Well acually that's the new 8.8. ;) notice the shockmounts :p and no..It's not crap ;)
Speaking od shock mounts what are your plans for the rear? Are you going to mount them outside the frame like CG did? Or just keep them mounted like they normally are on an explorer?

Havn't got that far. :( Are thoughts were to but them outside the frame. I was going to move the springs out there, but I'm just going to run it how it is for now and move them later. I think I may try to reuse the bottom u-bolt plates, back on top, because they have the shock mounts in them. Not sure yet. I'll find out next weekend

As for today, my parents took us out for our Anniversary...Didn't get much done, more removing of brackets, fiished the axle prep for gears. Got my 44 seals replased, and worked out what to do for the rear discs.

With re-drilling the pattern, and center bore, it still looks like there is a small beval inside the parking brake housing that may prevent them from sitting flush. I may have to turn the shaft on a mill to put a small 1/4" beval to match the rotors. We'll see what the drive train place will do  .

Grinding is taking forever, so...We got a bigger grinder! :p 9 inch!

What size were you using? 4" or 7"?

couple of 4" . but the 9" goes alot faster, but it's heavy, at 15lbs. :(

Hey do you guys think these will work? U-haul of all places has them .. Says they are off a 76-79 F-series

I tried to mount outboard shocks on my rig not too long ago. Without cutting into the body I couldn't put a shock long enough to keep the flex that I currently have. I have 9" travel now, and outboard would require 13-14" travel. Without a body lift (like CG has) it would require mounting the shocks 3" through the body. I'm still thinking of doing it though . . . along with about a hundred other projects on my rig that I'll get to someday.

Steve, yes, those are correct.

Another thing to buy - get the 46 grit flap disks. They do a much better job in cleaning up the frame than a grinding disk. Less divits and other crap to clean up, while quickly removing material.

Dropped off the axles for gearing this morning ;) We'll see what they say about the Disc, if they will drill the holes....they have strength conserns

You are so right on this Tom, I never buy grinding disks anymore, just the flap disks. They take off more material and no finish sanding is needed because they grind so smooth.

Alright, so I can't the brackets from U-Haul because there a bunch of idiots and don't know what they are selling on there own website...Like we're all suprised

Anywho..I found these, thing they will work?

They changed their story because you told them they were going on an Explorer wasn't it?

I think he was right the first time, they are a bunch of idiots there. I went into a U Haul recently looking for a wiring kit to tow the Explorer behind the RV. The guy helping me was obviously drunk at noon on a Tuesday.

hmm i find it kinda funny that the other day i was reading the thread about U-haul not renting trailers to Explorer owners and here again talking about the wonderfully inept folks at U-haul :D Wonder if Steve gets that 8.8 in this weekend?

Day 5: No Axles!

Well today I find out my axles still are not ready  Which really sucks, because now work will come to a crawl.

Today we did more grinding, ion the frame. Big  to Tom about the flap disc idea. That thing works great!!! :D Got a 40 grit, and now most of the frame is like a baby's butt (pics tommorrow) ;) Tommorow, we will finish the frame and I'll finally yank the rear axle out. Other then that, I'm stuck, untill I have the axles back :( I may try to play with the steering box some. Sunday, we will take off because, they're will not be really anything to do

I have a question though? T-case? what did everyone do about the front driveshaft? The 2nd gens have that goofy joint at the case, and it dosn't look like it will go down enough (I don't mean length):( I may be stuck with no 4WD untill I change the case to a manual :(

Six!

Finised all the grinding up front, what a PITA that was, started looking at where the PS box is gonna go. Don't really have to many choices, but it should work fine. Also so got the rear axle out finally. Should get some pictures up later. ;)

Got some more parts as well this weekend.

Chevy TRE's
PS lines
7* C bushings
RA busings
Banjo Bolts for T-bird Calipers
another set of T-bird Calipers....
U-joints for 44Axle shafts

Should get the axles back before next weekend..Then we'll see some real progress. My goal is to have the rear on it's tires buy the end of next weekend :D

What's up with the T-bird calipers?

The calipers are the same size as EB or 78-79 BB but have a bigger piston inside. almost 1/4" bigger. Better stopping power, and they still use the bronco pads ;)
Came off 78 T-Bird
