Whats In A Name?

It was hot humid august night. The winds have all but vanished. I was doing my best to keep the sweat out of my eyes. The A/C was dying in my 94 Explorer, lovingly named "Pugly", and there was no relief in sight. I decided it was time to stop throwing good money into bad. I was gonna do the unthinkable,.......I was going to commit the most heinous crime of them all! I was going to trade Pugly in for a newer model! Oh the heart break! The insanity of it all! I couldn't believe the thoughts were even going through my head.

I managed to get the old girl back home, to her resting place. She seemed at ease in her familiar surroundings. I had to come up with an explanation to let her know of my evil plan. So i just gave her that old wink and grin that she likes to see from me as we made it back home from another day of adventure in the treacherous Midwestern terrain. I did my best in hiding my cynical thoughts, as I walked around to her rear flank and gave her that little pat on her bumper, as I always have when we part for the night.

The next morning I gave her a real good bath, cleaned behind her mirrors, and brushed her grill. She still looked pretty good for her age. Oh sure she had the tell tale signs, gravity has got its firm grip on her, and I am not the best cosmetics guy in the world. she didn't seem to mind too much, she still kept her nose up and drove with pride.

After looking at many vehicles I just could not find anything that had the same feel as my old girl. Then it happened! Was I seeing a mirage? Was I so desperate to find another rig that I was blinded by insanity? I found my replacement! I quickly made a sale with the owner, and brought it home.

When I pulled in the driveway, my heart sunk as I looked into the yard to see my 94 looking at me in disbelief. She was sunning herself in the grass looking all shiny and then, she just looked away from me. My heart was tearing in two. I parked the new rig, and walked up to her and gave her a soft spoken "Hello". No reply. I tried to tickle her mirrors, no response. The tension was so great, you could have cut it with a 32 count fine tooth hacksaw. I had to explain to her that she gave me great satisfaction for many years, and we made a terrific team together, but the time has come for her to just relax and enjoy her final days. She finally revved up, and understood, her days as my work horse has ended (so we thought).

I introduced her to her daily driver replacement. The shiny new(er) next generation of her kind. The 95 Explorer XLT. She warmed right up to it. Before you know it they were swapping stories. Now I had to ask her for help. I needed a name for the new ride,
so I went to find her, and what did I see? Those two were grill to grill in the driveway. rubbing chrome! I had to get the water hose out and break them up! Sheesh, she was acting like a girl at the prom dance! I let the name thing drop for awhile.

The new(er) Ex needed to get its shots, and a physical. When I got the word on it's health, I about had a coronary. "What do you mean Doc"! I yelled. "Your kidding right"? I asked. The Doc just shook his head and gathered his tools. As he walked away, He said it had a 50/50 chance of survival. My stomach knotted up, my teeth ground, my heart raced, and I could feel the energy build up as I let it all out, "Why! Why! Why did this have to happen"! I screamed.

The prognostic exam from the doc was as such. It had a blown steering rack, the shocks were gone, the brakes were non existent, front sway bar was cracked in half, the 3rd brake light was out, none of the windows or the moon roof would work, the door locks were broke, the rear end LS clutch pack was burned up, the tires were all in need of replacement, the spare was a Firestone recall and flat, the engine had a nasty tick to it, the TPS was shot, the MAF was corroded, the battery had a dead cell in it, the hood shocks were not working, the rear hatch lock was jammed up and you couldn't open it with out a key in the lock, The carpet was stained to no repair, the rear window wiper didn't want to work, and we could not tell what year its engine swap came from. it was a mess, to say the least.

I went in the house to get my gun. I was gonna just put it out of its misery right there and then. I suddenly realized I was out of ammo, from shooting at the jeep that was in my field. I went to the computer to find a place to buy some cheap ammo, and I stumbled across this website, explorerforum.com that said it could heal any ford Explorer no matter what the problems were! I jumped for joy, I could not believe the things I was reading! I wore out the search button, asked a bunch of questions. I quickly broke out my pen and paper, feverishly writing down things as I was learning! I had found a cure for everything that was wrong with my new transport. It was a Godsend, an angel from the SUV heavens!

I sprung into action. I worked day and night, Pugly was right by my side the entire time, helping me in any way she could. I never seen this side of her, and was really amazed at how well she handled the pressure. She gently squeegeed the sweat out off my fore head with her soft wiper blades as I worked away. After an entire weekend of work, I collapsed. I needed some rest, and so did the 95. The sun crested over the hills, and awoke me to a new day. I shuffled my feet to the window facing the driveway, peeled the drapes gently back, and peered out at the 95. WOW!
It had a its color back, and was looking great! Now as the time went on, (and most of my paychecks), and the selling of almost everything I own, for funds to get the 95 to its former glory.

After some time to reflect on this name thing, I strolled up and whispered into Pugly's passenger side mirror, and she giggled with delight.

I climbed up onto the front bumper in my pajamas and robe half opened, with a cup of coffee in one hand and the daily newspaper in the other, I raised my arms with out stretched hands and proclaimed the new name of the 95.

BEHOLD...........THE BLACK HOLE!!!!!!!! (Then the neighbor yelled at me to close my robe)

The End................(or is it just the beginning?)

Actually, only some of this really happened. :D

Doc took me off bed rest yesterday. Said I am on track for the time period. Informed me this was a major attack, and my younger age is what saved me. Also said it took about 10 years of stress to make it happen. He removed 20 small veins my heart grew to bypass the blockage in the vein that supplied O2 to my heart. I guess I was the talk of the Er that day, and everyone wanted to see the pictures. lol

I can now begin to walk around and build my strength back slowly. In 2 weeks I can start minimal low impact cardio workouts.

@KurtECV brought me a stationary exercise bike to help with that. Plan on using that until the wheel falls off. Being alone, and stuck at home, that meant a lot to me. He doesn't live near at all, and a few hours drive. Thanks Kurt! 💪

3 months of time has been given to change things up physically, and then back on the table I go for a fluoroscope and dye inspection of the stints.

My game plan is to be able to get back to work on this rig asap, health willing. I have not given it up mentally just yet. Time will tell. Today is my first day back on the job, but only in light duty part time capacity.

good to hear!!! Got rid of the nasty bypass veins and fixed you up good I am sure, surgeons are awesome!!
Surgeons actually fix people where doctors just "practice medicine" and treat symptoms

Now you can get on that bike and start getting back your strength
Good to have friends!!!!
Take care we are pulling for you, here is to a future of more "stress free" life!!

glad to hear youre on the way to recovery! keep it up!

I seen that Rockauto had dropped the prices drastically on TrakMotive extended travel CVs, and ordered a set. They have been waiting to go in, when I started the other lca work.

Well, that's going to wait even longer now. Been in the hospital recovering from a few surgeries due to a major heart attack. Hopefully get to go home soon and start a brand new to me lifestyle.

What that entails for this rig, is yet to be determined. Stay tuned!
Just read this, hope you're recovering well! And being patient with your progress.

Thanks guys. Deeply appreciated!

Patience has grown as I aged on some things, and shorter on others.

Me sitting idle, is not natural. I am always doing something, so this part is turning out the hardest for me to cope with. I have so many projects to do still, and work has been piling up on me since this happened. Company I work for is understanding, but at the same time, Need stuff done, and I'm not about to let them replace me. I have been working on the phone and PC since released from the hospital to be as useful as possible.

Since I was released from bed rest yesterday, and told I can walk around some, I actually went out into the field for half a day, and spent time on a couple of my jobs in progress. Went and got some measurements on a home that caught fire, from a big ole RV's propane freezer exploding. That was enough fun for one day! lol

I have to hire a lawn company to come cut my grass. That hurts mentally, as I want to do harder stuff, but knowing I can't mow, tells me I can't wrench/Fab. Sigh....

One thing that I am looking forward to, is a out of state Rock Concert next week with an out of state friend. Be good to get away for a couple of days. I need a change of scenery!
The Warning, The Pretty Reckless, and Halestorm, is what Dr Gman has prescribed me!! 🤘🤓🤘

I'm happy to hear you are progressing along well enough to do more things, take care and stay on the plan from the experts.

propane fridge exploded? Geesh that cant be good those things are super reliable and tough! Scary

Have fun at concert no "overdoing" it

If I was closer I would mow for you it is one of my favorite past times!!

Glad to hear you are on the mend. Funny how folks sometimes spend more time and money on vehicle building and maintenance, then cash to go use em, than personal maintenance. I'm very guilty of that also.
Just take the time, watch some movies, maybe even cooking videos. Corny as that sounds, you may get find good recipes for heart healthy food. Mindset change, just for a minute. You got this.

The other day I saw a pretty attractive gal mowing in a bikini, I wonder if she hires out.

^ What he said. I think we're all guilty of spending more keeping our toys running than ourselves. It's easy to see what is wrong with and fix the toys than ourselves. If only we could diagnose ourselves as easily as we diagnose our cars!

If you find that the attractive lawn mower hires out.... let me know! Heck I'll change our yard from rock to grass! hehe

When you live alone, good hobbies keep you sane, and out of trouble.

A little here and there, is easily managed on a hobby. Nothing cheap about personal care and sometimes it's painful. That's no fun. Lol hobbies keep me active and not some couch potato. I get what is meant by that at the same time.

Now that I know why activities made me so tired, and everything was hard work, it all makes sense why. My goal is to be able to work as I once did, and not have it kick my butt, as it has these last few years.

You can do it!!
I am only 49 but most of my buddies are 65-75, the dudes who work hard and go to the gym, move around all day, (like keep working until we are old) are the ones still moving around. My good friend Rich has beat cancer 3 times, he is as active as I am until about 530 pm then he starts to slow down...,the dude is 72!! Time to start taking care of ourselves like we do our trucks.
I spent this summer dropping 25 pounds I have 15 more to go
a body at rest tends to stay at rest
A body in motion tends to stay in motion

Yes... As soon as I get the all clear, I am wanting to start with cardio workouts, and small projects. I am not there just yet, but hopefully soon!
For now, I am simply increasing my time with walking around, and doing small chores around the house. Simple stuff, like cleaning! lol
Keeping myself active, will be a mental challenge, and not a physical one, I hope! I have already lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks, and hoping to lose another 20 lbs, but not as fast.

Grass is getting tall with all this rain we have had. 15" of precip in a week! It's crazy! Rains all next week too. Sigh.... Might just let it go, and call the Amish to cut hay in a month.

Thanks for the support guys!

I hope you feel better
just please don't push yourself to hard and break something loose

Been a while...... Howdy EF!
Hitting the exercise bike daily for a couple of weeks now, and slowly building back my stamina, and breathing without wanting to pass out. Lost about 15 lbs so far. Was able to mow the lawn a couple weeks ago! Baby steps! LOL

Anyways, felt like doing something with this rig, but something simple physically. I ordered a 15W Midland MicroMobile 275 GMRS combo kit with the ghost antennae, and finally got it installed.

This unit is like the Cobra 75 CB, with all the controls in the Mic. You can hide the base unit, and what I chose to do, just like the Cobra 75 base is tucked away in the dash.
I really didn't have any more room inside the dash, so chose to use the glove box. I really don't use it for much of anything, so no love loss.

Three 7mm screws is all that holds the glove box to the dash. I removed it, to make it easier to fish the wires to it. The base unit is removable from the mounting bracket, and the bracket is installed with one center 8mm stainless bolt/nut, so I can swivel the unit 1/4 turn. A hole was made for the cables to pass thru the backside. Power/ground- UHF cable-Aux speaker-Cat6 all feed into the base unit.

275 Mid 1.jpg

The UHF cable is almost 20 ft long, and I only needed about 6 foot. I tried to tuck the extra cable behind the box, but already had that open space to the right filled with the CB cable. so it got rolled up and sits in the glove box for now. I will think of something eventually for it, and move it.

275 Mid 6.jpg

The UHF cable was ran behind the dash, then thru the firewall behind the brake pedal area. I used a cable gland grommet for it and the the power wire. It's water tight once tightened. Cable runs up to cowl where the Ghost mini Ant resides on Brian1 built bracket made for it. A simple 5/16" stainless carriage bolt was used.

275 Mid 3.jpg

The Mic cable is a CAT6 that can be extended with the supplied 18 ft extension if wanted. That was just too big and it would mean another bundle of wire to hide/store somewhere. I decided to go another route. I found a stainless CAT6 bulkhead with dust cover, on the old amazonian site that works perfectly. It's a dble female, and used with a 3 ft dble male CAT6 extension (also Amazon) to eliminate extra cable.

The bulkhead plugin was installed on the Pass side of the console down low, near the 12v port. Same with a Mic holder.

The base unit has a speaker, and so does the MIC. You can control which speaker you want to use with the Mic. I plugged in a remote speaker mounted behind me by the C Pillar, because of the base being inside the glovebox. It's plenty loud, and there is a volume control.

When not in use, the Mic simply unplugs, and is stored in the glovebox.

Using repeaters this can reach 100 miles per repeater. I most likely will never ever use those, even with the $35 license and call sign your "supposed" to get with these. 50 miles clear line of sight, 35 miles in hilly terrain, and 5 miles in the hills. More then I need! It will work great while on the HWY talking to others in the caravan too.

I only wanted this because everyone is using the UHF bands these days. I have a set of Midland handhelds that I have been using, and this is much simpler being hardwired to the battery, and no more battery fuss. The handhelds work the same as this, and they are a nice addition to this system. I can lend a handheld to someone in our group if they are without.

Those extending CV's are the next project once I am up to it. Also a new headliner is waiting with the Corbeau bracket lowering mod. Fall temps are here, and I plan on taking advantage of it. next month I want to spend a weekend camping and wheeling at a park, so I got to get it in gear!

I have a major engine project I am wanting to do on this rig over the winter, and am going to need help with figuring it out. I know there are a few of you engine building members following this, and I am going to lean on your advice big time, if your able. Thinking crate motor build pushing 300-350HP!!

Until next time, I hope your all doing well, and living life to the fullest! 🤘

I'm glad you are starting to feel better Gregg.

Best option for the cable is to cut it and solder in a new connector.

Since you have a body lift, I'd try for a max stroked 351 for max torque , less radical cam. I think you can get 426 CI in , and a much longer living block.

Man, it'd be nice to see that thing with a decked out 351, that would be sick!

Wouldn't I lose the HVAC box? What about exhaust for that engine? Those heads are much larger then the 302's is why I ask.

My current thoughts are a nice 302 crate engine, built with the cam, pistons, and heads of choice, and reuse all my accessories to reduce the total costs, and TMH's made for the Body lift.

A local shop here said he can rebuild mine and use an RV cam for lower end power, and get over 300 hp out of it. I'm on the fence with that guy.
He says the E303 cam is a waste, and I will hate it. That left me scratching my head, as plenty here have used that cam and seemed to like it.
