SoCal Winter '08-'09 discussion thread

Here's my effort to be a little less spontaneous this year, and try to break my habit of planning runs with only 24-48 hours of notice. Plus I thought it might be a good idea to have a centralized place for discussing dates for some of my local day trips/runs.

Fire season's over Nov. 22nd, and I should roll into my winter schedule shortly afterwards. As of right now I'll have Sun.-Tues. off, with the week of Dec. 7-13 as my tentative winter vacation.

I'm looking to average somewhere around 2 runs a month starting in Dec., and short of any catastrophic breakdowns believe that it should be easily doable. I'm not looking to include the larger annual events in here so that they won't get all cluttered up.

Runs that I'd like to do include:

-Big Bear / Lake Arrowhead
-Victorville / Barstow (Stoddard Valley)
-Rattlesnake canyon
-Mojave Rd.
-Cleghorn
-Lytle Creek?
-Calico?
-Joshua Tree NP?

Any thoughts???

I would like to do Mojave rd. I would also like to do a trip to the hammers. I know alot of the guys aren't built enough but a few of us are and there is other stuff up there that can be fun as well.

As far as dates due to my work It is hard to plan much more then a week or so in advance.

... Brian1 Is Working On Setting Up A Mojave Trail/ Calico Run...

Yeah I have been thinking about it. Im not sure when a good time is for me to make it out there and avoid bad winter conditions between here and there and avoid hot conditions in the Mojave Desert. I definately want to make a Mojave and Calico combined trip early in '09 if my schedule permits. I will be graduating in December and currently do not have a job lined up.

Just avoid going through Flagstaff and you'll be alright:p: If this run comes about, hopefully I'll be able to run with you guys.

I'd like to try and make some if not all of the runs Boomer12 listed.

...Might I add, Happy Birthday Boomer12...:chug:

Thanks Ted...:)

So I've been looking over on dirtopia.com and located a couple of trails in Stoddard Valley that I'd like to check out, Achy Breaky & Pumpkin Eater. There isn't any real info on either, so I might try and do a sudo pre-run next Sun. :dunno:

Crap! I knew there was something that I was forgetting.

I have to work on both Friday and Saturday, but should be able to swing down on Sunday to see what all is going on.

I guess the pre-run will just have to wait until Monday.

I went out armed with GPS coordinates today and found Pumpkin Eater. It definitely looks like it could be some fun. Located just Northwest of Slash X (near Barstow), it's relatively short (maybe a mile) in length, with a nice 5-6' waterfall and lots of rocks that made my 34's look small. It runs up a relatively tight canyon, but there's some ability to bypass around the hardest spots. Once at the top it looks like you would run a two track loop back down to the start.

With some creative driving/spotting it may be doable by a semi-modified truck.

I can't wait to go back and try it!!!

Note: Pictures never due the area justice...

I can't judge the size of those rocks (esp on the first pic) but man, that looks delicioso!

Pre-winter check in.

I'm interested in Stoddard Valley, Calico, Rattlesnake canyon and Joshua Tree. Maybe even Mojave road. Probably not anything quite as bumpy as Pumpkin Eater until I get rather a bit higher than 32's, but I can always park and shoot photos through the rough stuff if it's a loop.

Really want to get in on a Snow Run in Big Bear like Colin said:thumbsup: and I'd like to make a trip back to Calico, but it's gets Hella Cold there at night:(

GeoStash

I didn't think that this was worth a whole new thread, so here it is.

For any one who isn't down at T-Haven and can get there first, there is suppose to be a marker good for some Master craft seats. Unforunetly I have to work today, but hopefully someone from here can find it. The GPS coordinates put it about 2.5 to 3 miles in on the John Bull trail in Big Bear.

GPS coords:
34*19.375N
116*53.227W

Updates and info on the contest:

Thanks to Brain1 & Tbars for sharing.

Glad someone bumped this thread since i am not paying attention lately.

Even tho it looks like no one is interested a warm up run on Cleghorn?

Don't worry, I'll try to get something together in the next couple of weeks.

Cleghorn would be good, but I really want to go look at the Bullfrog in Lucerne Valley.

Stay tuned...:D

Sounds good.

Not to be picky or anything but should'nt the title of this thread read Winter '09? since most of the runs involved here are gonna happening next year?
