I have 55K on my 2002 Sporttrac and the original tires leak. I have looked at my Ford dealer and the TireRack. Are there any tires I should stay away from?

Yes super expensive ones :)

Hahaha just kidding. What are you looking to get out of a tire? All season? long wear? stock size? whats your budget?

Firestone Wilderness A/T (the infamous recall tire).

You pose some good questions. OEM, same tire as stock, at the dealer $115.00. I would spend more, for a better all-around tire. Living in the midwest, we get snow and ice. I might not keep it for 50K more. Is a 255 taller than a 235, and would it give better milage? Does anyone else have leaky tires or is it the wheels? TIA John

this will explain your tire size question, because i'm too lazy to retype it....

the numbers are as follows....the first one is the width in centimeters to figure out inches, divide by 25.4. The 2nd number is the aspect ratio, this tells you how tall the tire is in respect to the width as previously stated. So, a 255/75R15 would go something like this.....
255/25.4=10.04 in Wide
10.04*.75=7.53 in this is how high the tire is around the rim....
so, the tire is a total of 7.53*2+ 15(rim size)= 30.06 in tall

they no longer even make those..... and a lot of that problem was ford running a 4500 pound truck with 26 psi per tire......

on that note, we have firestone destination le's on our explorer, nad thats what i put on my girl's durango, they are pretty nice, balance well, and the ride is very smooth, they last a good amount too, even with aggressive driving....

I was looking at the Firestone LE, but a Discount Tire salesman told me that they tend to wear on the inner and outer edges due tire flexing. Something about the construction of the tire, like less belts(?), and that allows more side to side flexing. I guess I should have paid more attention to what he said.

I told him that I am not a big fan of the Goodyear Wrangler RT/S that was the Firestone recall replacement tire. He said that the Firestone LE is very comparable to that Goodyear, so if I hated the RT/S, then I'll hate the LE.

You could get some BFG A/ts in the stock size. Those will last long, work well in your road conditions and look nice at the same time.

maybe its jsut me, but all the bfgs i had suck in wet weather, and didnt last as long as everyone says they do, and i have had seeral sets of different bfgs, muds, ats, newerstyle km, and kos......

My dad had ats and lasted him 75k miles... My mom had them on her 95 Ex and lasted her 58k miles. All of the sets of bfgs I had lasted at least 40k with all the abuse I put them through.

Must be just you.

for a good all around tire i really love my Toyo Open Country A/Ts. they have very good wet/dry/snow/mud gription. ride nice and are quiet.

were they the kos or the older harder compund?

i have gotten maybe 20k out of each set of bfgs i have had, and i have had several sets.....

coincedentally, my dads ranger had bfg radial t/as on it and they lasted him only around 30k and he is a very conservative driver

on a related note, continental and general everythings suck, except for the general mud terrains

michelin ltax a/t and m/s are very good and have excellent tread wear, you can easily get 75k out of them.

Dad's were the old ones and mom's were the ko's. ;)

I've gotten over 30k on all of my bfg tires, ATs old and MTs new.

I had these on my ex before I got more of an agressive tire. They work really well for about everything, but arn't the greatest for mud. Mine had over 60k on them when I took them off and easily could have gotten another 10k on them.

my toyota has bfg's on it and i really like them, altho they are rather loud at highway speeds (plus theres like no insulation on the cab). When i bought my explorer at 154k miles it had starfire a/t's on it with about half tread left, and they were at around 2/32" when i sold it on friday with 164k miles. The biggest thing with making most tires last is rotation, balencing, and proper inflation.

I switched mine out for bfg a/ts but those were great tires, never got rotated or anything, one of them had 2 big screws in it and it held air fine, and the only reason i took them off was they were dryrotting and the sidewalls were destroyed, i had about 80k on them.
