MrQ's Red Flyer

Well, if it was currently 60 degrees and below 50% humidity I might take you up on that. As of now, 81 is our high with an average of 80% humidity and I am going to take it a little slower.

Anyways, I went surf fishing with my dad and brothers this morning and wound up with only three small fry for our trouble. I just finished cleaning out the Jeep and getting stuff put back up so I am pretty tired. I'll try to get some more done tomorrow. I am especially motivated now after I saw our 2wd Jeep trying to plow through soft sand, whereas two clicks and shift on Red would have put me 20 yards ahead. :D

I also apparently lost the dustcover between the engine and the tranny. I can't seem to find it anywhere!
Is it absolutely necessary?

Is this engine cover what your referring to?

Actually, when I remember helped Dan first pull his transmission, I don't remember there being a cover on the engine at all. What is the purpose of them anyway?

I believe their purpose Mike is to keep dust, dirt, mud and other crud from getting inside the bell housing, the converter, the seals and if you have it, the clutch setup. In all honesty I would rather have it. When my dad was cleaning out the garage he might have thrown it out by accident or maybe, more likely, I did, if I thought I was never going to use it again. Whatever, however, I am now in need of one. I guess a drop by the local JY will be in order as I also need some screws and such for the interior.

On another note, more progress! I finished reinstalling all the interior crap and its all good to go. All that's left is the tranny. *sigh*

Thanks for the offer gman. It is much appreciated! However, I am going to see if the junkyard has one for a couple of bucks first.

Ok found a plate at the local jy. It was all bent out of shape so I used a torch and the BFH to knock into some shape.

While I was under the truck, I decided to look at this freeze plug that had some gunk on it. I figured it had a small pinhole leak. Guess again! Once I cleaned the gunk off I had a green Niagara Falls. So, off to Autozone to pick up a new plug. I got up the rubber kind that is supposed to compress, but I was a little suspicious about it working. Surprisingly, it fit perfectly after I pulled this out:

Needless to say, I think the coolant loss problem is fixed. :D

Jesus Christ!!!!!!!

Engine gunk and rust was all that was holding that river of coolant in. I am surprised that it lasted as long as it did.

man, I am impressed that thing held back the flow. Those rubber plugs work great, I usually hit em for a couple seconds with my dewalt electric impact and call it good.

ps, I also have an auto block plate, but you seem to have that under control, lol.

In the midst of all this tranny stuff I am still working on mods for my Explorer.

This one is gonna be a bit of a doozy. Since I have on occasion driven my parents Jeep Grand Cherokee, I have found that I enjoy the shifter on the floor. I feel that Explorer's were jipped because they were give column shifters and lost the sporty-ness of a floor shifter. Well, all that's about to change on Red. Thanks Russell I am getting an Aerostar floor shifter and a full length console from a 2nd gen.

The floor shifter is a little tall (about 3 feet), but I plan on cutting it down and installing it in the center console. I feel this will bring back the sportiness of my ex, and I'll enjoy all the good things of a full length console. This is gonna be fun so watch along. When I start it I'll post up a how to if anybody's interested.

I'm glad someone can use floor shifter that is just taking up room in my garage. See, i was wanting to do the same thing, hence why i bought it, but then i installed the message center, and.now that i will be running a 5r in blue, i really cant use it now, lol. Good luck Dan and look forward to this build!

The floor shifter is going be a dang kool mod Dan! Nice thinking! :biggthump
I agree with you, the floor shifter does gives a sporty look and feeling. And duh, of course we're interested. :p:

Also, again thanks to Russell and Kris, I am getting a message center with this whole console and the shifter. So with that in mind I headed out to the jy for some parts.

I needed
-An oil level/temp sensor from a 2nd gen with a message center
-The washer fluid low sensor
-And the three connectors for the message center

BIG props out to Russell for sending me his message center wiring chart. It is incredibly helpful. I am editing it a little bit since some of the wiring/wiring colors are different for later models. Hopefully, I can convince him to let the world see it after that. :D

At the same time I picked those up I grabbed the cupholder/vent thingamajig for the console as Russell let me know that the one on it was messed up.

Hmm, this could get interesting...so, don't go away! :)

I wonder where you got this idea from...

Oh crap....

This means im goin to be helping you, doesnt it???

Just teasing bud, best of luck!!!
