351 vs. 302

i agree. I have had many thoughts about where i want my explorer to go, but i am just sittin tight. My current thought is to go bigger then a 302, but i have a lack of knowledge. i have been looking for a lightning that was totalled, no luck. So my other thought was a reman. lighting engine, or a good 351 stroked to a 393 and a twin screw supercharger. I would then use a cobra r hood, mated to my current hood. I dont expect anything for about 5 years, as that will be when i have my own garage to work out of.

I still say 460.

Hell, what do I know im just here to watch.

I was just wondering what you decided to go with in terms of engine, I to would like to run 400 - 450 hp but in a 2001 sportrac. I was considering a 347 stroker, but was wondering if this is the same engine as a 1993 mustang 302?

If you only want 400-450 hp why not just build your 4.0 SOHC V6 with forged internals, swap to blower cams and then bolt a Vortech (or other brand) centrifugal supercharger on there??? Of course i don't know enough of what tranny you have to give any ideas or input in that department. With those engine mods you would esily be able to make 400+ horsepower. Some of it would be a little custom, but not NEARLY as custom as a 351 swap. Just another option for ya.

Wow good luck keeping a trans behind that thing

Maybe a 4.6 or a 5.4 would be the way to go, I rather spend the cash on something different and it seems it will cost alot. What is the differenence in width from a 4.6 SOHC and a 4.6 DOHC and the same for a 5.4l SOHC and 5.4DOHC. As I think these would be the only altenatives with regards to emissions. According to law here I can only use a engine of the same year or newer. What do think of the Sean Hyland Motorsport engines?

Thanks Rick

The 302 has a block deck height of 8.0 inches, very short.
The 351W has a block deck height of 9.52 inches, much taller and wider.
The big blocks are around 10.2", way to tall.

Ford should be ashamed of the poor heads that they have out for the modular engines. They all should be making about 25% more power than they do. GM has the pushrod 5.7 engine making well over 400HP. The NA 4.6 DOHC should make more. The modular engines need much better heads and induction.

Give me a BMW 6.0 liter engine from a McClaren F1, CA legal 627HP.

Do the 302 stroked with a positive displacement blower, 600+HP., any easy fit. Good luck,

im interested in this as well. Would a 6L bmw engine fit? that would be ****.

here is a link to some ford engine dimensions and weights: http://www.geocities.com/infieldg/v8enginesizes.html

try this for some history, good for where to look for swaps:

Boss 302

Does anyone have any info on the new Boss 302, this is a nice block and sold through ford racing parts. This new block has four bolt mains, and a mustang oil pan will bolt in place, does that mean a explorer oil will also bolt in place? Apparently the engine will be offered in 360hp to 500hp
configurations this would be cool!!!!

A 460 is a monster block. It might fit if you don't need fenders. I would go with the 302 if it were me. Yes the 351 is more powerful stock but there are a lot more high performance parts for a 302. HP 302 parts are a dime a dozen and you can get them anywhere. I think you could make power cheaper and easier with a 302. Makes your life a little easier. And you can already get a kit with everything you need to put a 302 in a ranger. An explorer would be about the same as a ranger. An f-150 tranny (4x4) from about 1995 would shoehorn in to help out.

I am sure the new BOSS 302 will not be of OHV configuration. Most likely a punched out modular 4.6 that makes 302 ci.

yes the new 5.0L in the ford Racing catalog is not a pushrod engine anymore, its a bad ass 4.6L

I am in the process of putting in a 1988 F.I. 351W / C6 / Dana 20 twin sticked into my 91 Explorer. I have the luxury of havign friends who fab for a living, and found that it is far easier to fab up a new engine and trans crossmember then trying to make everything fit where the stock 4.0 was.

several small pieces of 1 1/2" DOM make up the cross members with bends at just the right locations and 1/4" plate where the actuall mounts mount too, all Mig welded together. Total cost, about $330 for the entire drivetrain and harness and about $100 in fabricating material..

*****in!

ah come on the 4 door has some major advantages too, it just depends on the obstacle, try climbing dump bump in a BII for example = a bit scary, explorer with lockers = no problemo

If the 4 door just didnt have the rear springs under the frame it would really rock, they are always getting hung up on those front hangers, the BII has a *****en approach and departure angle but its tippy going over both directions forward and back.

thanks though!

I think he was referring to the new BOSS 302, wich is not a modular, but a pushrod.
