Pugly

Good for you Gregg, nice oops story. I'm on the clock with my rear pinion bearings screaming no more. I have nursed the truck while I try to get over being sick, enough to tear down my Mountaineer for the rear end. So I don't see it lasting another week, so I'm hoping to get it swapped today and tomorrow. We've had lots of rain too, but the temps have been hot for weeks now. It's 38* this morning, I'm heading out soon to get to yanking parts.

Did you try to jumper the starter solenoid with a screwdriver?
It could just be connections at the fender mounted solenoid

Glad the meat made it home safely!!
My bronco ii is just like that.. the one time it actually died and would not re start.. leaving me stranded way far from home (this is way before uber lol) luckily my friends came to get me and after waiting about a couple of hours … and the bronco fired up and drove home. Later I would learn it was the boost pump in the fuel tank failing. 1988 bii had two fuel pump…. She has never left me stranded! She has always limped home. The only time i had to leave her overnite was because I got her stuck lol
so now I have plates that say neverstuck

When 4wheeling far from home with an auto transmission I carry a spare starter

I also won’t buy a reman starter or alternator they are garbage

If beating on the starter didn't work, the solenoid jump was next on the panic list.

I do believe Pugly has an O'Rielys house brand lifetime starter. I can't remember if it is a reman or new. That info is most likely buried somewhere in this thread. 🤓

I don't bring a spare starter, but I carry a spare Fuel pump. 🤣

Yes, I'm happy for my meat too. That doesn't sound right..... But thanks! 🐮

Sorry to hear about being sick and about your rear axle. The 8.8 gave up the ghost on this rig, when the R&P spat out some teeth. Hope you got a helper for that job.

Gregg -

Great to see you updating your threads again, enjoy your posts - - always a good read.
I have been adding to the Bank of Karma as much as I can, and in this situation, I think it helped. It could have been a lot more costly.
Truer words never spoken, as a recipient of your goodwill - - (and perhaps questionable hoarding, LOL). . .

Whole lot of "meat" referenced on the site over the last few days. . .
Real superstar is Gregg, who upgraded his Atlas II and kept the old 25 spline shaft, retention ring, etc. to save my bacon. . . He's got a payday coming. . .

Glad the meat made it home safely!!

Yes, I'm happy for my meat too. That doesn't sound right..... But thanks! 🐮

When all is said and done, when you only have a hammer - - everything is a nail. . . .
Moral of the story is to always carry a hammer, as a jump pack doesn't always solve things, when you're all you got.

Hoping it's an easy fix. . . and just want to relay my thanks to you for helping me out with my Atlas II conundrum. . .

Paul

@Paul That made my day! Super thoughtful post. Thank you, and your welcome.

It's a tough world and we're all just trying our best to get by. I know I couldn't do it all alone, and I'm a lucky man to have all of you here, to help when I need it. I will always do what I can for others. It's just what we do here.

Looking forward to seeing your amazing rig back in action!! 🤘

Well, that dang ole starter kept giving me fits, so I replaced it over the weekend with a brand new one from O'reckit. Was only $50 more than a reman. I mean if they only replace whats bad with the core return, that means a lot of it is old AF. Even tho they can be had with a lifetime replacement warranty, doesn't mean I won't be back under the rig, or it being towed off on a flatbed wrecker sooner than later.

After taking me 2.5 hours to change it, I'm happy with the choice of a new one. I did find out that getting up & down from under the rig a lot, isn't anything I like anymore. 🤣

I agree about new vs. reman. However the last one I installed was a reman motorcraft. I did have to warranty swap it recently but it was when my truck was low on compression and starting really hard so I don’t really blame the starter motor.

I don’t really have any proof that motorcraft starters ( though I do have proof on other parts) are better than the parts store stuff. I am not a fan of the parts store thing where you don’t know what china brands are in the box/ because they all say “duralast gold”.

What really sucks these days is that motorcraft isn’t available any longer for our trucks most of the time! I am sure your new one will last a long time. On starters and stuff I have seen that sometimes delco brand parts are on rock auto. Which is gm oem stuff so ought to be good? I have bought some of that stuff. Just installed a delco alternator.

I looked for a Motorcraft first, and only found a reman. I was about to throw it in the cart, but checked out the new ones instead. I'm like you, and prefer the OME stuff if I can get it, but I don't even trust that anymore after my brand new Motorcraft waterpump was made in China. That's when I found out about all the fake Motorcraft boxing, of cheap parts was happening.

I did see the ACDelco parts on Rock Auto, and looked them up out of curiosity. They are GM's aftermarket division, and a lot of it is also Chinese made parts. 🤣

Hot take: We need to bring back factories, and jobs for Americans making parts made in the USA, for vehicles made in the USA. I will gladly pay more too.

Ditto all of that. My last bad starter I rounded up my two spares and had all three rebuilt. That was around 2018 I think, and then the prices had gone up. It was close to $60 each then to rebuild them.

Reman starters and alternators last exactly one week past the warranty period
Lmfao
I hate it, absolutely hate it, when reman is the only option

Pugly is acting up again, and this time I don't know why. It's got me stumped.

I stood outside and leaned over to start it. As soon as it fired up, I slipped and turned the key back and shut it off. It ran for less than a second.
Went to start it again, and it wouldn't fire. It turned over and over and over, but no fire. Hmmm.....

Let it sit a spell, tried again, nope. Same thing.

Checked every fuse under the dash, and in the PDB under the hood. All good.

Checked the fuel pump cut off switch. All good.

Disconnected the battery for 30 mins. Nope, still no fire, just crank.

I haven't tried the Code reader yet, but will in the morning. I was just frustrated at this point, and walked away from it. Cel was already on for a dumb EGR code.

I didn't think to listen for the fuel pump to prime either. I need a hand for that one, as this pump is stupid quiet. I need an ear back there closer to it.

It's always Something with these Rigs!

Make sure the small cable on the negative terminal is connected well. I had an older Ford that would crank but not start when that cable was loose.

It fired and ran, then I shut it off. I also disconnected the battery with the Negative cable, and it was tight removing, and installed tight again.

I guess I would check spark too. Idk if the turning on and shutting right back off has anything to do with anything- I don’t see why a fuel pump or a spark would have anything to do with that. Maybe it was flooded since it started for a minute? Was rich to start and when you went to do it again it was over fueled? Doesn’t make sense for a fuel injection system- but I would probably try starting it wide open throttle. When mine was acting up due to compression issues I tested a lot of stuff and it ended up being the simple compression test that was recommended at the beginning that I skipped which finally cracked the case.

Fuel pump is first suspect,
Could just be corrosion on a fuse or relay or the pump just went out hahahahahahahaha not fun

Have a fuel rail pressure tester?

Also the check engine light should come on with the key and go off as soon as the engine starts to rotate w the starter. This tells you the pcm is powered up and getting a signal from the crank sensor

If the fuel pump is coming on and the cel goes off with the starter then I would pull a plug and check for wetness/ fouling and then check for spark
