.... Dollar for dollar, there aren't many cars faster than mine.

Pretty bold statement from someone driving a 2 ton boat anchor....Unless you're pretty well modded up, there are a ton of stock cars out there that can be bought for under $3k will clean your clock.... I can go buy a 89 Mustang LX 5.0 for $2k, toss a nitrous kit on it and put 10 lengths on you in the 1/4 mile.....

LOL I think the 6th generation Camry is faster than yours
(its ranked the quickest in the D-segment; 0-60 typically in the mid 6)

Carbeurator...am I that old. I haven't used that word in so long I think I probably misspelled it.

"there aren't many cars faster than mine." There are probably a few explorers on this site alone that are faster. I know of at least one of my buddies that would pass you as if you were standing still. I know a few other people that would probably whoop your car as well. Not raining on your parade but always remember there is always someone faster, always.

I'm well aware of the fact that there are many vehicles on the road faster than mine. You need to re-read what I said - "Dollar for dollar, there aren't many cars faster than mine". I have $1,800 invested in my car. That is for the purchase price, and I've outrun every Camaro or Mustang I've ran against. Rice doesn't stand a chance.

Ahaha oh I forgot that you mentioned the $1,800 in the previous replies.
Now i see.. its riiiiigtttt, there.. there it is.. There.

And I can put nitrous on my 3.8 and smack a modded 5.0 Stang. I have only $1,800 total in it now...

Are we talking about my Explorer or my T-Bird? I'm talking about my T-Bird. My X is about the slowest thing I've ever owned, lol. Can a 6th gen Camry be bought for $1,800?

I just mentioned dollar for dollar, I never said any price before.

So, is everyone jumping me for something or does it just seem that way to me? Did I mess up somewhere? Come on, I'm just the new guy trying to fit in with what I *thought* was a decent group of guys.

Without giving us a figure, it would be hard to speak "dollar for dollar" because we dont know how many "dollars" there are. Got it?

We're not jumping on you, it just your statement, as some people have stated, seemed "bold".

Ah, gotcha. I'll try to more clear next time.

I do appologize for my previous post (post #42), I thought you were talking about the Explorer.

yeah...I don't think I'd trust anyone that has a '63 firebird and calls a 4 barrell carb 'instant boost'... just a suggestion.

Marinesniperkid 600+ hp is a booooooooold statement man. Your friend was very likely talking out his ass. Even assuming he was able to fab allot of metal parts there are still a crapton of other things that cannot be fabbed by a metal worker that need to be tackled and are EXTREMELY expensive. I will not take the time to list those because I do not really take a project like this seriously. Another kid with extremely grandiose ideas before understanding what it takes to get a V8 vehicle to 500 hp let alone a V6 to 600+.

That would be a tall order even for someone like James or I to do and we have done this stuff quite a bit. We could do it, and matter of fact James probably will end up eventually doing it even if he hasn't planned to yet :p: I find threads like this as pure entertainment because you might as well be saying that you want to build a 4 seater airplane with $500, a book of matches, and an empty paint can and fly around the world with it. I don't intend to come off as really mean here but you need a HUUUUGE reality check.

Rocket, very true. Speed cost money how fast do you want to go?

Grant it there are both 4.6 and 5.0s that are well over 1000 hp but those horsepower numbers cost major $$$$$$$. Benett Racing engines has a 347 turbo motor with 800+ horse for 25K

my cousin spent $50 K on just heads( Double plug racing) for his hemi street car and this was in the early 90s.

BEST THREAD EVA!!!! lol

Its just a 2 point bar right behind the front seats with a 3/8" steel plate from the bar welded to the B-Pillars instead of having a 4 point running into the back, after I saw all the crushed A-Pillars at the wrecking yard I figured I should get one,I'll find some pictures.

I had a SC, a Mustang with different heads and intake will roast a SC unless you had more than a stock blower, Magnussun or whatever( havent follwed 3.8s in a while, I just tossed an EFI 351W/393 in my other SC :D), maybe Coy Miller heads etc and it'll run about mid 13s on street tires.

I had a ported stock blower, 10% od, 3:27s, underdrives, 70mm TB, 73MM MAF, custom cam, mild ported heads, dual IC, free flow exhaust, cone intake, and the thing ran 15 flat at like 96mph :(

Oh by the way I love my 5.0 gas guzzzzzler

Ill second that

I seriously doubt that he can get anywhere close to that 600hp he claims without putting out some serious cash. Honestly I don't see the point unless you don't need your Explorer as a daily driver. You would be down in the 3-4 mpg maybe even less. It would destroy the drive line fairly quickly, and my guess is the engine will have a very short and unreliable life. For probably less money you could do a 5.0 swap, trust me its more power then you will ever need.

My advise is also not to race a 5.0 Mustang, with an SUV.

Carburetor. I'm 22 and I don't misspell that one.

As for a 600hp 4.0, it comes down to money. Anybody remember that guy that was going to bolt up the DOHC Cosworth heads to this block? That's where I'd start- if you could work out all the problems with that setup, you'd be on your way.
Now naturally, of you re-engineer the heads, you'll (hopefully) have dealt with that pesky Timing Tensioner issue, and if you can keep the timing chains from slinging apart at upwards of 5k RPMs, again, you're on your way to 600hp.
Personally, I was raised on a dictum of "all throttle, no bottle," so I'd elect to build a higher-compression motor without forced induction or Nitrous.
This would mean sourcing forged pistons, rods, a crank and a high-volume oil pump.
I've heard that the stock length on the rods in a 4.0 are nearly identical to that of the venerable Chevy 350- if this is true, I don't need to explain the possibilities.
Beyond that, we all know the rest- headers, full exhaust, radical cams, completely new computer tune, hot ignition, E-fan, etc. etc.
Don't forget that nothing in your drivetrain will last more than a week of putting up with that kind of power, and that you'll be rebuilding the motor every 25k miles or so.
hopefully by now you've realized that it doesn't much matter what you do- this is going to cost way, WAY more than it's worth.
aspire to something modest: 275 to 300 ponies out of that 4.0... it's going to crap out at around 100k miles, anyway.
If you're serious about keeping up with the joneses, swap up to a force-fed 347, it's the only way.

Unless of course you are "Macgyver" then i truely beleive he could make this plane you speak of.
