351 vs. 302

Never said they weren't out there, and never said 400-450 were big #'s...read what I wrote....I looked at the website he directed me to, and the biggest #'s I found on that site were in the 400-450 range. I'm at around 350 crank hp with mild bolt ons, so 400 is not hard to hit. I could get there easily with a little bit of the funny gas if I wanted to.

My point was that 500 hp and up cars are not abundant as he claims, and that it takes a LOT more to get the big hp #'s than most people realize. Yeah, there are a lot over at modular fords, but that's where I would expect to find them, after all, it's a site dedicated to the mod motor cars.

Y'all need to really read what is posted before replying....

I did read what you wrote. I didn't say that YOU said that 400-450 were big numbers. What I said is that if your going to a site where the members are saying those are big numbers, then your probably on a small Mustang site. Jeff, you might want to actually read my posts as I understood exactly what you said and meant. :D

You are absolutely right with both of those statements. It takes a CRAPTON!!! of money to get there! I hit over $20,000+ for performance in the X about a month or so back and I will only be making around 600rwhp. Of course it would be much cheaper to hit that number in a car (Cobra, Mach1, Vette or other) already kind of designed to be capable to hit those numbers. It takes a lot of money, time, dedication, and knowledge (if turning your own wrenches).

I bolted a tornado, an e-bay chip/ resistor and a hair dryer to my intake and I got 600 rwhp

It wasnt that hard.

Dang..if that worked for you, my lawnmower needs some more power...tornado here I come!!!!

don't know why you think i'm suggesting it's cheap and easy to get those hp numbers, or why you think i'm too dumb to realize the work involved. this wasn't about me- i do audio/visual systems not this stuff (for now). I just happen to get to see a lot of high hp cars and talk to their owners through my work. I DO also realize how much work it is to do custom bodywork, and stereo installations etc. and i think that likely gives me a perspective from which i can respect the work that goes into a 1000 hp mustang (not going to get into the fact that most of these guys locally are probably buying complete motors and paying people to put them in and add some forced induction etc. etc.).

Okay my friends, input is seriously needed from all gearheads on this..

Sometime in the next month I fully plan on ordering a new engine. A 351 would kick ass but unfortunately it's just too much fabricating for my poor budget :( So the question now is:

331 or 347?

The 331 doesn't cost much less than the 347, and horsepower-wise they make around the same amount... it's the torque that suffers between the two. Also, supposedly a 331 will hold up to the abuse better in the long run. But a 347's a 347 :D It's all about the numbers, baby ;)

Opinions??????

I say go for the torque
I have had no engine issues treating mine as a daily driver.
I also noticed a fuel economy bump from my stock engine BTW

Imagine the force on a wrench, moving your grip outwards will increase the torque you apply. Same thing happens with longer stroke, and the 347 adds .4 " of it

347...then you can get a plate that says 347strkr

The main reason I'm torn between the two is longevity. Jt, I'm glad your engine's holding up fine, that's really good news to me... but keep in mind that I'll be putting a power adder on mine, probably of the Procharger variety ;)

I could give you a couple of these if you make this choice

A properly set up 347 will last a looonng time. The problem is that people get addicted to the power, and up the boost...byebye motor. If you keep the mods reasonable, a 347 is the way to go :)

Don't worry about putting a power adder on yours. A buddy of mine has a twin turbo 347 putting out 1,012 rwhp in his 1995 Mustang GT. Properly built, the 347 will take a lot of abuse.

95 cobra "r"block 347,z304 heads,hydraulic roller
twin innovative t61 turbos
g-force T-56
1020rwhp873rwtq
10.52@146 17"dr's(shake down w/tt)

Stole this from his sig being that I am lazy. I was a little mistaken, it is 1020rwhp and a Cobra. I don't know why I got GT stuck in my head. Oh well. As you can see for the power he is making his ET is not too good. He is still going for a personal goal on DR's. If he was running slicks and was able to hook it he would be DEEP into the low 9's.

I was just wondering what you decided to go with in terms of engine, I to would like to run 400 - 450 hp but in a 2001 sportrac. I was considering a 347 stroker, but was wondering if this is the same engine as a 1993 mustang 302?

Listen a EFI 351 into your Explorer is nothing to laugh at
A built 351 in your Ex is a monster

yes you will have to do a bit more work to get the 351 in there over the 302, but it can be done. Exhaust and heater box being the biggest issues as well as the steering shaft clearance to header, just like the 302 conversion just a bit more extreme

a running drivetrain take out from the junk yard with low miles 351 style is alot cheaper then building or buying a crate engine 331 or 347

true the 302 SB will fit easier and a little better, but if you want more then the stock 5.0L power which is pretty good in a 2 door then it can get expensive real quick.
So the 351 is a good option to look at if you want to make a real monster or an explorer.

Now with that said the 5.0L is no slouch and it looks right at home under th ehood of an Explorer. I will likely put a 331 in the Bronco someday, build the trans a bit and get a real low range t case or doubler.
For my 96 explorer I have seriously considered putting a 351 in there strictly for wicked towing ability and power

dont most of the parts on a 5.0 bolt on to the 351?

Yes.....

However the dress was different for the different models of vehicle that they were installed into. Typically if you convert to 351 from 302 you need all new front dress, and also oil pan, etc...The blocks are nearly identical with the 351being a bit beefier with taller deck heights.

I'm liking the idea of the 351 more and more, would the torque monster headers from the 302 fit the 351, and also what is the last year the 351 was offered wasn't it 1996? I've been looking at the 1993-1995 lightning 5.8L with the vortec supercharger. What are your thoughts!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and alot of work, but if you can pull it off you have a monster
Conversions like this can take a year to complete or sometimes never get finished. Take your budget and then triple it.
Expect to have alot of bugs to work out when its done to get it right

Its a big commitment but would be oh so *****in
My thoughts are get everything you need from one donor vehicle to start, for all the conversion I have done and been involved with finding parts and getting them to all work together can really add alot of problems and $$$.
So if you get 90% of what you need from one car you save big time in the long run, as in buy the whole vehicle
