Pickle 2.0 - Full Width SAS/SOA 4406 swap

Hey!!! What set up did you run on yours? I haven't had a chance to sit down n re-read all of your stuff.

I was thinking about getting some custom made axle shafts with the correct bolt pattern on them, but that's gonna eat into my wheel/tire budget... :(

I usually just run a stock Explorer 8.8, with adapters to 5.5. I had narrow front D44 setup.

I would just locate a late 95, 96 F150 rear 8.8 they have VSS, so that will work fine for you. I think older years also had VSS-I'm not sure what year that started VSS on FW 8.8
If you're running FW 8.8. I would truss the rear axle. I think they can get bent rather easily.

Artec makes very nice Truss for under $200

You can also mount E150 tank, with some effort behind rear axle and have plenty of room for elec 4406, but if you can just get stock tank back a littler bit that would be easier and cheaper.

I think I may have a line on an earlier F150 axle, I'm dead set on staying full width, so narrowing isn't an option,

If I was to use a fuel tank from an E150, I'm guessing I'd need to weld a portion of 99+ tank to it to use the fuel pump/sender/etc?

I used the E-150 Pump housing, with explorer actual pump on the bottom of it.

Don't suppose you got any pictures of how you did that do you? Wondering if it'll be different for me being returnless etc...?

Si

Just got a response from Artec - with shipping the rear truss comes out at $255.25, I'm wondering if I should do one for the front too...?

It could only add beef, but I'm not sure you need it there. Also won't work well with Cast wedges. Don't rem what you ended up with front axle wise. Now if you wanted to do something cool and unique you could do a 3 link front,w panhard :)

I have bent several 8.8s explorer witdh and fw, so good investment on that. I wasn't even hard on the FW 8.8.

I love my Artec 8.8 Explorer truss I just put on my Tuff truck, I'm hoping that I won't bend the housing this year Like I did last year :)

ok, thanks...

Going back to the rear axle... could I use the 98 rear end and change to an earlier set of axle shafts with the correct bolt pattern? I've got access to late 80s early 90s stuff, I've been thinking about this all day, I was wondering if I could change the shafts to the correct pattern, get them rotors and then I've got disc brakes...

You can use pretty much in fw 8.8 you want. Before the vss it was just the abs sensor. Same hole, same sensor. My moms had a '85 bronco that would have worked.

You can not swap axle shafts. They are different lengths. It fact the pig is in a different spot, and you would still have to order custom rotors, and I have no idea where you would get those.

Expolrer disc rotors are very common. That's why Currie gets blanks and will cut what ever bolt pattern you want.

I'm telling you pre '96 axle and custom drilled rotors and your done. You use all your original disc brake stuff but the rotors of course. And no you can't redrill yor original rotors.

so, a pre 96 F150 8.8 is the same as a 98+ F150 8.8 only, it uses drums and has 5x5.5 instead of discs and 5x135s, right?

no, the differential is a different spot , but it's still a 8.8...really the only thing they share is the gears and cover.

Ok, thanks, I think I'm just gonna run with inch and a half adapters... save me a headache, cos I can find stock parts in town cheap enough

ok... I've managed to get some parts to get this thing rolling..

Firstly, Picked up an E4406...

Then I picked up a 78 Bronco Dana 44 with limited slip

So... going with 37" tires.. 4.88s or 5.13s????

Si

I've got 4.10s now with limited slip... but I'd like to get some better gas mileage out of it if poss.. so 5.13s would be the way to go?

Si

I second the 5.13 option. I wish I was wise enough to listen to others when I build my rig. I went with 4.88.

well, once I can find a brand that people recommend... and a price that fits my budget.. I'll be ordering them :D

For better wheeling or better street driven economy? ( forgive me I still do not understand how higher RPM's= higher efficiency)

I think Simon will spend more than 90% of his time daily driving this truck. My fear is the smaller pinion in the 5.13:1 gear set.

Now, please excuse me for butting in. ;)
