2000 5.0 sas question

Just picked up a wrecked 2000 5.0 mountaineer for cheap. Going to swap in a Dana 44/60 combo I already have from another project. It's going to be an off-road only vehicle so i don't care about abs and speedo.

My question comes to the trans and shifting. I know the vss runs through the abs stuff in order for it to shift properly. Since I'll be removing all that. How can I get it to work?

I've searched and searched and seems everyone is using 8.8s that use the vss. I'm using the axles I already have.

VSS is in the transfer case. Not shared with the rear ABS sensor.

I believe the 98+ vss is on top of the rear axle, pre 98 it was in the case. I have a 2000.

Correct, 98-up use the rear diff abs sensor for vss also.

If you want the transmission to shift properly, even with a stand alone transmission controller you will need a vss, or some sort of speed input. For this reason I would use the 8.8 you already have with the d44 in front. If you need full width you could use spacers with wheel bolt pattern adapters. Bonus will be disc brakes in rear and more time to spend up front.
