My new 347

It turns out my rack already had that valve in it. It was definitely worth checking.

Machine shop says I need one intake valve. Id say that I'm a lucky guy. lol Imagine that.

I asked Flowtech about going linkbar lifter, and he emailed back and said he can't say for sure, but the Morel's are made in the USA and have better quality control.

Since we can justify anything to ourselves, I justified the linkbar lifters by saying I wasn't buying all those valves anymore. Hows that for pathetic? Anyway, hopefully one less thing to go horribly wrong (even though I'd have been ok anyway).

Ed's throwing in the valve. He says he has a few slightly used valves around. He will clean one up and send it with the order so I'll have a match for my other slightly used valves.

I can hear something rattling in the block when I turn it on the stand. I'll bet that its lifter pieces (Since I have yet to see all the bits). The block goes to the machine shop tomorrow in the Honda crv. :(

what is wrong with the one intake valve and does it belong to the broken lifter?

Edit
I can see how a bent valve could break a lifter, but I do not see how a broken lifter can damage a valve.

rocker arm roller tip drag can bend a valve.

When the broken rocker wedged and stopped the cam from moving, the cam timing gear broke loose from the cam, then the valve train was moving at different timing than the pistons.

Then, the risk was that a valve would be fully open (or almost fully open) with a piston moving up to top dead center.

Intake valve, meet Mr. piston
Mr. piston won.

Dang, so sorry to hear about all the issues:banghead:

Performance stuff sure can be challenging.

Yea, I'm lucky Tim is here to help keep me motivated.
I'd have thrown in the towel on my own, that's for sure

I have to say, Ive had enough of screwing with ****. If I can just make what I have work, I'm done. Tweaking is fine (and fun), but this is ridiculous.

No problem at all, it only took a few minutes to check.
I do have a spare valve now though. :)

My block is at the machine shop.
I spoke with the machinist for a while.
Interesting thing came out of it. He hates EGR. He was showing me what intake valves look like (black build up on the stem). So, I guess I'll make sure I back egr off in the tune rather than have it almost full on at low rpm/load conditions.

Egr

EGR's do ****ty up the intake and back of the intake valves.
The late model engines that have egr run for many miles and years still.
I wonder how much, water methanol reduces those egr deposits?
EGR's increase fuel mileage and lower emissions. Most people only care about one of those.

Glad to see that on newer vehicles they are using variable camshaft timing instead of egr. At least VCT is not such a dirty system.

I bet water/meth would help that. I know it pretty much removes carbon deposits on the pistons. That makes it worth while on its own.
I have a snow performance unit I removed from my M90 explorer to install this summer on my V8 (If I ever get my motor working long enough).

Ouch Don, I didn't know the engine had another thing happen. I've been away/busy etc.

I hope you have more luck again next time, and that you see reducing the EGR function helping. I'm going to take that out of my system when I get that far(boost).

Fingers crossed, get it together again slowly, and do it again.

Parts showed up. Happy dance.

Morel linkbar lifters, custom cam from Ed Curtis, timing chain and gears, etc.

Ed's really curious how the cam will work out for me. He says my combo is anything but typical. Lets see 4700lb truck with a serious exhaust restricting rear mount turbo that I want to spool as fast as possible but not sacrifice top end. No small challenge.

So, the cam has a rough range of 2200-6000rpm, total lift of .58x and asymmetrical lobes. It also has an LSA of 115 to minimize exhaust reversion.
My comp cam had total lift of about .54, and a resulting LSA of 114.
Without going in to great detail, this new cam will make better use of the springs on my new aluminium heads. I'm super curious how this cam will work also. I'm having the machine shop degree the cam for me. There is clear instructions with the cam on how to degree it (Must be done a specific way due to the cam lobes being asymmetrical), so I'm sure they will be ok with it.

I'm going to take it easy and not rush putting this motor together. While the issues I'm having seem like total bad luck, I really don't believe in bad luck. There has to be a reason. So, I'll go slow putting the motor back together. I just don't know how stuff keeps breaking on me that just shouldn't break.

Good to hear, and I think Ed Curtis knows a ton about what is needed for different combinations.

As for the issues, that's a shake your head and wonder thing. Gremlins or Murphy's Law come to mind. Keep going, you will get it right eventually.

Lol. I think the main thing I have learned is not to screw with your daily driver. It hasn't been so daily all year. We have gotten by, but not without some complaining (I use the term lightly) from the family trying to juggle getting everyone where they need to be and back in a day.

Things became quieter when I said I'd love to get a new vehicle, but the money would need to come from some where. Then I suggested to the kids they could pay rent. Every one scattered.

Imagine that.

This is the key thing to note here. I know I had those same words with my old 347 Explorer. If you have space, money and time to have more than one vehicle then you can have the best of both worlds.
