410Fortune - 96 5.0L XLT refurbish (making 1 great Ex from 2)

I think it was something like this:

I found TDC each time I removed the stock rockers, then each time I torqued the new ones back down. But I've heard you can find 0 lash, than just torque them down to 17ft lbs no matter where they are in the stroke. But I don't know. I didn't mind finding tdc 8 more times. But your guy probably knows more.

this is going to be wild. You can allways turn crank and watch how the rockers are opening and closing. For example when the ex. valve stops moving on the ex. stroke you know the piston is close to TDC, and that way when you remove the valve keepers and the valve does drop, it won't go far. Lots of luck

I just changed valve springs, seals and keepers on a (gasp) Chevy 400 SB. It is pretty similiar to the 302. I took my compression tester, removed the valve core to allow two way air flow, and put it in the sparkplug hole. I then plugged it into my air line at about 110 psi. If this pressure doesn't hold the valve closed, then you have issues with your valve seats. I had to tap the top of the spring with a socket that fit over the valve stem to break the seal that develops over time, then used a lever type spring compressor to compress the springs enough to remove the keepers with a magnet. The lever type worked like a charm and i didn't have to remove my exhaust manifolds to change it out. Then you only have to manually rotate the engine to set the lifter preload after you change out the springs, cam, etc.

An old trick to prevent dropped valves.... remove the sparkplug and stuff in as much cotton rope as you can fit into the cylinder. A dropped valve won't fall far that way. (Yeah been there done that). Still think you ought to put a new tranny in! ;)

When I replaced the heads on my V8, I didn't bother to find TDC when I tightened down the rockers. I just rotated the crank to get the valves into their closed position and then torqued them down.

glacier this trans only has 83K on it, is in primo shape and was running perfect, I am not made of $$$!! hahaha although this project is taking much of it already

410Fortune,

I would like to thank you and Section525 for the compliments on Torque Monster Headers. I try to build the best product possible. I hope everyone that puchases our product is content with the results...

Just wanted to let you know that CobraXP just got his Torque Monster Headers (Smooth Tubes) too! I'm hoping for great results with the his blower setup. Section, he's changing from FMS headers to TM Headers.

410, did you get the 1" intake spacer from Ford Racing? All the Best.

Lookit all that shiny stuff. SWEET. Can't wait to see the finished product. :D

Who needs a 42" LCD TV over some badass motor parts anyways?

Hell yeah screw the 42"...unless you got a 360, then well it might be a hard decision for me.

shhhhhhh I got the TV too....but there goes the hot tub! hahaha
So many projects, so little time.

I would like to thank Matt at my local Ford dealer, he gave me a Ford Motorsports catalog about 3 months ago, It sat on my coffee table for a couple weeks before I bought the cam, I just couldnt take it anymore!! Thanks section for already doing this same upgrade and making sure the explorer computer wont explode!

Robert, my 1" intake spacer is here and it is a Ford Racing part :)
One of these days I will get to install that sucker....progress on the Ex has been slow this week, my buddy couldn't help me yesterday but we will get that valvetrain installed this weekend for sure!

hehehe valve train is installed, cam, double roller timing chain, camshaft, 1.6 rollers and springs, search is on for 93 Cobra valve covers here in town.
I did not have to remove the headers or the heater box, but this engine was pretty easy to work around.

pics coming...

Were the rockers making contact or are you just going for bling? I found some sweet covers, but since the driver's side header comes up so far they would not work. :(

Robert told me which covers will clear everything, I believe its a 93 Cobra but info is at home.
going for clearance. I know you said you cleared with an air chissel, but where did you have to use it?
