So when are we considered modified

I have replaced enough bolt on parts that I am starting to wonder when she is a modified 97. Only parts I consider modified are the headlights, air intake and the bigger tires.

That is a good question. I'm modified but not in a 4x4 sense. I've modified so much that my wallet and brain sometimes hurt.

I've certainly modified my wallet.....

IMO modded to me is when its enough that its noticibly not stock, ie bigger tires, exhaust, etc. so maybe not a stereo, but bumpers, tires, those things imo.

Bullbar, running boards, floor mats, cargo mat, DVD headrest, wheels, tires, stereo upgrade, headlights, mud flaps, torsion twist, lift kits, engine swap, transmission swap.” But I like Fix4Dirt’s phrase ‘noticeably not stock.
My Ranger became nonstock with a body lift, grill guard and mud tires. That was phase 1.

Now in the case of my wife's '97 4.0 SOHC, I wouldn't consider hers modified even though I modified it just a little bit when I installed manual tensioners in place of the factory hydraulic tensioners. I'll call that an upgrade, or I upgraded the engine, a bit.

I would think modified would be dependent on the thread's subject. If you have a heavily modified Explorer with factory headlights and you start a thread about headlights, it should be in the stock forums.

I would consider a vehicle modified when whatever not stock things the owner did makes it work significantly better. It would have to be multiple modifications for me to consider it modified. Torsion twists, Intakes, tires, bumpers, etc., by themselves; not modified. All of those together; modified. Any major suspension or engine modification; modified.

That depends upon what the goal was. My Explorer is modified for off road, which makes it OK on pavement. Nearly everything I have done to it makes it perform or more useful while in an off road environment. Others are modified for street performance, which would make them suck in the dirt.

You're considered modified when the topic is about something substantially different than the stock configuration.

For example if you're lifted and have a GM engine in it but are talking about a faulty window motor, your topic is stock. If you're going to replace the window motor with a wheel that has hamsters running on it to move the window, then it's modified.

I would say like 3-4 major changes and your “modded”
Change Dana 28 out for a Dana 35 and use the Dana 44 ball joints and 95-97 dual piston ranger calipers boom one major mod done

Change the ol 1988 seats out for some from a 01 Eddie and add the power and heat functions Blamo major mod number 2

Ditch the factory everything else for updated stuff w cameras and led lights maybe actually hand Build a new radio bezel or center console w gauges….Blamo major mod 3 now your getting modified and approaching custom

To Me just bolting on a spacer lift and having the windows tinted and some subs installed…maybe some cool side graphics on the paint… that stuff is cool! But I don’t think that classifies a vehicle as “custom”

Any wrench monkey with a Autozone pep boys reward card can bolt on curb feelers and some chrome cold air kit those are
Just bolt on mods… it can still easily be returned to stock it’s not customized
