I feel your pain. I also took the rig out for a run last weekend. I am hearing a god awful clanking coming from the front end. I think my upper bushings are toast, plus the pass side UBJ needs replaced. Have to wait for the weekend to work on it though.
Welcome to the forum Unclemike! Watch out for this wildman people!..LOL.!!
I pulled apart the right side - one of the bearings is bad. What I don't understand is it is a made in USA Timken with only 4000 miles on it. Oh well - wonder if AutoZone has a warranty on these???
I'll pick up some new bearings tomorrow (I normally have some on hand, but obviously didn't replace them last time I used them!) and put it together tomorrow evening. To be safe, I am going to open up and inspect the left side. Not sure if I will change them yet - at least put fresh grease in there.
Man I'm starting to feel the pressure, and its wearing me out, working non stop on my explorer. I hope to get it inspected and licensed wed. I have alot to do tommorow
I check mine every spring before I start the year. I replace them every two years regardless. And I carry an extra set of bearings and a seal. Seems them things are just too close together to hold up to 33's or larger tires. I have 44 outers on my BII so that should not be as much trouble.
I clean and repack mine every 15,000 miles - replace as necessary. 4,000 miles ago, I replaced these - the old ones weren't really bad, mostly just heat discoloration and miles.

I am in the same boat. Sold our house waiting on a new house, living at inlaws house, not having my own space and GARAGE. And I still have to put new inner axle seal in, take out my Warrior shackles, and drop my t-case to hopefully split and re-seal it. And install extra leaf spring on drivers side to get rid of the ghetto lean my truck has. I just want to wake up and have it all done
I know what you guys mean, getting ready to start school again and I need to finish my limiting straps, a skid plate on the front diff and install new front endlinks.
I have to do the upper ball joints, front diff fluid change(new gears), front brake pads, front end links, fit the spare under for road trip, & tune the CB. I have been whittling away at stuff, down to the easy wrenching now. Still sucks up my time, but it is all worth it.
Well, I will be ready, but I dont think i will have my bumpers or sliders built, thats pushing it, but Greg Im glad that day you came out, we talked about this trip and the fact that I could get my rig ready, this has been a real motivater and made me get a lot of things done. Today i drove explorer out of garage and has brakes !! yea tommorow, rear driveshaft and exhaust, other little do dads and im going to get inspected and plated, called in insurance today.
Chad-mine seems like it likes to lean to left also?? but thats prolly how its gonna have to be for this trip.
