-20 minutes to drop the explorer fuel tank, not a big deal as long as you have 1/4 tank of fuel or less, even more is okay, it just makes it bit harder to put the tank back in.

If it was external it would have saved me a bunch of money 2-1/2 years ago when mine left me stranded in Des Moines IA at my father in-laws condo.

He owned a couple of screw drivers, a pair of pliers and a hammer. No racthet/socket set or wrenches & no place to work on it.

Total with tow bill was damn near $800:fire:

Ouch!

I almost lost a wheel on the boat trailer last year during a very heavy rain storm. 2 hours from home the wheel bearings welded themselves to the spindle, I was 1/4 mile from getting on the highway when somebody pulled up next to me and told me about the problem, in that rain I could hardly see the boat let alone the wheel.

So an hour later the tow truck gets there (sun evening) and we load her up on the flatbed, 2 hour tow to home was $350 + $20 tip. Well the spindle is welded to the axle so I took the entire axle out and to a trailer specialist. Bottom line was $20 in wheel bearings ended up costing me $1200 for the tow and a complete new axle for the trailer :)

Sometimes a 15 minute job is a $1200 disaster when you dont catch it in time or have the right tools. You better believe my boat now has the most lubed and cleaned wheel bearings in the world = mr ****.

Hell, I'd be trading that boat for a snowmobille:D

Your still driving it arent you? Hahaha drop the tank and have a look see first before you throw parts at it.

I parked it last Sunday and haven't started it since. Wife is on a vacation from work, and we are spending time together.
I cannot get sent to the garage, no matter how hard I try---

Try peeing on her leg while in the shower... Works for me! ;)
