Hey Brian, the John Bull trail was a lotta fun. I need to go with you guys though cause after one trail most of my buddies are ready to call it a day and crack a few cold ones. I wanted to do Holcomb and/or Deep Creek after that.
Joe - here are a few pics of our trip nearly 1 month ago. These trails are great fun aren't they!?!
I'll definitely post here when I plan to go next, I am hoping in early June. And if anyone is going up before that let us know. I may be able to get away for a day.
The wife, kid and our dogs are going to BB the last weekend of this month (I think its memorial day) for a quiet, relaxing campout. My wife wants to spend one day wheelin' and one day hanging out around the camp watching the wind blow through the trees. We will be at the same spot as last time if no one beats us to it. Let me know if anybody wants to come up for a day and we can wheel a few moderate trails. Deep creek might still be closed, so we can do Holcomb Creek or???
It was pretty good. Got there Saturday around 11am, no one was at my favorite spot, set up camp and hung out for the day. Sunday went wheelin, driving all through Holcomb Valley and went to check out John Bull. Several groups on it so we ran it solo, figuring if something happened, we could get help from one of them. It was really rough compaired to April's run. Ran it with no problems.
We were back at camp by 4pm, just in time to have a group of about ten people show up in two POS vehicles. They drove up to where we were, made a u-turn and camped about 75 feet away; kids running around crying, Dads yelling at the kids, Moms yelling at the dads, bearded Grampa laughing at all of the above, you get the picture. No more peace and quiet. And..my dogs were barking at them non-stop for the first hour. I couldn't believe they would camp so close with the whole mountain to camp in, what a bunch of losers. We left first thing in the morning, right after breakfast. Drove out through 3N16 to Green Valley where I bent the trailer's left side bumper back on a submerged rock driving through the stream crossing (that thing stuck out too far anyway, cut the ends off when I got home). At home I noticed my steering box is leaking out of the top pretty bad and two of my Superrunner steering system's bushings were blown. I bought a new steering box last year with a lifetime warranty so its back to the parts store with a return.
It's old news (last April) and not really that impressive (and no sound) but here is the video of Jefe breaking his steering knuckle in Big Bear. You can see him backing up the boulder turning the steering wheel but the wheels do not move.
