I agree. I wonder if it has anything to do with having to be close to the actual unit? Perhaps a longer antenna input cable would affect the signal to the GPS unit although I'm sure it would be shielded.In my previous vehicle (Buick Rainier) the GPS antenna was under the front dash as well. I think you will find that's a fairly common place for them to be. Although I think its a dumb place for it.
