Has anyone else run into the U-Haul problem? I called to rent the smallest utility trailer they have, ( a 4x8 was available) but I was told after a 20 minute wait that they will not rent to any Explorers, period. They said that this is due to a pending lawsuit, and that this is the only vehicle that they will not rent to, no matter what. If you get on the website and enter in a 'Mounty instead of an X, it comes up as "approved". Is this due to the whole Firestone/Xploder ordeal, or is there something else involved? Also, the I entered in the same year, same drivetrain and WB (as close as possible) Ranger, and it was approved. WTF??? I have a '91 X, 4x 2dr Sport 5spd, 2" Skyjacker lift, 31" MT rubber, VERY stucturally sound. (278K, but they don't know that :). Just kinda thought this was BS and was wondering if this was justified or if its just due to corporate morons that don't know the diff.

I helped my sister move three weeks ago and i wanted to do the same, rent a trailer from U-Haul. Its the closest place to me that rents trailers, I got all the paperwork done, and handed it to the guy at the desk and he looks at it, looks at me and says sorry i cannot rent a trailer to you. I said why. THE MOF said quote "Sorry sir but due to specific regulations U-haul will not rent any trailers to customers who plan on towing the trailer with an Explorer." I said why not. The stupid A-Hole said quote " I wish i could change this issue but arguing about it will not change the fact that i cannot let you take the trailer today" My response was %#@%@# YOU, and i left.

I still wanted the trailer so i went to Lister and got a 4x8 foot trailer with no problems.:D:D

duct tape and a sharpie...make it a mountie :P

Ok, how could you own an Ex for soooooo long and not know about the UHaul factor?

(HA HA HA VVVV supposed to be funny, i am laughing as i write this)

Come on Donner I don't know when TNewton bought the 91 2 door but I personaly have only owned my ex for a few months. The exact date i bought it was January 11th of this year. Heck its so recent i still remember the exact time i signed the contract 8:07pm Pacific Standard Time.

kinda had a similar problem with u-haul last year my self .....when i found my x it was not running so it had to be towed home .due to time resrtictions and being the only truck to haul it being my colorado (4cyl) i went to u-haul to rent a car dolly .the lady told me that not only was my chevy not heavy enough to tow it but i kept getting asked all kinds of weird questions about the explorer... like are you sure you not renting it to tow with the explorer type stuff !!?? well ended up useing my father f-250 to tow it home but man what a headache to rent .had to wait till my father got off work then had him meet me at the place to pick up the car dolly ...they were not letting me out of there with that dolly with my chevy at all ....freaks.......

Just to summarize, that decision was made in 2004, after the many lawsuits involving Explorers, tires, and rollovers. One of the suits involved people in an Explorer towing a U-Haul. They do not say there is any safety issue, (proof is that they do accept the mountaineer) merely that they want to "distance themselves" from the bad reputation of the Explorer.

Care to see how hypocritical U-Haul is? Look at this from their website store:

Ya gotta know by now...

get this my future son in law (hes 20) works at U haul, they have NO PROBLEM renting him trailers, in fact we rented two 5x9 utility trailers with two Explorer's and we hooked the trailers up to our Explorer's right there on the U haul lot!!

Because he is an employee they did not care about hooking up to our Explorer's

Funny hua? I have pictures to prove it too, two explorer's with U haul trailers in tow
My Ex is even LIFTED and his 97 Ex has FIRESTONE tires LOL

Funny part is if you show up with a Mercury Mountaineer, they will rent you trailers all day long and they are the EXACT same truck....friggin lawyers

Well not only that they won't rent to Gen3 or later Explorers either even though they are completely different vehicles and the only thing the same is the name "Explorer" stamped on it.

"Do as I say, not as I do" u-haul style

Not only will u-haul sell you an Explorer Hitch Cover, but they will sell and install a u-haul hitch on your Ex. "so that you can tow something else, like a boat, or jet ski..." as told to me by a U-Haul attorney.

I planned on moving with a U-Haul trailer, and then I found this out. However, I feel for the distance I may potentially be traveling (NOLA to Los Angeles), it might be better to just put the mileage on a U-Haul truck and tow the Explorer on a U-Haul Car Carrier. Turns out I will probably be leaving here with a lot more hand-me-down furniture than I was expecting, too. :)

Sorry that won't help you with your problem, tho. Just go pick it up with someone else's truck, and then transfer it over to the Ex later.

I've had my X for about 3 yrs now, and I've just never had the need to rent a trailer with it up until this point. I'm living about 200mi away from everything i can borrow. :) I called a local rental company that is literally a block and a half away from the U-Haul, and they were more than happy to rent me a 5x8 flatbed, even included tie-downs for no charge. It's actually a little bigger than I was after, cuz all I am hauling is a Coats wheel balancer, but it'll work. Anyhow, thanx for the insight; this situation just kinda pissed me off. All because of a limited run of "bad" tires and several idiots who have no concept of how to drive a vehicle with a center of gravity a little higher than normal. Everybody's gotta have a racecar...

my sport trac's hitch is from uhaul. Ive now rented 2 car trailers and one 6x12 trailer from them.

I just told them it was a 4door ranger.

Also, I told them I was pulling a 89 honda crx, that way the weight will work out.

But the thing to remember is, if you wreck with a uhaul trailer in tow, you can't sue uhaul.

I also got to the point where a bought a used 5x8 trailer

SkanLaxJMO- I like the duct tape & sharpie idea.... hmmm.... probably won't fly, tho. :)

If you're looking for a basic utility trailer, you can get this from Home Depot or Costco for well under $1000. Ours has paid for itself many times over, and has been pulled by two different Explorers. It's not heavy-duty, but it's a great homeowner trailer.

Yeah, I know they can be had pretty cheap, but this is kind of a unique one-time use only thing. The situation is that I'm currently going to school here in Chicago, working as an alignment tech for a local shop, but I'm from MI, and moving back there in August when I graduate. I bought this balancer from the shop for dirt cheap (couldn't say no, works great), and I have to get it out of there this weekend, when I go back home for the holiday. I was hoping it would fit in the truck with the hood & display removed, but it's a no-go by a half an inch (a little heavy, too). Not that you were that interested, but there it is.
