supercharged 5.0 true fire 98 explorer sport

hi everyone, my name is tim . i live in selkirk, manitoba, canada and as if this date that i am posting this, i am 36 years old.

i bought my sport in jan 05 from a local ford dealer. it had 111,000KM's on it. this is the second sport i have owned. it was sitting on the lot for about 8 months before i came along. i am the third owner (i was able to track down the person that traded it in, and they got it from a friend, who bought it new in 98).

i started to do a few things to it after i first got it, then i found this site, and all hell broke lose! i've never been satisfied with something the everyone else has, so i started to tinker with it even more.

is the feature truck on the fun hump day radio show (starts roughly around the 30 min mark)

http://explorerforum.podbean.com/2011/03/23/19-vroom-zoomboom/

and you drive 26 hours ONE WAY to the carlisle all ford nationals in june 2010 and 2011, and grab second place in the s.u.v. all category!

scan00012.jpg

then in 2014 you go back to the same show you have been to 5 years in a row (nothing by most, but its one hell of a long drive) and take first!

trust me both of you guys have been a huge help with this, as well as other things with the truck. i was talking to a friend about this (who isnt really into cars or trucks) and telling them "yea, i have a couple of guys in the US that are helping me with this. if i am really stuck i can call them, or message them and they help me however they can". they were blown away by that. i mean, i have met john once years ago, but have never met jamie. i had said we are car people, and most of the time, thats what car people do for one and other.
so yes, i have the fuel pump kicking on now thanks to jamie. im also hoping what ever kinks i have with mine he can also solve with the ranger he is building as well. i was outside till around midnight putting the interior in. there is a few small things to do yet. i messaged the guy that will be doing the tuning for me to see if i have it running for today if he can start on it, and do some of the set up. he said he should be free, but things can change as well so we will see what happens.

sometimes things happen for there own reasons.
up until now there was no coolant in the motor. i figure i would put that in, as well as everything else that needed to be done, and give the guy a call who will be doing the set up and tuning. well low and behold my favorite coolant leak came back like it always does with this setup.
blower, mount and intake had to come back off just because i dont want to trust intake gaskets that have been torqued and walked away from for about 2 weeks. when i pulled it apart, this is what i saw.

295284122_381238890813499_5435917183169261744_n.jpg

i didnt touch anything. take a look and tell me, whats wrong with this picture. once again this was the way it was when i pulled it apart.

sometimes i shake my own head at myself....

LOL, sorry for laughing but that is funny. I am glad you had that coolant leak that made you have to take it apart again to find this.
Could have turned out much worse and probably would have been kind of hard to tune if it ran at all.
You are not alone; I am laughing because I have done it too. hahaha.
Once was on a Chevy 305 with red rags laying on top of the lifter valley to keep dirt out. I installed the intake manifold and then remembered they were there. Lucky for me it was a long time ago and the engine had a distributor which I had not installed yet.
I pulled the red rags out of the distributor hole like a magician pulling a long scarf out of his pocket. I was able to get them all out (4).
The other time was on my 98 two door Explorer, while working on the m90 setup. It was a blue shop towel, this time stuffed in the intake plenum leading to the supercharger. I forgot it was there and cranked the engine to test for fuel pressure, sucked it right through the supercharger. I had to take the supercharger off to get that out. LOL.
One thing that may help is leave a note on the steering wheel or somewhere reminding yourself to remove those pesky rags! LOL.

i think this is the 3rd time i have done something like that, and all 3 times with this truck and a supercharger on top of it. i was actually trying to remember if i pulled those out or not. i swore i did but it must have been the ones i put in the coolant passages.
yea, good thing i had to pull the blower again. im surprised because i did turn the motor a couple of times, but then again that was just bumping the starter to make sure it was working. i would bet those (paper towel btw) may have been sucked into the valves, then bad things would have happen. plus don has those heads fully ported and polished. they would have been destroyed. the guy that built the motor for don also no longer does hand porting or any porting for that matter anymore.

sweet mod!! The rags will break apart and clean the valves and exhaust for you !!! smart
I will have to try this. Does it work with the blue shop towels? Should I add some sea foam?

Its okay when its rags, its when its a bolt that got dropped when you don't kick the starter over :)
My stepson was doing a 4.0 OHV replacement, found a sweet OHV 4.0 with like 62K on it, he dropped a bolt and was convinced it hit the floor, but nobody could find it...They kept going. Startup = cost them an engine
bolt went through a few things.....engine needs rebuild :)
I bet he never does that again, you drop a bolt during engine assembly YOU FIND THE BOLT

Glad you had that leak, some things happen for a reason!

I have met many many good people because of these trucks over the years, it is all about the people first THEN the trucks
They bring us together!! even if it is just virtual

so its all back together now. hell, it even holds coolant! i noticed the belt looked like it had seen better days but will do for now. i will have to sit and wait. the guy that is going to help set it up, and tune it is at the track all weekend.

it was a falling success tonight. the guy who is going to set it up and tune it came over tonight. he looked everything over, made some small changes, then we went to turn the motor over. it wasnt showing a rpm signal. re checked my wiring, it was ok, pulled the connectors apart for the crank sensor, and found one wire had pushed out enough not to connect. fixed that, still no signal. after trying a few different things, he called his ford guy here who has done a ford holley terminator systems. he emailed him a few things to try. the first one, it finally was reading a signal and showed rpm while cranking. by then it was a little late to do any more. he wants to call holley on a few things that i told him i did and see how to go about changing it (moving pin locations in the pcm) and will come back tomorrow hopefully

emailed brett (well, text jamie to ask if brett) could resend the original tune file. that why would have a clean start and know i have a tune that wasnt messed with. loaded it in, and it would fart maybe once, but still not start. today i said eff it, and tore everything out from the pcm to the coil packs to check on where i messed up the wiring (and i am pretty sure i did). something isnt happy, including me.
this is starting to get the better of me. i have never lost a fight with this, or any other truck/car i have worked on, but it is coming close. summer is almost over, and i have drove it once.
i am going to take this stuff over to a friend and let him have a look at it. fresh eyes and someone who isnt biased. and someone whos nerves arent at the end of the rope!

You will get it up and running, it is just an obstacle you have to overcome.
Many obstacles get in our way in life,
but when we work hard and never give up, we push past these things and the reward is right on the other side!

just got back from my buddys place. and for the first time ever, i was not happy to hear i did something the right way. he tested the harness i made for continuity and everything check out. i am going to see if the injectors check as well. if they do, i am at a loss.

fingers crossed

checked the injector harness, and thats all good as well. never in my life did i want to have screwed something up i made until now.

i have hit a wall with this.

You have a no start? Have you checked for spark, fuel injector pulse, fuel pressure?
Which ones don't you have?
Power and ground to Holley unit?

So this is all new to me, firing one of these up, you are first I am not ready to do mine yet.
Your setupo is different due to the supercharger and your custom crank sensor
from the screen shots you sent me I have a couple of questions, maybe the forum can help us with

What firing order are you using?
Tell me about your crank sensor, what application is it for?
The tachometer is not moving, I know it says 150 something cranking rpm but the tach needle stays put? Wondering if this is a crank/cam sensor issue

Is 43 psi enough fuel pressure for your setup?

spark and fuel i have. it has backfired on me, and tried to kick a few other times. fuel, oh yea. you can smell it.
the holley system has power.

1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 is the fire order.

this is the crank sensor i am using.

i bought it with the 3D printed bracket from a member here. i messaged him last night and asked if he had to make any changes to his set up or tune, and he didnt.

not sure about the tach. maybe wont move till the motor is under its own power?

i never touched the fuel pressure from when it had the stock computer in it. i would have to say its fine. i think.

i was on the phone with brett last night. in the ignition parameters, under ignition type it was set to custom, and he asked me to change it to 2v 4.6 ford 2v 5.4 (it was something along that line). i had saved it to my laptop using a different name so i didnt erase the original start tune. tired again, and it wanted to start but still couldnt. then did something else, and it wouldnt go. it was also dark, my laptop died, and i was being taken advantage by every and all mosquitos and was getting pretty frustrated. i asked brett if he could make the changes to the tune and send them to me. havent seen them yet however. its also going the rain today as well. someone doesnt want this thing to run i swear.

I can confirm, fuel pressure is factory 43.
Is it possible the ignition is 180 degree's out?
Does the cam position sensor even get used anymore?

I wasn't sure if he was return or returnless
43 psi is great for a return style

Yes, should be using a 3 wire cam sensor with the Holley, the 2 wires do not work as well, people have a hard time getting a good signal from the 99-01 style 2 wire

Need to make sure the power wires are all hooked up properly, meaning some go to battery power some go to switched (acc) power

Brett will come through he always does, just busy and pulled in many directions that is for sure, something about work, kids, wife, lol

yes, have the three wire sensor and everything is the way it should be wired.

yea know don.....i have been waiting for you to post. finally you do, and you post something then after that i have 2 different people telling me the same thing!!!!!!!! why didnt you post this like 3 weeks ago! lol

well, i shouldnt be all happy just yet. havent tried it.
i was texting with brett yesterday and he had said that i may have to adjust the sync about 195 degrees out. shortly after that, david (wish i can remember his screen name here) who sold me his spare sensor, and mount for it, also messaged me this saying he forgot to mention this.

298133609_3166804693571742_1229443902799358030_n.jpg

his ignition is identical to mine but he is using a c.n.p. and his is running and driving. i will try this when i get time. may have to wait till friday, but i hope this works. nerves are getting frail.

btw jamie, if this works this may also save you a buttload of frustration when you go to start the ranger.

Sorry Tim, I've been folowing along pretty good, but miss some stuff.
I'm very interested in this also, except I have never actually done it so there's really nothing constructive for me to add.

The above post sounds very positive. Once you get the injector pulse/ignition spark timing in place that motor has to come to life.
It was sounding like with all the gas in the air, probably the biggest issue was ignition spark timing.

It's not in your nature to give up, but the frustration factor keeps going up and up. You will absolutely get Evil running. No question there.
