Hey guys I’m about to start ordering stuff for my 99 ex 4.0 ohv 5 speed manual.I think I’m going to go with 4.56s and I have 33s.I’m new to the whole re gearing stuff just wondering if I can just order two of the exact same gears (ring and pinion) one for the front and one for the back or does one have to be like “reverse thread” for the front and what’s the minimum I can buy to this sway without breaking the bank.could I get away with just buying the ring and pinions and new crush washers and re use only bearings? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

I think what I was trying to ask for better understanding is on my 99 ex 4x4 does it have reverse rotation or standard up front.

Reverse rotation.

For all this trouble I would not reuse any seals bearings, but up to you. Imagine if you got a pinion leak afterwards?

I have 4.10s now, I don't know about the manual but it revs 2000 at 60Mph. I guess the stock 16" tires would be about 30s?

No!!!!!

The sla ifs suspension on the 95-01 explorer
The front diff is low pinion the gears are regular rotation
Dana 35 regular rotation

(The old ttb use reverse rotation Dana 35 gears because they are high pinion)

You need to purchase ring and pinion sets for the front and rear axles as well as master install kits
Then you will need new axle seals for the front diff and two new ones for the rear axle as well

I just/ paid shop to re geared a 2007 ranger with Yukon 4.56 and Yukon install kits

Me too! How I ended up w an extra set of 4.55 Yukon gears for a ttb

It goes back to the old days when the first 95 trucks came out it went around here on ef that they are still reverse rotation all theee years I thought the same so I ordered gear sets…..
Wrong!!

Thanks to everyone who chimed in I would order the whole new instal kit but just did a over hall on the rear end about two months ago so everything is pretty much brand new I’ll have the rear end done this Sunday coming up and take the front drive shaft out till I get the front set of gears.does anyone know if you can still go over 100 mph with 4.56 gears and 33s asking for a freind🤣

This thread pushed me to hunt around for gears for a future project. I discovered the front D35 gears are standard rotation, and many apllications listed are Jeep Wranglers and various other Dodge vehicles. I knew they had rear D35's but now I see that a bunch of them did. It's easier to look those up than the front Explorers. Rock Auto lists more choices for the Jeeps, than the same D35 gears of the Explorer.

4.56 and 33’s you will like
My wife’s FJ has 4.56 and 35’s I can tell you her average speed is about 70 lol
Our rigs are all lifted on big tires, over 75-80 there is no need to push it 100 is for cars or small tires imho

That’s true just wanted to know in case I ever needed to😀 would anyone happen to know if I need a clamping or magnetic base for the dial indicator?

I used magnetic

I used magnetic
Hey guys I had a question it might sound dumb because I don’t know much about gearing and I hope I dident just buy the wrong part I got my ring and pinion gears today and they said d35 4.56 as I’m reading about my rear end it said that it’s a 8.8 rear end does that mean the gear won’t work in there? or are will it still fit? Or is the gears I ordered for the front? I’m so confused with this whole gearing thing.

The rear gears are 8.8. Not interchangeable with the gears for the D35.

You’ll need to regear BOTH axles, anyways….

So the d35 gear that I got is for the front axle? And how do the gears work if the front ring gear is smaller than the rear being the back is 8.8?

@Ruben9237 The front axle is a Dana 35. The rear axle is a Ford 8.8. Both are standard rotation. I didn't check your specs (I'm on a phone), but if you have the 4.10s from the factory, the 4.56's will not make much of a difference. Bang for buck, I went with USA Standard Gear/Yukon (both branches of Yukon), as they were the best rated I could find as well as the only that offered 5.13's.

Listen to @410Fortune and @Mbrooks420, they've been around this block. Regear front and rear together unless you want to be parked forever, and do the master install kit or pay for the whole thing twice.

I'm still sitting on a set of 5.13's front and rear; the 4.10's from the factory were awesome for the 30's but it doesn't like 4th gear with these fat 33x12.5's. Automatic or manual transmission makes a difference in power delivery, and I don't go fast any way.

Also depends on whether you daily your rig or if it's a toy... But that's a separate discussion. Basically, mod how you like, follow your heart, and what we learn by breaking stuff, nobody could have taught us any other way.

Hope to see what you ultimately decide to do! These Ex's are great little trucks!

I would sugg a full rebuild due to the fact if done correctly you won't need to go back in except for oil services.
Question, what have you done to fit 33 inch tires?
