Since it is such a hot topic, I took a company up on its offer to send me a tablet head unit to try out. Here is my experience and review.

Pretty thorough! Are you considering re-wiring your console's cupholder LEDs to see if that head unit actually controls that function? I'd also be interested to find out if it really controls HVAC seats like the factory controls did.

I've used a USB adapter like this (but with internal sensors) to add TPMS to a cheaper tablet in my '98 Taurus. It came with a thumb drive that activated the "factory setting". But it took so much effort to get the pressures on that screen that I went to a standalone display.
My PIU already has TPMS, but it's also a PITA to view.

Yeah this headunit looks almost the same as mine

yeah maybe like an app or something. I've done some research and there is probably a cable that connects to the leds in the console cup holders since I see a lighting color control menu in my chinesium headunit.

The functionality is already built into the head unit because his video shows the option to choose the color. It's controlled by the HVAC module (via one of the networks), but in his previous video about wiring the cupholder lights, he just hard-wired them to stay blue. With this, he might be able to wire them like factory, and then control them with that menu.

I plan to try with my console swap, but I don't have anything to control them yet.

It is possible, sort of. I have done the interior lights and HVAC seats in my F150 which is wired the same as the Explorers. Basically the lights are possible on the 2011-2017 consoles. After 2017 they switch to a 3-wire LIN bus system which communicates via LIN wires instead of the RGB style light modules. This requires signals to trigger from the BCM which may not be capable on a PIU BCM. It was not the case for base model F-150 BCM's and the BCM could not be swapped out for a higher trim package even after reprogramming. They are just wired different.

As far as HVAC seats it should work just fine. The wiring is pretty simple assuming the PIU has the internal circuitry. Once again sometimes low trim BCM's lack the capability even with being programmed in Forescan. I currently have base model explorer seats in that PIU so I won't be messing with it, but maybe if I find nicer seats in the future.

The Ambient lights in this PIU happen to be the aftermarket ones that I make myself and are only available in ice blue, so I won't be messing with that anyway. In my 2017 it has the OEM lights which have been hardwired for one color only. All this to say I won't be messing with the ambient lighting.

The '15 Ltd. donor of my seats uses the Sync module/APIM to translate the seat switch signals from the ICAN network onto the MSCAN that the DCSM uses. The BCM wasn't really involved with the seats' temperature. But it had the Sony FCIM, so I'm not sure if my '16's Sync1 module can do that translation. So I've been trying to figure out a way to control them more directly. I've read a little about an Arduino solution, but it's more complex than I'm comfortable with myself. If this head unit has multi-network compatibility (to work with such a wide range of years), then I wonder if it can connect directly to MSCAN and control the seats without any other modules.

Can you post all the head unit's pinout diagrams, either from the paper "manual", or the on-screen documentation, or a link to the online manual?
