sn0border88's SAS Thread

It looks about perfect to me. We set the shackle to vertical at full droop and when the weight goes on it the shackles come out to that angle, Spas's were done the same way.

It looks like your springs are way to soft. They shouldnt be flat like that at ride height. When you flex they go negative and they wont last long doing that. That is most likely why you are getting alot of wrap is that your springs are way to soft. Id go to a slightly stiffer spring with more arch and less shackle.

I think Ill try adding a second main leaf. The second set of waggy springs I got had 2 non factory leavs in them, and I removed them before replacing my bent one. I think ill add in another and flex it out and see how things do.

Dude, my shackles have a nice 45* angle at ride height.. nothing like yours

I agree, with the leaf springs almost flat, that would mean the shackle isnt going to rotate forward much further (leaf spring is longest when its flat). So the angle should be more than the one in this pic:

Did you and Spas use the same springs??

I dunno, the angle looks pretty good to me. I think it could use a little more, but i think the main thing is the soft flat leaves with the extra long shackles plus the shackles in the front. Its a little bit of everything all working together to do one bad thing, know whatta mean? :D

I think if you stiffen up the leaf pack to get more arc and maybe trim down the shackle length a little you will solve the problem.

Not sure if this has been asked yet, but Why not do a Shackle reversal? It will solve your shackle going inverted problem, it will ride better, and you won't hang up on your shackles in front.

It may solve the inversion problem, but it creates many more. My shock mounts, limit strap mounts and bumpstops will all also have to be moved which is alot of work I dont feel like doing again. And those shocks arnt coming off easy. I dont care about ride quality since its trail only and I think it rode quite well when I had it out. Basically its either change the leaf pac and add a wrap bar, or do another SAS.

james, your right. But a stiffer leaf also makes me sit higher and im already taller than id like to be. I think I may just add a wrap bar and shackle stops and see what happens.

Ok, definatly done my share of reading on this.

Its been done alot but mainly on the rear axle, I dont think I can find any of the front. Im just gonna think outloud here so someone correct me if im wrong.

Ill keep the shackle for the bar short (im thinking 4") because it dosent need alot of room and I dont want to be dragging it on everything. It can be short because my front shackles are long. As the axle compresses it moves foreward about 6" or so, traveling with the arc of the (front) shackles. So if the (wrap bar) shackle is built with a rearward angle at ride height it will allow the bar to move foreward with the axle as it compresses. But, when the axle droops it moves a little rearward. The shackles never go past straight vertical (or at least I dont want them to) so a short shackle allows some movement but it stops it at a certain point. (IE: right before catastrophic shackle/leaf spring faiure.) :D

I guess ill just use flex joints on the ends evo's would be ideal but they wont be seeing that much use as I dont get to wheel this often.

I honestly think ur over thinking this...take a step back and look at it as a whole....its a simple anti wrap bar....its only got to be 25-30 inches with a 3-5 inch shackle...

It is more than that, wrap is only part of the problem. This link has to also be able to move with the axle in order to allow it to flex but it has to stop that motion at the right point to correct my biggest problem which is the axle pushing back. An anti wrap bar would be much easier, but this isnt an anti wrap bar. Ive got it figured out now I just need to get off my lazy ass and make it.

Micah, here is what I could come up with. Pretty tough with the lights like that.

cut your shackle length in half and add some more arch to the spring, you will be at the same height and wont have to make a wrap bar.

that will make the shackle angle worse....my$.02
