I like to start my truck and let the engine warm up for about 5 minutes every morning. My truck sits to the right of the house, at the top of a slope/hill.

This morning, I went to my truck at about 7:20am to start it since I had a 7:30am meeting at the coffee shop around the corner. I went back inside, grabbed my books, my laptop, and did one last run through of needed items for the day.
I walked out to my driveway at about 7:26 and my truck was gone.
I looked to the right, down the driveway, and saw some big black shape. I dropped my bag and immediately ran to my tire-side-up Explorer.
I pieced together what had happened. The emergency brake cable had snapped/become disengaged, and my truck rolled down the driveway headed directly towards my across the street neighbor's front door.
Amazingly, when the front wheels hit the grass, the vehicle turned almost 80 degrees, avoiding the house entirely, but not avoiding the '06 Toyota Camry...

I am now a member of the rollover posse, and I never even went off-road.

Geico was amazing with their service (I've heard plenty of tales otherwise), and I'm now in the market for another vehicle. I really want another Explorer, but I only need a vehicle for about a year, since I plan on moving to Manhattan next summer. I might actually get a little civic, since I know there will be a market to sell it in come summer time.
Anyway, nobody was hurt, and at least we didn't have to call the home insurance adjuster too!
Karl

PS - Let's see who can get the closest to the dollar amount of the insurance check.... Closest bidder gets a prize!

Holy ****! That is crazy!!! Glad nobody was hurt.

As for the check I'll say $4,875.

If I'm right can I have the center console? :D

Again, glad nobody was hurt!

Any bigger pictures?

Sorry to hear that, that's awful. I hope you do get some fair amount for it, I'll guess $4000.

FYI, would you consider an Explorer which had all of the Saleen XP8 parts installed by Saleen? It was a rare truck that someone actually took to Saleen to have the kit installed. A member of the E...X.com site owns a real XP8 and bought the other truck for his daughter. Now he's wanting to sell it, she doesn't want a truck. I forgot how much it was he was asking for it. The XP8 parts are worth a lot, but no one will swap them out for all of the trouble. Regards,

Below is a quote of the sale offer from a gentleman in Toronto; "Hi All
After enjoying the clone I bought for my daughters-they have moved on and I want someone on the forum to have this great vehicle and am offering it to you B4 I put it on ebay and try to sell it locally

It is a 96 Eddie Bauer that was taken to the factory by the owner and was fitted with the following

Carbon fiber hood
Borla Exhaust
Full Racecraft Suspension
Full body kit front, rear, skirts and door panels
Chrome XP8 wheels
Carbon Fibre Mirror cover(1 missing)
Excellent Scorpion tires(1 new)
All decals
Carbon Fiber door armrest covers
Saleen pedals

Black on Black
Reads 64000 miles
Custom built Recaro like seats
$8500

And a smooth running 96 Explorer thrown in which has a few minor issues that I can outline to anyone seriously interested. I also have pix available to send any of you-send me your e-mail address"

Send me some pics of that. Sounds interesting. I have to get something soon, so I'm not sure which direction I'm going to head...
Thanks for teh heads-up. I hope more than $4K. But we'll see.
BTW, I plan on getting a bunch of the parts out of it, but someone told me I would be unable to remove any performance parts (BBK, MAF, etc.) without replacing with stock parts. the thing is totaled. Anyone know about this part of the scenario?
Karl

Damn!! I dont even have an ebrake since i swapped whole rear end assemblies. Now you got me thinking i need to find a way to make one work....

Buy it back from the insurance company and part it out. Then have a local boneyard come pick up the rest of whats left.

One of our friends had that happen to his 5spd Acura Legend coupe. The car wasn't even running. He had it parked on a hill (facing up hill), set the parking brake and put the car in first. He was washing the car when it popped out of gear, rolled down the hill and into the neighbors garage.

Apparently the parking brake cable was basically worthless

Sorry to hear for your loss, good thing no one was hurt

As far as value, for a '98 Sport, OHV, 5spd - I'm going to say best case scenario $4300, worst case $3400

Sorry :(

Every time I've heard of peoples cars getting totaled the owner was able to take out after market stuff. Like stereos and stuff. You might want to put your factory spindles back on though if you take the lift ones off

Wow. that is pretty random! i'm gonna call the check 5200......

No way. Man Mr. Burns this sucks.

I got 4000 to fix my first gen two years ago when i had my accident

My guess is 4850

I'll be the optimistic one of the bunch and say $6,150.71

Wow, that's awful!

Glad it missed the house and any people. I'm going to guess $5100.

So even after the e-brake snapped it popped out of park? This worries me because I dont even have an e-brake and I have a hill of a driveway. I better start turning the wheels when I park.

That's why if there is a accident, the car goes home first....then I call the insurance company;)

I was hit years ago, and BB on the '85 Ranger was $1300. I thought for sure it was a total, so I told the tow truck to take it home. That afternoon I pulled all my aftermarket stuff off it, even ran to the JY and bought junk wheels and tires for it. It came with in $5 of toatling and they gave me a choice to fix it or total it. I said fix it! They did, and then I put everything back on, sold it for $2500 and bought a '96 S-cab Ranger;)

Close to the same thing happened to me. But I was driving down the street in my old car ('94 Probe GT) When I was hit by a "driver-less car" as the laughing policeman wrote in the report. A guy was letting his '80something Mazda 323 warm up and it shot out of his driveway in to my pass side 1/4 panel.

Wow, if I can get anythign near the numbers y'all are posting, that would be great.
The tow truck driver offered to put the truck at my home, and then he turned around and realized that would put my Explorer back at the top of the hill. No way for his tow truck to turn around and leave once my truck was up there..... and I'm sure the neighbors would be none too happy about having my truck back up there! :)
I'd love to get another Ex and swap out all my performance parts..... Look at the F/S thread now.

Karl

I can't believe no one else has said it.....

It'll buff right out!!!!

Seriously though, that really sucks. I still cant see how it managed to flip... I hope you get a decent check, don't be afraid to complain about it if you feel it's too low, one of my friends had his corsica sideswiped by a landscape truck (while he was parked at a light), they wanted to give him $800 and he told them no way it was worth more and he ended up with like $1200.
