September Big Bear run

Great Job

Bob,

You did a great job with the site you put together. Maybe you can help document our next big run with your programming skills!

It's getting close and I need to find a place to set up camp. Any ideas? Should I just look for an RV park in Fawnskin???

This is a site the U.S. Forest service is using to book sites all over the U.S.
https://www.reserveusa.com/servlet/LoginServlet
you have to create a user profile but it is free and they don't send you spam or anything. But if you have a map of the area, you can input the data and it will let you know if the camp ground is open, and what the costs are. You can even make online reservations.

Or you can get a WIlderness Pass for the weekend, and rough it..

Anyway hope this helps

This place jas opening for that weekend hand they are group sites.
HEART BAR CAMPGROUND
I think Ken Cooke knows about this place too.

Location, location, location

Bob,
I would stay away from Heartbar from now on due to the poor location to all of the action. Sure, they have great group sites, and everything there is trailer-accessible, but we would be traveling a minimum of 20 minutes to all of the action on the mountain. A location like Fawnskin would be much more trail-friendly for our group. We'll probably want to air-down once that weekend, and driving at highway speeds will present a problem for the majority of us. So, having a campground in or around the Fawnskin or Big Bear Lake area would be optimal for us as a group. Do you know of any good campgrounds near the Lake or Fawnskin???

Ken I have checked and was told that Grays Peak, Ironwood and Juniper Meadows were available as of 8/30/02. The Forest Service recommended Juniper Meadows, but it's near Onyx Summit, 20 minutes or so from Fawnskin. I tried to make tentative reservations for 10 people/5 vehicles but was told it would cost me $109.00…and I can't afford to take that kind of financial risk. I was told that all of the group sites could easily hold more than 10 people and 5 vehicles, and they have water, bathrooms, picnic tables and fires rings, but no showers. I believe the park across the street from the Discovery Center will let you use their showers, but charge a fee...
Grays Peak as of right now is available, and it is the nearest group site to the off road trails, and Fawnskin.

The Discovery Center told me to call (1-877 444-6777), which turned out to be the U.S. Forest Service. They told me a few of the sites where open, and then gave me the URL below to make things easier.
http://www.reserveusa.com/
I was told it was easy and fast to make reservations from this site.
The site will give you a list of National and State Parks, including single and group campsites

The last resort is the wilderness pass and roughing it. Or have everyone get together and resolve the money issue ASAP.

Or you could take your chances and see if any of the group sites are available when you come up the hill, but that's about all I can tell you at this point. Both the Discovery Center and the Ranger station on the way up the hill can tell you what's available, and make reservations for you then.

If you need I will check and see which group campgrounds are still available when the money issue is resolved.

Grays Peak has

1.Bbq Grills (1)
2.Fire Rings (3)
3.Pit Toilet (1)
4.Table (3 Tables)

$79 Motel Rooms or Campsites???

Okay, what will it be? Does everyone want to stay at a campsite? If so, we need to vote on one soon, and put our $$ on the table. Grays Peak sounds like a winner for an overnight stay. OR, we could block off rooms at a selected Motel - but, we'll need to set up our reservations on our own. So, what will it be a Motel Room or reservations at a campground?

I really have nothing to gain with this but if you have 5 or more going you can save more than few bucks. So please take this in the right spirit, I'm just trying to be helpful. The below site explains how many people can stay at the camp ground, which is 40. The number of parking places the site has 8 with a depth of 35 feet. By the way each site has it's own group price, so the price may be more or less than I had qouted.
The first link below is a menu of sites in Ca. and is the long one. If you have a map of the Big Bear area you'll be able to find several group campsites. By the way the number for the Discovery Center is 909-866-3437
The second is about Grays Peak itself; the third link is a list of the amenities. The fourth is information that is already listed above.

I am now out of the picture since I live up here. But my wife and I do wish you all have a good time.

i think im free on the 14-15th, if i am i would love to join you guys.

Gray's Peak camp looks good to me, too. I can't afford a motel, and not keen on wilderness camping up there.

I think now is the time to figure out who is going, so we can put in a res on this or some other place.

Bob, aren't there some private-owned campgrounds up there? Your links only show park service type places. I did a search and came up empty.

Hi Bill since the majority of the wheeling is going to be the most difficult trails it would probably be too much for my X so I'll probably pass this time.
But I will try to find a campground that has some openings for that weekend. The forest service uses something like vendors these days for most of their campgrounds up here.
But I can check for private campgrounds and Forest service single campgrounds and dates available. Then you and who ever is interested can make reservations over the phone with a credit card or debit card I believe. I'll double check that tomorrow too. The one site I know you were most interested in is sold out for that weekend though, and it is a pity because it is one of the best sites up here in all respects.

Pineknott on the south side of the lake has opening it is very close to Big Bear Village, and Moon Ridge. The price is $18.00 a night, and the sites are pretty basic, but they have 9 open spots, most have an open space next to them so that might be something to consider.

Hanna Flats is open

Good News Hanna Flats has 21 sites available as of this evening and is near Fawnskin. Many have two or more sites next to each other and have shade.

For Ken and Bill I believe we passed this one before we reached the Holcomb Valley un-improved campgroud.

http://www.ReserveUSA.com/servlet/CalendarServlet?agency=NRRS&park=532&map=3355&type=site

The site is cost is $17.00 a night with a two night minimum and has the following amenities
Some of the sites have RV access. Each site limits 8 people but only one you can get them to let more than one car into each space, but it's $5.00 for each additional vehicle.

Rick the following might be helpful to you if you decide on Hannah Flats

http://www.ReserveUSA.com/nrrs/ca/hann/

Fire Rings (At Each Site)
Flush Toilet (out of service due to drought)
Paved Roads
Table (At Each Site)
Trash Service
Vault Toilet
Water

Sorry to do this, but Rick and I are now going to Los Coyotes the 14-15th, instead of Big Bear. Everyone is welcome to join us.

what, not going to start a new thread?

For those who may still be interested in the Big Bear run you can make reservations for Hanna Flats with the Forest Service at 1-877 444-6777. You can also call the Discovery Center at 909-866-3437. I think they can make reservations there too, but I am not sure. I would be interested in seeing how many are still interested in going. The trip was to be informal and open to all as far as I know. We were hoping that enough people would show up so there could be a variety of runs for different skill levels and vehicle capabilities.

Big Bear Run modifications

Since Rick won't be driving out from Arizona, we can consider making this a 1-day run, and dropping the campground confusion. I'll still be meeting up with everyone who is interested at 10 a.m. across the street from the Fawnskin Fire Dept. and we'll go from there!
