Patience Grasshoppa. It's well documented that it takes a while to get these from Bob, especially in last while. You will get them, You will love them. Well worth the wait.

Those who have BROKEN bolts how did you get them out? I was preparing for the headers whenever they get here and I broke a bolt.

I got mine out by bolting in a 347

Seriously, if you cannot tap in an easy out to get it, I would pull the head and send it to a machine shop

Some guys are good enough with a torch to "blow out" a bolt, but I think this would ruin any surrounding gasket.

You broke a bolt in the head? Remember this lesson well Grasshopper... :) ...DO NOT use Loctite on any bolt going to the head!!!! Use antiseize. Once you get them tight, and retorque them a few times, they will never loosen. And if you find for some reason they do, they make bolts specifically for headers that won't loosen.

In your case however, it's probably a rusted and corroded bolt. If you can get to it, you may be able to save this yourself. If you remove the inner fender, you can usually get to most the bolts once you remove the manifold. If you have some of the bolt still showing, heat the crap out of it with a torch. Then try and back it out using a stud puller. You can also try hitting it with a good penetrating oil (not WD-40) as it cools. It will draw the oil into the corroded threads. If both those fail, and you have a good shot at is, you can drill and tap the head. You may have to Helicoil. If you can't do any of those, Jon has the only answer. It's time to pull the head. Might as well pull them both and freshen them while you're at it.

That will be saturdays mission Thank you

Headers

Fed Ex says that my headers are to show up on Tuesday 8/3/10 ! I am pumped!

I have already stripped the complete runnning gear from the 96 XL.

Now I am going to clean the under carriage and coat it.

I was thinking of using POR 15, but that stuff is over 150 a gallon.

Does anyone have experience with POR 15 or have any other ideas for coating the bottom side of my rig (other than house of Krylon/rattle cans). I will be using it for a winter vehicle in MI and they use a lot of salt here. RIght now, there is only typical curface rust (truck came from VA). Any ideas on how much I will need to cover the undercarraige?

Thanks

Congrats on the TMH. I've had mine for just over a year now, and outside of a small gasket issue for the first few months, they're all I expected and more.

I used POR15 on a rusty trailer hitch and was disappointed. I followed the instructions closely and the rust was abated for maybe a few months but started coming back. :(

Celly,

When I talked to Bob before I made an order on the header, he advised to use the Trick Flow 1" spacer for the Cobra, (apparently there is some slight modification needed for the EGR tube if the spacer is used).

I found this one at summit, is it the correct one?

That's the spacer I have on my '99. I paid a little extra from Bob for a modified EGR tube that he sent with my headers. Works like a charm.

Update.....

I have a Wi vehicle; the bolts were very challenging to get out! Heat Heat Heat the bolts well. Follow the directions take the inner wheel wells OUT. Take the advise to loosen the motor mount from the bottom!!!!! An 18mm swivel (2) 6'' extentions in 3/8" will do the trick. You need to go in from the wheel well, inbetween the two A arms theres a hole in the frame. It is the best way to put the passager side in.

Wow 21hp/35tq to the wheels???? That's pretty impressive and even higher for the 96-97 models too. Sweet. But would these numbers be even higher if you had a custom 2.5" dual exhaust and no rear cats?

I did the tmh install with this and boatbuilders thread. I bought my headers used so they didn't come with instructions. The hardest part of the install for me was using the spectre header bolts and the dpfe hoses coming off behind the engine. For some reason no wrench fit the header bolts correctly. 3/8 too small 7/16 too big?? I rounded some of the bolt heads trying to get a torque on them. I called the parts store and the guy working there had the same problem. The egr was not bad. I bent it to look like boatbuilders pic and installed it with the header loose. I didn't have any bolts holding the header in place so i could move it enough to catch a couple of threads, then tighten it down. The header can easily be moved and bolted into place with the egr hooked up. The egr took about 20 minutes to bend and install. I cleaned up the header ports a little bit shown in the pics (might help with the flow?) For the inside collector bolt i broke it loose from the top with a ratchet and then used a gearwrench. I guided the header in without taking the dipstick out. For the motor mount i couldn't get it from the bottom, but without any bolts in the header i was able to snug it by finger tips to save some time. I used the old manifold heat shield from the passenger side to protect the ac line. I attached it with one screw and bent the rest around the line(see pic). I used 100% graphite remflex gaskets.

I talked to Bob today about the collector bolt issue that some have on the passenger side. He is going to look into turning the flange for easier access to the inside bolt :)

Do members here still get a discount on them?

Yes. Just make sure you tell Bob you are a member on Explorer Forums.

Cool, thanks.

It looks like his website is not working now. :(

Might be down temporarily. I was on the site just the other day.

Site was still down, but luckily I had written his number down while it was up. I just got off the phone with him, and what a nice guy he is. I have a set in the works and hopefully have them by the end of the month. :)
