I'm thinking about switching to AMSOIL...currently running Motorcraft, which everyone knows is a semi-synthetic.

AMSOIL actually sold me about 10 years ago. I have an '88 Ranger, 7.5" rear. Running plain 'ol Valvoline, I'd take a 2 hour drive down the Garden State Parkway...when I stopped, I'd feel the pumpkin and it would be hot.

Switched to AMSOIL per my bosses recommendation...same trip, felt the pumpkin...and she was MAYBE luke warm. DEFINATELY, incontrovertably, a MUCH better lubricant.

My father, till this day, says synthetics are a waste of money (he never has a vehicle more than 3 years or older than 5 years, so how would he know for certain...but he's actually an extremely competent mechanic).

My '88 Ranger went 273,000 miles before the motor went...and ALL I ever ran was regular Valvoline 10W30.

I've run Valvoline MaxLife since about 70k. I'm now up to 137k and have had no problems with my motor. I may see if I can find Amsoil for my next oil change to see if there is a difference.

I have an 03 XLT, ran Mobile 1 full syn until 89k, after switching to Amsoil throughout gained 1.3 MPG.

Money wise it might be worth it considering it is one of the very few TRUE synthetics left (Mobil 1 is not TRUE synthetic anymore).

The problem is, do you really want to go through the trouble of buying it online when you can just run to a local store within 2 miles.

Mobil 1 now uses Group 3 oils instead of 4. Mobil sued Castrol for claiming that they used true synthetic when they were using group 3. Mobil lost the case and therefore decided to start using group 3 as well to cut costs.

Mobil 1 that is made in Germany is said to be true synthetic however.

I still buy Mobil 1, but I think it was a pretty bad move to do this and still market the oil the exact same. Seems like a bait and switch type move.

Similar situation...
Racing on dirt, we had a sponsor that supplied our team with a 5 gal bucket of Pennsoil Synthetic 75W90 gear lube for the quick change rearend. Generally you would change the gearing (remove 2 gears and replace with 2 different) after the heat races based on track conditions. Needless to say, the gears were rather "untouchable" when they came out.
Another racer was an Amsoil dealer and user, and he handed me one of his gears he just removed and it was lukewarm. I was very surprised.

A good synthetic is better than conventional oil. IMO it's not worth the extra money running a synthetic as the motor oil unless you do extended oil changes. But I would definitely at least run it everywhere else in your vehicle.

I've heard Mobil 1 is now a Group 3 oil instead of Group 4 but in my experience it still performs like it did before when it was a Group 4.

The cost of fuel has made synthetics worth the extra expense. The very small amount gained in mileage just about covers the cost of the better fluids. I'd call it a wash.

The real gain now is in reliability, longevity, and less labor(time). The real high dollar synthetics like Amsoil will lengthen parts life, and you save time from doing less fluid changes.

I have 9500 miles on my latest oil change in my 99 work truck. Switching to the top Amsoil oil and filter cost me about $50, but five months later the oil is still transparent and virtually full on the dipstick. Not needing oil yet and having not done oil/filter changes twice during Winter is great. The Amsoil filter is capable of filtering their best oil in normal usage for 25,000 miles(or one year).

The savings in time and oil disposals is worth the extra cost to me. Regards,

10 bucks on aldive saying Amsoil is worth it :D

As long as you plan ahead this is no problem, I ordered from their online store and two days later my full order (large box to switchover all oils/lubes/grease to AMSOIL) was at my door for a very reasonable shipping charge given the weight and size. Of course if you must have it right away just use their dealer locater to find one near you.

I'm now upping to $50 on Al...

If I need it NOW then I can just pay retail at my local independent auto parts store. It's a bit painful, since I'm a dealer, but I can do it. Look around your area at some of the independents. You might find someone who stocks it. If not, become a dealer, and talk someone into stocking it. :D I drop ship it to family members sometimes. They pay the shipping, but I can save them a bit by giving a discount.

Is there a List or something online that Tells what brands of oil are in Group II, III, and IV? I'm due for an oil change and If Mobil 1 has dropped in quality then its not going back in my engine. Is Royal Purple still group IV? Or is AMSOIL the only group IV oil left?

The best midrange quality synthetic is Pennzoil, it's the top among the local oils. That's just below the Amsoil and Royal Purple stuff. It was available at half price last year from Advance, for $2.98 a quart. I think that there are three levels where synthetic oils are coming from, and the Pennzoil is in that middle level, the other local stuff is from the bottom level.

Your kidding? The Pennzoil Synthetic oil is better than Mobil 1 despite the fact that Mobil 1 has dropped to a group III oil?

Yes the Pennzoil is one of the highest group oils, which reflects it's high price in most places.
