Lets just say turning the wheel would not be a good idea. Not sure if anyone has gone over backwards on that sucker but it would not be good..

I had some "issues" getting up it, the trans pan I had installed was causing it to suck air with that steep of a climb. I had to back down 3 or 4 times and add more fluid. It was NOT FUN

Well, it does look very steep from the picture because it does look very steep for real, lol. You can look at the photo Jamie posted and the three people on top watching me come up - I think that's Char, Derrick, and ? - are only slightly leaning left, so you can tilt your computer monitor over about 5 degrees to straighten them up and that's about how steep it looks in real life :D

Jamie, you backed DOWN it?

We were watching another group, I think it was the Amigos, and one of them didn't stay on the line. She made it, but I would image she had to change her undergarment.

Char, you're both online right now... are you back to back facing away from each other on your own computers, or lovingly working side by side? :D

So what is the prefered method of getting to the top? moderate speed, or just locked and low geared?

We are limiting this run to 50 drivers If you have been procrastinating this is the time to sign up or possibly be left out.

My preferred method is to start on my knees in prayer just before trying it :)

It's kind of an instinctive thing, but you do have to actually climb it in low range - it is way too steep to get much speed/momentum up or you'd just hit it like a wall (look at the scrape marks at the bottom from drivers hitting it too hard/fast) but if you enter it too slow, you'd just spin your tires because it's so steep. I'd hate to be too slow, get halfway up, and then lose traction

Yes Gerrald I got up a little further each time then I would LOSE my gear (like slipping into N) Like I said, not fun. That aws the worst part, all of a sudden, N, engine racing, grab the brake...then the backing down.

Pop the hood, add another quart of ATF, try again. ON the 4th try with about 3 quarts too many of ATF in the pan I was getting nervous. There was a group of Jeeps coming up behind us, so now a bunch of rigs watching, and I was getting worried that I would have to turn around and head back to town. I used about twice as much gas pedal on the 4th attempt and made it up and over the crest.

The people who made my aftermarket A4LD pan obviously never thought about testing this steep of an incline, they re-designed the pan for me and I never had an issue again. Now we know why the factory 4x4 pans have a sump in them for the fluid pickup...

hahaha

it is great how others (BILL) will keep you calm when stuff like this happens, it is not the time to panic, but yes I backed down it half way 3 times, being VERY careful.....no turn-a-da-wheel and thank goodness for 4 wheel discs!

Rick, what are your plans for the weekend? Are you going to arrive Thurs nite and start full day runs on Friday morning?

I can already taste that Dead Horse at the Moab Brewery on Thursday night :chug:

Jamie, I cannot remember who they were, but I have wheeled with more than one 2nd gen Explorer driver that lost their transmission drive going up steep inclines and gotten into some real pucker situations, so it's not that uncommon. It's never happened to me (yet, knock on wood), but ever since I've seen it happen to others I've always made sure that my tranny fluid level is completely full - or a little overfilled - before hitting the trail.

I feel we should only setup 2 days worth of group runs which would be Sat and Sun. Anything more than that would be "unorganized runs"...

I would be up for something mellow on Friday. That way there's a better chance of the Pumpkin being ready to go for the next two days :D

We should be arriving in Moab right around dinner time so we'll join ya for a cold one :D

Sounds good; I don't want to get too crazy Friday either. Peter Weber used to always want to get up and watch/photo the sunrise at Dead Horse Point and I've always thought that was a neat idea - but I've always wheeled so hard that I've been too wiped out to get up early enough to do that; who knows this year....

Jamie, I just noticed that 410Fortune is NOT on the signup list (?) are you going or not?

And where are all of the Texans? I only see my brother and Gofast signed up.

I just signed up, I am going for sure, but I usually wait till the last minute, work can stop my trips......

I don't want to be anywhere at sunrise unless I camp there:eek:

Yeah, Ill probably miss it again, but I might still be on "east coast time" and my biological clock may allow me to do it the first morning before I adjust to the mountain time zone.

Perry, Ashli won't let me post a photo of her yet - she's still losing weight and wants to wait until she gets totally to her goal and new size. Right now she's attending a 6-week "boot camp" and has to work out at 5:30am and get yelled at by a former marine drill sergent. No way my body would work that early, that's for sure: and I'm not sure I'd pay someone to yell at me, lol.

I'd pay Chritsy Brinkley to yell at me on that Total Gym

When I was in our academy we had to get up at 0400 hours (that's 4:00 am to you civilians) and got yelled at for a few hours straight while doint PT. I thought it was funny because they were just wanna be Marines and would never have hacked it with a bunch of real Jarheads. It was also about a year after Full Metal Jacket came out, so they had a bunch of new material.
