Twin Turbo 306

Hey guys, its been a long time. I have the white explorer with a turbo sohc. If you remember from b4, I was selling all the 4.0l stuff and going with a 5.0l. A few months ago I had the 5.0l rebuilt, its now a 306 with forged aluminum wiseco pro-tru pistons, f-cam, stock E7's with 3-angle valve job, gt-40 intakes, as close as possible to being balanced and blueprinted for the money I paid. I kept the rebuild simple because its really easy to make power with a turbo on a 5.0l.

The turbos are twin t3's from mid - late 80's t-birds. I built the whole setup from scratch, right from the header flange all the way back. The headers are made from 1 5/8 stainless, the collector is 2.5" along with the rest of the exhaust, the wastegates are 38mm, and the mufflers are magnaflow. The coldside from the turbos to the intercooler is 2.5" aluminum, out of the intercooler is 3" to the tb. The planned horsepower is 450 at the wheels. Im not too worried about the block, if it splits then so be it. As for the rest of the driveline, I have a tremec TKO600 5spd trans, custom made chrome moly driveshaft, and the stock 8.8 with the tubes welded. The 8.8 still has the factory 4.10 gears and LS, when I get closer to driving I swap those out. For fuel I have a walbro 255lph pump, 42lb injectors, and professional products fuel rails. Im going to put another in line pump and change the fuel lines once I decide on what to do. I'll be using my megasquirt for engine management and probably dual widebands for tuning.

The whole truck will be different when it rolls out, custom two tone paint, full custom interior, custom body mods, and mayb 22's if everything plays out right. I'm sandblasting the whole frame + underside of truck, then i'll spray it with black epoxy primer, and probably a bed lining of some sort. I shaved every hole in the engine bay that has no purpose, deleted any wires that dont do anthing anymore, and relocated what wires I could into the inner fenders. Well I guess thats enough explaining, enjoy the pics!

I'd like to think that if you guys raced on the show you'd give each others trucks back at the end... I personally think you'd have to be a dick to potentially throw all your hard work away.

Make it a grudge match type thing, just don't tell the TV guys you'd be keeping your own stuff.

Good looking MIG welds..

I wouldn't care if I knew I had the fastest X I don't gamble my truck. Too many blood sweat and tears. If I lost it to something stupid then it would be a lot of tears.

I think that show goes against everything I believe in racing. WAY too much Fast and the Furious for me. There are occasionally some nice cars on there but just the principle behind it all is what I cannot stand. If you ever find me on an episode of Pinks you have my full authorization to take potshots at me with a high power rifle. :D

Well wait for the new season, the shooting I went to had some good racing-

I think it would be a fun thing to get going--why not-
we could all have Henson performance and KBX racing stickers on our trucks-

I mean great big stickers--

Oh some kind of an X shootout would be fine with me. I would like that.

It is just that show itself that I find repulsive. All that gayazz "How many lengths will you give me?" negotiation BS is just ridiculous. I am a heads up guy myself, none of that bracket crap. Just race already... :p:

Scruff - those are TIG welds (Rob's getting old and forgot where he put his glasses) ;) :p:

I kept the E7's because I didnt see a point in buying new heads. If I would have bought say a dart block, put thousands into the internals, built the engine to the ****, I would have different heads without a doubt. I will easily make my power goal or more if I want to with the stock E7's. Theres guys making 600WHP with a bone stock 5.0 from the tb down to the oil pan. I know its going to take more boost but thats fine with me.

Heres some close ups of my TIG welds. I know there not perfect, but keep in mind that I'm self taught with no tiging experience whatsoever.

A/C? Who needs that, all I have to do now is put the windows down and floor it.

Im also with Jah, I would never gamble with my truck either, you cant put a price on blood, sweat, and tears.

Thanks for all the comments guys, keep em coming!

Those are TIG??? Ok....I just thought they were good MIG welds. Please do not take any offense but I took a look at the welds and by the looks of them I thought they were either not so pretty TIG or pretty good MIG welds. I decided to give the benefit of the doubt. Oh well, I was wrong. psttt...don't tell the wife that I admitted that or she might try to make me start a trend of admitting that stuff.

Hey 97X: Do you use the C method or the circle method

97X, from one self taught hack TIG welder to another, they look spretty good to me.
If they were MIG I'd be really impressed.

I will be wanting a big sponsor sticked for the rod, and someone to tune it sometime...

With mig, you'd see all kinds of splatters, right?

those are actually not bad welds at all. Have you ever seen some of the ford racing headers? oh man, they really need to fire the welder.

by the way, I'll take on anyone of you guys on pinks...bring it on!!

Rob - I'll need atleast 20 lengths, what do you say?

AWRocks - I'll need 18 lengths...

James - I'll need 18 lengths too.

Justin - 18 lengths?

Jtsmith - 18 lengths?

Troll - Heads up...bring it on!

;)

Nice job 97x , looks like u have ur hands full with that project

MIG doesn't splatter too much as long as it is shielded well and you are welding a properly prepped surface. If it does splatter allot and you do not want that to stick to your surface then just spray a little PAM cooking oil on all the surfaces that you are not welding and that you do not want splatter to adhere to. Just make sure you do not get it on your welding surface.

I would probably not feel too bad giving you a damn near 1/8th mile lead; that is roughly 36 cars... If we ever race I will give you 30 and the hit. ;) BTW, that is pre-turbo for you. I will not give you anywhere near that many cars once you got the turbo on. :D

The 60 foot time is more special, I like the idea of under two seconds. Our trucks leave good when stock.

Yeah the 60' is where its at.

Exactly, my Mark VII was a 2.95 second car stock, and with no gear changes but an extra 50hp, it was still a 2.8 second car. A race is most times won in that first 60 feet, if the difference is much at all.

I agree with Scuff - not bad for self taught. A little more heat and better fitment and you will be there. Ideally, you want no gap in the joint when butt welding. Very nice fillet welds on the head flanges and the v-band clamp flanges.

I assume low carbon steel pipes? Send off to Jet Hot for the 2000 coating. Will protect from rust and keep more of the essential heat inside the tubes for those turbos!
