whats faster, explorer or civic?

This is a funny thread. :p Does anyone know if he beat the civic? Isn't that how the thread started? LOL!

Good question. Well did ya?
Damn I wish it kept going with the honda/5.0 mustang thing, I was enjoying it. I was just about to throw in my 55 chevy big block thing just to add more rice to the fire. Might just do it anyway HA HA

Do it! I dare ya! ;)

I'm not going to do it, I'm not going to do it. WTF let me wipe some dust off the old photos, give me a minute.

I wish those ricers and 5.0 mustangs were around back in the late 60s and early 70s This barn door chevy ran consistant low 10s and occasional high 9s with pump gas, Sunuco 260 slamin a muncie 4 speed.

Even ran up against a few rails and fuel bikes. Of course they did spot me.

That's a 427 chevy sleeved and bored to the max then stroked back down to 430 CIs This gave it the same bore to stoke ratio as a 302, which is an optimum ration, at least it was way back. No substitute for cubic inches. Keep in mind this was over 30 years ago. Those are custom Herb Gebbler headers with different size tubes depending on the length of the intake runner.

More debate, in terms of longivity

Let's assume 2 cars with identical power to weight ratio
both running approx 12 second et's
1 is a v-8 with powerband from 3000 to 6000 rpm
other is 4 cyl with powerband from 6000 to 9000 rpm
during the 12 second run the v-8 will make 900 revolutions
the 4 banger will make 1500

let's assume both have about a 3" stroke
v-8 piston travels 2700 inches
4banger piston travels 4500 inches
in the same amount of time, which means a huge piston speed difference
think how hard that little 4 cyl is working trying to make that power, and the increased forces in slamming it back and forth alomost twice as hard.

Top fuel dragsters use v-8 large displacement engines because they are the quickest period. BTW during a race they will turn only 710 revs and are most likely toast after that

i raced a modified civic(assuming 93 ex coupe) in my 5.0 explorer (headers, intake, exhaust and Bama chips retune) and beat it off the line and on a freeway run, i pulled through all gears

I also raced a modified civic in my 92 Escort GT beater car and ket up with it (i had a messed up tranny and motor, cone filter, ngk plug wires, 2.25 exhaust all the way back). I could of probably taken him but he got off the line first on the 2nd run. Oh yeah and my escort took a early 90's chevy 1500 truck.

i wanna know what the outcome was on this race.

Your stories and experiences are what I grew up with Rookie.

I respect the bowtie, but I still hate em :D

My uncle and dad have had many a good time at the track in cars similar to yours. If they only knew that their tales would create my cousin and I's obsession. He liked his Cheby's and Pontiacs, I liked my Mustangs. In the end we both put in entirely too much wrench time and money instead of going to high school classes ;)

Just for S&G's I had to find a Civic today while I was driving the Mustang. Unfortunately for him, once that light turned green, all he saw was my tails. So much for the top end :D

Sad when a worn out 5.0 Mustang can annihilate a "modded" Civic.
;) :p

well someone said they wish the honda argument would keep going...so i guess ill do it. in one of my last posts, right after i called bullshit on the guy, i told him the motor alone would cost at least 2 grand. but i was wrong, so im here to apologize. THE MOTOR ALONE WOULD BE AT LEAST 5!!!i was thinking he was talking about a crv motor, but he was talking about a rsx type s.you can build these motors to run 11's, its very possible, but you will not do it for 5 grand. and my offer still stands, ill still kiss your ass if you can prove it.

Yeah. I ran a search and saw it was an RSX motor. I don't get how they come up with these engine names. I guess it kind of makes them look better because if they went by CC they would get mixed up with dirtbike and lawn mower engines :p

ROFL :D

hahahaha

It is amazing how much torque and power they can get out of very efficient small engines these days, some of the technology is just outstanding.

I'm posting this again because it's the last post on page 2 and I doubt anyone will see it:

Your funny.. Did you mustang run 11.4 last year on 26.3 lbs of boost

BeauJ said:
With 26# of boost, that's all your ran?? BWHAHAHAHAHAHA. You said spending 5 grand for 13s is sad, NO, 26 lbs and 11.4 is very sad. You should be in 10s. I see 13 lbs of boost in my Lightning on a good day, $700 in mods, street tires and I put down a 12.6 with a 1.89 60 ft. With slicks and a better tune I should get a 12.20 with ease. There's a few turbo guys with 16-17 psi running mid-low 10s. One is still on his stock short block. And you talk about power to weight? Cubic inches mean more. There's no replacement for engine displacement.

I'm with Beau. Besides, four-cylinder performance is only cool if you have 2 tires. :)
My bike should have 4 cylinders- the car needs 8.
Guy here in town has a '93 GT with a Vortech- running the pulley for about 17psi, he was running high 9's. He would honda's too- CBR's. Light's out 600's!!

I love emissions! 600 HP smog legal beats are hard to do.

the argument cat actually go either way. every car performance car has thier strenghts and weaknesses. yes v8-s can hit some pretty enourmous horsepower ratings, but ive seen the 3.0 inline six in the toyota make just about 1,000 hp on a stock bottom end. ive had quite a few cars both import and domestic and i loved them all. i fully expect to get around 600 crank hp in my current project a 1991 mitsu eclipse gsx, and that's out of a 2.0 litre. the key to making high horsepower as all of you will agree is meticulous tuning. people have said bad things about some of the cars ive built, but hey who cares if you like what u have then screw everyone else right?? so we should all just stop hating each others cars whether its import or domestic and just appreciate the love of cars and motorsports....

oh man what a project. my buddy is undertaking an AWD eagle talon which he hopes to hit the 11 second mark with. Im not sure how far along he is now, but last I heard all he needs is to reassemble the car and motor.
I was trying to find a vid, but cant find the link...

yeah its been a hell of a project. ive got over 18k invested in it so far. getting over 300 hp/litre is a fun challenge, but its very do-able. so far my biggest challenge has been keeping the center differential from puking its guts out. but im actually looking into converting to rear wheel drive and installing a two speed power glide. there r quite a few race dsm's with this combo that regularly turn mid nine's and below. i just love building cars, its a fun challenge that's different with every car...

If I am not mistaken the Fox bodied stangs were of the lightest Mustangs produced. I've owned seven Mustangs six were fox's and two of the Fox's were notchbacks.. Just a estimate but if my memory serves me correctly the Notch backs weighed in at only 3000 to 3200 #'s at the worst case scenario. So anyone stating that a Fox would weigh in at 3800 is insane. The '05 is portly and still checks in at around 3800#'s with the 1994-2004 checking in somewhere in the middle... These are not appoximates just a rough weight of these cars.. My 1995 GT loaded out with pw,pdl,mach460,a/c,etc.. only weighed in at 3500with out driver. :)
