Dang Dan!! Have u ever seen HEE HAW!!! The song "If it weren't for bad luck I would have no luck at all" would make you a great theme song.

This isn't your first obstacle with Red, you'll make it!!!! :salute:

How would the two shafts be welded together? Do you mean that a gear on both shafts are stuck together? I can't imagine any two parts fusing together like that.

No the input shaft slips over the output shaft with a bearing between the two. If the bearing loses fluid it starts to bury itself into the two shafts as it disintegrates making it almost impossible to get apart.

Well, good luck to you. I'm sure you'll make it turn out good one way or another.

that sucks. I'll look next time i'm at the yard, they occasionaly have a M5OD 4x4 in there, maybe I can find something for you. Can always ship greyhound, or UPS since it would fit in their max box size.

I'm actually in the middle of a auto to manual swap now, kinda funny how we're doing it at the same time.

Russell (Nice59) and I were talking the other night and he suggested that since the manual tranny is shot that I try and piece together a working auto from the the 3 A4LD's I have hanging around the house.

I hate going back and forth on Red, but I want to get it running. Fortunately I didn't hack the transmission lines out of there like I thought I would so I can put everything back together. I jumped the gun and made a whole lot of extra work for myself...AGAIN.

When will I ever learn?

Since the manual is a bust and money is very tight, I have to look back at the autos I have hanging around the house in an effort to get my explorer running again.

I decided to first try the transmission that I just took out. I have suspected for a while that the pump was the problem. So, I stood it up and popped off the bell housing to get a look at it. Unfortunately, they apparently used red Locktite on the Allen head bolts and for the life of me I couldn't get them off, so I resorted to the tried and true method of determining pump failure by examining the torque converter snout.

CAUTION these are not pretty:

As you can see by the scorch marks and the large amount grooving that something went terribly wrong with the pump. Fortunately a little sandpaper will freshen up the snout and I can reuse it.

Now onto the pump. I already had my first rebuilt transmission taken apart for scrap and since I know that pump was good along with the fact that I had replaced the seals on it, I feel confident in using it. I also torqued the bands to test for breakage (there was none) and checked the OD band material. (there is still a lot left). I think I will be able to reuse this tranny in Red. No manual for now, but at least I know I can do it. :)

Woo Hoo Dan! Glad to hear it may not be a complete pain to fix the flyer! That TC looks bad though, eeck!

A lot of it depends on how this works out and if I have a job by that time. If the tranny works, I still have a lot of maintenance issues to take care of, not to mention the registration and the inspection are out.

I really would like to go to SMORR and I also want to do the local Texas run. Between the two the Texas one is more feasible as it will only be two hours out there rather than ten.

I really need to get a 4x4 toy. The only runs I can do is on pavement. Good to see your truck is getting better.

Getting more work done. Slowly, but surely. Replaced the modulator on the A4LD, the pan gasket and the filter. I had one surprise though in the pan. There wasn't a magnet catching all the metal shavings. Can't understand that one.

Anyways, after puking out the rest of its nasty fluid on my dad's garage floor, the tranny is ready to go into the truck. Now I just have to get the truck ready for the tranny. I still need to get freeze plugs and replace the rear main seal, reinstall the flexplate, reattach the vacuum line for the modulator and put the tranny cooler back on. Interior wise I need to reinstall the gear shifter, the pedal assembly the knee bolster plate and cover, and the front seat.

Thats a lot of work. Good luck. I don't know how freeze plugs come out. Guess you just have to hammer, punch, pull and twist. Don't forget to bring the coolant level in the engine down first or you'll get a surprise when the plugs come out!

Take your time with installing the new rear main seal, its got to be pressed on straight and true. And I think you may not want to skimp on rear main seal quality$$. I've read reports of people installing new rear main seals in OHVs and they start leaking just days after, only to do it a second and third time until a different brand is used.

Actually it sounds like more work than it is. I am just dreading putting the tranny back in. Anyways, I am heading back out to see if I can knock some more of this stuff off the list.

EDIT: Okay that takes care of the flexplate, tranny cooler, front grill, and vacuum hose. At the same time while I had the grill off I put on the clear turn signals I got from Anime a year ago, so yeah I'm still modding. :D

Is it done yet Dan? C'mon, you had all of yesterday to make the truck completely drivable again from its current status :p:

Seriously, glad you're making more progress than me at this point. All I did yesterday was rake leaves
