MrQ's Red Flyer

Sorry to hear that amigo. BTW, check your transmission fluid to see if the oil made it in there.

I don't know if I can get the ram to jump... it's a little nose heavy. Though I am pretty sure I'll do another crazy stunt that will make its way on here. ;)

Armadillo, oh there is atf all right. No engine oil in it, but it smells somethin' awful! Granted, I figure part of that problem is due to the cheap Walmart Special ATF I put in there.

Ya I just mentioned it because once upon a time my sis owned a 94'. She was loosing motor oil but gaining transmission fluid. We discovered she had a leak that caused the oil to transfer into the transmission.

Bumpin' this for an update.

Gonna pick up a torque converter from Russell in OK on Friday in a last ditch attempt to fix the Red Flyer. Hope this works because I am pushing the envelope on my parents patience on this one. Fingers crossed.

Hey, anything I can do! And you're welcome to any parts I have here :D

Just nothing from Blue :p:

I was just checking to see what Russell did to your thread seeing as how you butterfied Shady.:D

He knows I am funnin' with him. Russell is a great guy and he takes a lot of ribbing on and off the show from me. Fortunately he is a good sport...

...I hope.

Bumpity-bump.

Popped the battery back in from the dodge to bring Red's engine back to life. After I fixed a vacuum hose issue she started up and idled like a dream. Damn, I need to pull that tranny.

Tranny is being pulled. Got a line on a M5OD 4x4 and hopefully will have it by Sunday. Its nice to be workin' on Red again.

Thanks man, but the Ram is sticking around. It makes a great parts getter/tow rig. I couldn't be working on Red if I didn't have it.

I got the trans pulled last night. Man, that fluid was awful. I also found that some of the torque converter bolts were loose, either my doing or the tranny's. In any case, I believe the looseness caused the torque converter to ride the input shaft improperly and destroyed the pump gears. But enough about autos, on to the 5 speed.

I still need to pull the flex plate, replace the freeze plugs, pull the tranny cooler and lines, remove the gear shifter and the cable, remove the driver's seat to get under the dash to pull the pedals, cap off the vacuum modulator hose, disconnect the auto wiring harness, pull the transfer case off the tranny, and find a flywheel.

Well, there is more to it than that, but this is pretty much what is rolling around in my head right now, since I am going to be picking up the tranny on Sunday from Kris.

I hate vaccum lines.

Is it done yet??

How about now??

Now??

Cmon man, get it running!! I need to make more fun of the dodge!!!

:p:

Well, all the pertinent parts are out and I have a large scrap pile to to get rid of. I ran into some trouble getting a cover plate bolt off for the master cylinder, but with the help of Mr. Air Chisel I managed to salvage the day.

I am really looking forward to getting that transmission today.

Russell, will you please stop putting the Ram down. It has been the salvation of this build and don't you forget it. :nono:

LOL dan, you know I am joshing yea :D Besides, the forum doesnt know how many times you had fun with Blue off air on the podcast...I can quote a Flamethower reference if you like :D

In all seriousness though, I am really happy for you for getting this tranny problem taken care of, I cant wait to see Red up and going again!!

Blue is my foil and the Ram, yours. We'll leave **Shade** out of this...for now. :D

I'm heading out now. My younger brother decided to tag along, so this could get interesting.

There fixed that little 'Error' for yea :)

Thanks to Kris I got the tranny how with some extra parts. As a disclaimer he gave me the tranny gratis telling me he had no idea what the internals looked like.

Anyway, I opened up the shift cover today and found this:

Apparently the guy before me (not Kris) utterly destroyed third gear. I guess I have another rebuild project on my hands.

well, at least this one should be a little easier.

I'm glad you stuck with it, as much as I would have liked to have bought yours, It's best it didn't work out. I found a 92 on CL that "has a bad transmission" for 500. I've been driving it for a week, it has a very delayed engagement into drive (stupid automatic, ford shorted me a pedal on this one) but once it gets there, pulls great. And it's 4wd with 3.73 LS

After pulling apart that transmission, I have found that this one is not salvageable. The input shaft has welded itself into the output shaft, so even if I can get them apart I would still need a ton of new parts. :(

Therefore, I am passing this rebuild up. I will, however, try to get the output shaft out of there, so if I run across a 2wd M5OD I can put the 4wd shaft in without too much fuss and widen my search.

Anyways, what M5OD's can I use? There's those in the rangers behind the 2.3 and the 3.0 and the ones out of a Bronco II. Will they hold the 4.0?
